Orienteering race 18:19 [5] 3.0 km (6:06 / km)

Qld sprint champs at UQ. good course, with some nice long legs with good route choice. a couple of tricky controls, 4 in particular got a lot of people... which I probably should take some responsibility for - I re-mapped part of the area after a new building went in, but the back part of it doesn't join up very well (...I had focused on the front part, which was where the control for my event was). looks like I've got some more work to do there.
Anyhow. my run was ok. struggled on the first hill, and never felt too great running. caught james on 3 - he'd managed to lose 4mins by running out of the wrong exit of the great court. passed james going into 4 - he looked pretty confused by the passageways. ran with james from there. lost a few secs 8-9 when I started running out of the control at 90 degrees wrong. had a laugh at james when he punched 5 again on the run back through - and then took off around the lake instead of going straight to 11.
rachel got me by 1sec... seems to be becoming a regular time gap between us.

Running warm up/down 40:00 [3]

home to event, to start, back from finish, back to uni and picking up controls.

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

mtb ride at bunya with Kathy. bunya was still just as slippery as last week, but this time Kathy did all the crashing. nice cruisy ride.

Running 45:00 [3]

totally crap run. haven't really slept this week, and ended up taking a sleeping pill at 2am... but then woke up this morning feeling totally hungover. decided I needed to go for a run to wake up, but could barely shuffle along. woke up a bit after a while and tried to do some surges on the way home. still feeling tired, but I think its more from not sleeping this week, than last night in particular. blah.

Running intervals 24:00 [5] 6.0 km (4:00 / km)

Ran with Kirra this week. 3x2km with 3min jog rec. first one was really easy, second one was really hard. thought about bailing, but did the third one with kirra.
7.57, 8.09, 8.27.

Running warm up/down 50:00 [2]

warm up, warm down and recoveries

Gym 40:00 [5]

Training at race elements. just me today - Kathy is busy drinking margaritas at lindeman island this week.
load week, so got pretty smashed up. going to hurt in a couple of days (and shoulders already pretty sore from yesterdays mtb outing).

btw - intervals are back on tomorrow. anyone going to join me?

Cycling 1:30:00 [3]

mtb ride in bunya, starting from xmas's. been a while since the mtb got an outing - took the number off it last night - for a race back in feb(?). skills were bit rusty, and got quite a test in the wet& muddy conditions.

had a massive OTB when my front wheel disappeared into a hole in the creek... all about 3m in front of where Dan, Matt and Steve had stopped. apparently it was quite amusing.
lazy b'fast back at the xmas's - bacon & eggs & lots of coffee.

Running long 1:10:00 [3]

longish run from my place into southbank to put out controls for the orienteering stand at the outdoor sports expo. running on concrete really sucks- legs are trashed now.

Orienteering 15:00 [2]

putting controls out at southbank.

Segway 10:00 [0]

played on the segways at the outdoor sports expo. so much fun!! I want to do a sprint race on one!!

Note

legs feeling a bit smashed after 2 road runs in 2 days. skipped the mt run and spent the afternoon trecking round dfo looking for stuff to wear to job interview on tuesday.

Friday May 22, 2009 #

Running 56:00 [3]

just an easy run before dinner

Wednesday May 20, 2009 #

Running 40:00 [3]

easy run in the pissing rain. surprised I stayed motivated to keep running that long - it was pretty miserable out.

Tuesday May 19, 2009 #

pilates 1:00:00 [2]

lunchtime pilates class. back feels heaps better now.

Note

not doing intervals tonight, but anyone interested in a cruisy run instead?

Running 40:00 [2]

cruisy run with Dan during a short pause in the rain. got stitches in both sides from running too slow.

Monday May 18, 2009 #

Gym 35:00 [3]

woke up feeling very sore - especially in the feet and calves. went to Race anyway, mainly just to chat to Bec and Kathy. Did a shorter session - all core strength (cos my legs were clearly useless), and actually felt heaps better afterwards.

Kathy only reminded us about 1000 times that she's going to lindeman island next week.

Orienteering race 1:24:04 [5] 11.3 km (7:26 / km) +330m 6:29 / km

NOL long distance Awoonga. Another very annoying race. made one mistake - but it was a big one. lost the plot on the way across to 5 and didn't climb enough, so got all the creeks confused. ended up relocating on the guys control on the termite mound. lost at least 5 mins on that one, and a fair bit of motivation. tried to keep the pace going for the rest, but its a bit hard when you know its all over. managed to get around the rest without any mistakes, although perhaps could have saved a bit of climb out of 13. hit the wall right at the end, and the run across to 17 was a bit of a random stagger. splits for all but 5 were pretty similar to shannons and kathryns, which just makes it more annoying.

feeling better than yesterday which was a bit surprising (and good!) after it seemed like my cold was on its way back.

