trolls river ride. only a dedicated group of six braved the wind this morning, and it was hard work even though we didn't go as fast as usual.

river ride with Dan and Lisa. Knee was really good this morning - didn't feel it at all (although that may be due to the cold - it was freezing this morning!)

River ride. Same route as trolls, but just joined them for coffee at the end. Knee was really good - got a bit puffy at the end, but didn't hurt. Didn't try and ride too hard - just cruised around. Downside was that I didn't really warm up for the whole ride.

this really annoying now - I could ride, but its been raining for the last 2 days... and I don't ride in the rain. half because riding in the rain is no fun at all, and half because brissy drivers go totally nuts when it rains - I think they all close their eyes and drive twice as fast. scary stuff. maybe it'll clear up later, or maybe I'll go to the gym at uni.

jog around the uni. got so sick of sitting on my butt I had to do something, and I wasn't going riding in the rain. Knee felt ok, not painful, but I made sure I iced it straight after. had to be pretty careful with the way I was running though, and could only take short steps, so it wasn't really that much fun. I think I'll try and stick to cycling till it heals more and I can run properly.

Orienteering at Cascades. Did the red 8 - the W65 course. It was great to be out in the forest again, and I even managed to jog little bits on the bare rock! yay!! hopefully not long till I can run properly! made it round without making any mistakes... I was a bit worried about getting bored and losing contact going so slowly, but fortunately I managed to stay focused and didn't get beaten by the W65s!!

collected controls after a schools orienteering session I organised this morning. I've got the knee-bend thing back in my walk, so getting round without limping now. I can even walk quite fast without any discomfort. yay!
lots of ice afterwards to make sure my knee keeps getting better.

I think I over did the walking yesterday - my left hammy is feeling a bit sore - I have to do a funny walk because my knee won't bend enough so I end up limping even though I'm trying not to.
I should probably be resting more so that it gets better faster. I can't wait till I can run or ride again - I'm going nuts not being able to train!

visited the surgeon today. says my knee is progressing well. saw some pics of the surgery - lots of other parts of my knee? and some of the space where the cysts were. surgeon was really funny - it was like he was going through his holiday photos - tour de knee!

he said the cysts were on the front of the meniscus and not related to any tears (which is good - but doesn't know why they turned up), and that the lumpy bits were a bit over 3cm! yuck!!

I've ditched the walking stick today, and I can walk up stairs almost normally (still a bit unco getting down them though).
I think I'm also going to ditch the bandage today and get one of those elastic tube thingos so I can move my knee a bit more.

knee is heaps better today - the swelling is going down (icing every couple of hours) and I can now bend it to 90 degrees quite comfortably.

Knee is feeling pretty good - much better than I expected (and better than it did before the operation). I last took some painkillers about 6pm last night (its now 11) and I'm getting around fine. I can even balance on the dodgy leg! Yay!

Knee surgery! I had my arthroscopy this morning and they removed a cyst about the size of a marble from the meniscus.
Feeling ok now - just a bit woozy. The knee feels ok, and I can walk around (slowly) fine (although this may have a fair bit to do with the painkillers).

I think I might go and have a nap now.

Went to visit the knee surgeon yesterday afternoon. I have some funky lumps in the meniscus - either cysts or lumps of cartilage. (They look the same on the mri and the doc won't be able to tell until he gets a closer look). Either way they have to come out, so I'm getting surgery tomorrow morning. It should be an arthroscopy, but they might have to open my knee up a bit if they're solid lumps and not cysts.

Doc says the recovery should be fairly quick - on the stationary trainer in a couple of days, back cycling within 2 weeks, some running in 3 weeks and full running in 4.

trolls ride. pretty cold this morning! about 6 degrees... I'm glad I don't live anywhere colder. Knee was quite ok today (numb?), not trying to run on it is definitely helping!

Note

spent the weekend climbing at glenreagh (just inland from coffs). saturdays climbs were boring, but found some great stuff on sunday and and monday and took my first fall on lead on an 18 - had heaps of rope out cos I was just about to clip the second bolt. fell a bit over 3m and ended up in a tree. heart rate got to about 400, but I managed to not get hurt.

mtb ride on forestry roads near coffs harbour. lots of big hills, and about an hour of the ride was along awesome eroded rocky fire road (which would have been totally undriveable), so scored a much better day out than expected.

Rode trolls and took Lisa out for her first real trolls ride. Ian ran over a little asian girl who crashed her bike right in front of him. He scored some frequent flyer points, but nobody got injured.

knee was ok for riding - started to ache after a while, but didn't get any nasty pain. Looks like cycling is going to be a good option for cross training for a while. I'm very happy I can do something!!

physio recons I've got a cyst on the meniscus - I've got a big lump (about the size of a grape) sticking out on the inside of my knee. its really hard (like bone). The pain is from the lump pushing the rest of my knee out of alignment - so running with it there is a really bad idea.
I'm off to get an MRI on Friday, and seeing the knee doctor on Wednesday. I'll know more then.

Physio did say I can cycle if it doesn't hurt... so I might try that when it stops raining.

started running down to training, but only made it about 2mins before I decided my knee was not going to improve enough for running to be possible. iced it when I got home, and made a physio appointment for 9.30 tomorrow morning.

would have liked to add a longer run on, but knee puffed up and was sore to walk on by the end.

f-ing fast friday. was hurting from the start, but somehow I was always just able to keep with the group, and ended up staying at the front over the hills and was 2nd in the sprint.
