Run 1:04:00 [3] 11.1 km (5:46 / km)

The hip is gradually improving and causes no real issues on the run, but it was a return to more familiar challenges today - four successive days of running was stretching the limits of what my back was up to and it was a struggle from about 25 minutes onwards (interestingly, after finishing most of the climbing rather than during it). Was almost going to pull the pin at 50 minutes but a stretching/mobilisation stop settled it down enough to get home. Still good to get a bit more distance on the board (and draw a few more lines on the map at the top end of Ivanhoe and the south end of West Heidelberg), although it puts things in perspective that in a decent week I've done about as much distance in a week as those I was watching in Sapporo this morning managed in a bit over two hours.

(Said participants would probably have wanted Sapporo's record run of consecutive 30-degree days - 18 as of yesterday, highest I've seen today is 29.something so touch and go - to finish sooner, although I think the three Australian women and Liam Adams probably all placed better than they would have done in more benign conditions. They probably don't want to hear that the current forecast for Wednesday - somewhat uncertain, depending on the exact track of a typhoon - is 15 and rain).

Run ((orienteering)) 50:00 [3] *** 6.9 km (7:15 / km)
spiked:19/20c

Eaglemont Flats, same set of controls as last time but putting them together in a different order (the water in the billabong has receded a bit - at least the start of #3's spur is now visible). Better than I expected with hip only a minor nuisance, and as always good to be out in the more forested sections (although some of the tracks are getting muddy, as expected at this time of year). The BMX track was being well used although it is even without Olympic inspiration.

Used the last of my supply of split printouts for shopping lists today, on a day when one was left wondering whether there will be any further opportunities to replenish it this year.

Run 41:00 [3] 7.1 km (5:46 / km)

Hip sore this morning, but having experienced how it loosened up in the water on Wednesday, I thought I'd try running on it and see how it went. The answer was that it was OK to run on once warmed up, with only mild discomfort, but it wasn't as comfortable later in the day as it was on Wednesday so a mixed verdict. Still, it was a decent run to get on the board; felt smoother than most recent sessions (although in part that was because it was flatter).

I continued my recent lockdown practice of going somewhere that was within the 5km circle but too far from home to be within range of anything other than an out-and-back run. This time it was the corner of Preston south of Bell and west of St.Georges (in the name of eventually covering everything south of the 'here be dragons' line).

The IPCC report was approved late this afternoon. It's been a long road. (It sees the light of day publicly on Monday).

Run 52:00 [3] 9.1 km (5:43 / km)

Hip considerably better today so set out with the intent of a longer run, initially along the Darebin path and then into Kew - some sharper hills than I've been used to of late, but managed them more or less OK, and flowing quite well at times. Hip started to give a bit of trouble from about 35 minutes onwards and decided to head for home rather than try to stay out past an hour, but it hasn't pulled up too badly so hopefully won't be too bad tomorrow.

Pool running 45:00 [3] 0.7 km (1:04:17 / km)

Hip a bit worse overnight and decided it was a bit too painful to run on; perhaps I should have persisted because after a session in the pool it was considerably better than it was previously. Pool session itself went OK, and stayed out of the way of someone doing some very vigorous exercises (not sure exactly what) in the same lane.

Run 45:00 [3] 8.0 km (5:38 / km)

Down into the last remaining corner of Clifton Hill east of Hoddle. Often didn't feel smooth but the pace was reasonable (although I think the GPS was doing some odd things early), on a nice morning. Probably at its best in the last 10 minutes (not the first time I've said that lately).

Hip had settled significantly overnight and was fine on the run; a bit sore afterwards but definitely better than Sunday. Certainly less painful than this afternoon's meeting session, too (suffice it to say that probably the most significant thing achieved in the three hours was that I cut up the items which were going into dinner during the five-minute break in the middle).

Note

Not sure anyone whose only experience of Frazzle Rock was at Easter 2011 will recognise the area from this report from the latest WA e-news:

"This was a BO Club event, set by Lois and Rob West with Helen Bailey as controller. Held on farmland near Brookton, it was a Long SOL (State O League) event. The area is mostly open farmland interspersed with complex granite sections. There were plenty of sheep with the lambs just a few months old. The heavy rains produced some very high, wet cape weed in large parts of some paddocks and made running extremely difficult. The creeks and flat areas were waterlogged after the well-above-average rainfall for the month of July. The strong winds had also caused many trees to fall on the access roads."

Pilates 45:00 [3]

Monday morning Pilates. Hip still quite sore when I got up and I'm not sure I would have fancied running today, but handled this session OK (and the advantage of having a Pilates session which is taken by one's physio is that you can get some impromptu advice on it; she doesn't seem too concerned). Managed to get through all the exercises more or less OK.

8 AM

Swimming 38:00 [2] 1.0 km (38:00 / km)

Felt pretty smooth and relaxed. The reason it felt relaxed became apparent when I started looking at the clock - this was decidedly slower than Friday. Picked up a little bit later on.

Hip settled during the day somewhat so hopefully it will be OK for tomorrow. Might not have quite as strange a schedule tomorrow as I'd thought - the session which I thought was going to be midnight-3am tonight has been shifted to 7-10pm tomorrow.
