Run 1:01:00 [3] 10.5 km (5:49 / km)

Out towards Clifton Hill. A reasonable run on a nice morning with a first-day-of-spring vibe - body not always at its best but probably a bit better than yesterday (and so far don't seem to have pulled up with anything). Cleared another block of Clifton Hill - only the small pocket from Wellington westwards to go. Plenty of people out, not surprising given the conditions (but the sort of thing which will excite people who still don't know the difference between high-risk and low-risk situations).

Run 42:00 [3] 7.4 km (5:41 / km)

Back running today. Decided to do a straight run rather than terrain for my first one back, and went to explore one of the more distant ends of my circle, Heidelberg Heights from Malahang Reserve (roughly speaking, filling in the gaps in the east-west streets from a park/street event last spring) - up and down most of the time but always at a gentle gradient. Hip was OK before and during the run (will have to see how it comes up overnight, which has always been the issue with this injury); a bit of soreness more around the front but in a different area, which I'll put down to recently underused muscles.

Part of this area is the 1956 Olympic Village, and just to show that there's nothing new about Olympic host cities seeking to ingratiate themselves with the IOC, there's a street named after then IOC president Avery Brundage (not the most appealing character ever to have held that position).

Cycling 46:00 [3] 15.1 km (3:03 / km)

Out to Eaglemont and then up the hills, which was reasonably hard work - don't feel as if I'm at my best on the bike at the moment (don't think it's the bike's fault, although I put some oil on the chain this morning which will hopefully be helpful). Hip is continuing to improve and I definitely felt as if I could have gone out on it today, but decided to give it one more day before testing it out tomorrow.

Back into the late-night meetings tonight. At least (a) it's the only one of the week and (b) it finishes at 11, both of which are an advance on some recent weeks. (I'm starting to get to the stage at work of beginning to take on the task of catching up on all the things which have been badly neglected of late).

Cycling 1:01:00 [3] 21.0 km (2:54 / km)

Hip had only mild discomfort today but I'm giving it a few days to see if I can get it properly right, so headed out on the bike this morning, initially north towards Northland and then west and south. Pretty slow early on on the Darebin Creek path and surrounds, gradually built into it in the second half. Plenty of water in the creek despite limited recent rain - the stepping stones north of the Darebin Road bridge are still mostly under (note to self if contemplating running the east bank track from the north). Nice morning to be out.

Cycling 44:00 [3] 15.4 km (2:51 / km)

Saw the physio last night. While I can run on the hip injury (most of the time) she thinks it is an indication of overloading so I'm backing off for a bit to give it a chance to settle down.

Went out on the bike at lunchtime, in conditions which were "dangerously windy" according to Brodie and Jayne's Attackpoint but only "windy" according to mine. "Windy" was about right - certainly hard work going into it (adding some virtual hills to a route without many real ones), but not impossible. As with most of my recent rides, it seemed a bit slow but didn't feel too bad.

Don't know about you, but I can think of better things to do with $2600.

Run intervals 12:00 [4] 2.0 km (6:00 / km)

First attempt at doing something faster since the injury. Got through a minimal session (further squeezed by meetings at both ends) but definitely a step down from a month or so back. Pulled up OK afterwards.

Run warm up/down 26:00 [3] 4.0 km (6:30 / km)

Warm-up and down. Noticed that a fairly useless new bike line has popped up on a couple of hundred metres of Station Street north of the shops - I would speculate that, like the equally short bus lane outside the Clifton Hill athletics track, this is actually serving the function of being a way of keeping cars out of a lane the authorities don't want them in. (In this case, it might be to manage the queues sometimes waiting to get into the Covid test site). There are signs for planned improved bike lanes on Victoria Road and Westgarth Street, which make much more sense.

Pilates 45:00 [3]

Maybe the progress wasn't what I thought it was - hip this morning was as bad as it's been in the last week. Still worked out OK for this set of exercises, though, with only a couple of them causing any real trouble.

Cycling 46:00 [3] 16.1 km (2:51 / km)

Lunchtime ride while waiting for something to happen (the report hit the streets at 6pm). Not the strongest ride I've ever had - certainly felt like hard work going up the Heidelberg hill (and even the couple of subsequent bumps) - but good to get out there. First time I've tried to ride with the hip in its current state and it worked out reasonably - only minor discomfort and that was soon gone.