pretty frustrated with the whole weekend, and not just cos I screwed up the selection trials. the orienteering was generally pretty good, and there was plenty of stuff to be happy about - I think I'm running better than I have been, and starting to get a good race-mode back; even if only for parts of the course - but nice after 18 months of battling injuries. but instead of being happy with that I'm pissed off cos of 3 bad controls. poo

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Saturday May 16, 2009 #

Orienteering race 14:25 [5] 2.4 km (6:00 / km)

NOL sprint at CIT. Pretty clean run, but took the wrong way round the buildings on a couple of controls - 2, 7 and to the finish. still not sure about the finish one - right is shorter on the map, but 50% longer in the splits - weird.
lungs struggled with the hard running, and from about 1/3 of the way through I was feeling really short of breath. coughed up heaps of junk after though.

Orienteering race 35:32 [5] 5.3 km (6:42 / km) +115m 6:03 / km

NOL middle at wild deer sands. stuffed the first one, didn't see the termite mound under the pile of logs, so ran on, the figured I was too far and too low and ran back and saw it on the way back (1min). got the next few ok - bit of a hesitation on 3, but relocated quickly. lost another minute on 9 - ran down the gully, but lost contact a bit and turned in early. had trouble relocating, and started looking up in the white instead of down in the yellow. did a full lap of the thicket on 11, and was a bit hesitant running up into the nothing on 12. wish I could stop making dumb mistakes.
lungs felt much clearer this afternoon, but legs were a bit empty on the hills.

Running 35:00 [3]
(sick)

easy run round uni, with 3x500m to test out the legs a bit. 1.44, 1.46 and 1.45. fast enough, but still don't feel that great running.

Wednesday May 13, 2009 #

Running 25:00 [2]
(sick)

very easy run to see if I could. legs didn't feel too bad (but I really was going slow), but lungs still felt pretty tight and clogged up.

Note

serious downside to sister being a nurse - she caught a nasty case of gastro from a patient. she's in quarantine now.

Tuesday May 12, 2009 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

snot-headness threatening to turn into snot-lungness, so might hold of running for another day.

Monday May 11, 2009 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

getting better (ie, going to uni), but still a bit of a snot-head. hopefully I'll be well enough to go for a little jog tomorrow.

Running hills (Anzac Park TT) 26:21 [5] 5.2 km (5:04 / km) +260m 4:03 / km

new fastest time! yay! 15 secs faster than previous pb.
felt pretty sore to start with - legs were pretty smashed from the gym yesterday. started a bit slow, and was quite surprised to have run so quick. not complaining though - its about time all this training worked!

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Gym 40:00 [5]

Training at race elements. no Kathy this week, so session went a bit quicker (less chatting maybe?). last big session in this block, and it was a smashfest. nice and tired now, and hurting all over. legs will be sore tomorrow - 3x10 @ 200kg on leg press.

Tuesday May 5, 2009 #

Running intervals 20:00 [5] 5.0 km (4:00 / km)

same session as last week - 10x500m, with 500m jog recoveries. Olly turned up this week, but no-one else. started a bit slower this week, but they finished up being quite a bit quicker, seems it take a while for my legs to get going. *and I don't think my hrm is reading quite right.

Cycling 1:10:00 [3] 31.0 km (2:15 / km)

Ride from Boonah with Dad. bit of a head wind to start, but that meant a quick trip back home, so that was ok. quads a bit sore to start with - lots of running hills and through long grass on the weekend.

Sunday May 3, 2009 #

Orienteering race 31:54 [5] 4.5 km (7:05 / km) +70m 6:35 / km

middle distance challenge at bright view. crazy convoluted course, and head high spear grass, but it wasn't as bad as I expected. I guess cos it was a short course I managed to keep the motivation going long enough to get around without slowing down too much, or having a major sense of humor failure. a couple of controls weren't quite in the right place (or the map wasn't quite right) but didn't take too much to figure out (...low expectations).
had a win in M21, which meant I beat Mat (by 6mins) and Olly (by 11mins).

Note

got a flat tyre on the way home from the event. big bang, and totally shredded. two nice people stopped to help - one as I was putting the dead wheel away, and the other as I finished pumping up the spare I'd put on the car (lucky I have a track pump that just hangs out in the car).

Running warm up/down 15:00 [3]

warm up
no warm down, sat and picked spear grass out of clothes instead

Saturday May 2, 2009 #

Running long 1:50:00 [3]

long run from Rachels place, with Rachel, Biddy, Kaketin, Kirra, Mat and Richie. Ran up moggil rd to highwood rd, up 3 sisters to ring rd, down to simpsons falls and back up to ring rd via telstra. raced mat down ch9 to gap creek. back to the gap via boscome rd and sth boundary.
generally felt a bit tired and worn out today, and my foot was hurting a bit at the end.
yummy bread and pancakes for breakfast after, and a coffee from the effeney's snazy espresso machine.
