Cycling 45:00 [3] 16.1 km (2:48 / km)

Back a bit tight to run so instead headed out for a late afternoon ride before a meeting, on a not-particularly-challenging route around the suburbs. Smooth enough without hitting any great heights, and the back was somewhat better for the workout. Even without getting a run in today, this was my biggest month for a couple of years - hopefully a bit more to build on from here.

Run intervals 12:00 [4] 2.0 km (6:00 / km)

Lunchtime All Nations intervals. A little faster than previously but again began to tighten up towards the end and ditched plans to take the session further. Felt a bit borderline generally, which may or may not suggest an issue with trying to do things tomorrow, but we'll wait and see on that one.

At one point an RAAF plane flew overhead. It was reported that in the US, the Republican's proposed bill to deal with coronavirus includes several hundred million for new fighter jets. Perhaps someone should tell them that you can't bomb a virus.

And the Europe section of the Economist was in fine form this week: in a story about an illegally constructed hotel in Athens obstructing significant views (as they drily noted, "from some angles the hotel shuts out the view of the Parthenon, and is distinctly less attractive") and the political fallout from this, they noted that the first decree regulating building heights in the Acropolis precinct was made less than a century after the Parthenon was built, before musing "Perhaps today's rules would be better respected if developers had to worry about being presented with a cup of hemlock".

Run warm up/down 26:00 [3] 4.0 km (6:30 / km)

Warm-up and down, taking different cross-streets to normal in the name of collecting a few extra Northcote streets without having to go out of my way for them when the time comes.

Cycling 1:00:00 [3] 23.0 km (2:37 / km)

Back a bit stiff today so went out for a late afternoon ride instead on the La Trobe loop. Didn't feel that sharp but actually turned out to be faster than my previous outings here - go figure. Nice afternoon to be out in the midst of a very long work day (with another 1am finish coming up, thankfully the last in this sequence).

Dodgy political leaders (an occasional series, this time from Bulgaria) - from the "Economist":

'The government's troubles started in June, when an anonymous source began leaking recordings of someone who sounded like Mr Borisov ridiculing EU officials and boasting of harassing a local business. The next week, photos surfaced of a man resembling the prime minister asleep on a bed, with a handgun on the nightstand and an open drawer full of EUR500 bills and gold ingots. Mr Borisov said the recordings and photos were manipulated, but acknowledged it was his bedroom'.

Note

Time for the big sporting showdown of the season: this is the week I'm up against Dad in AFL Supercoach. Thought I'd got a flying start from tonight's game but Dustin Martin's in his team too.

Run 40:00 [3] 6.7 km (5:58 / km)

Not in the mood for doing something early morning after a 1am finish, so instead headed out at lunchtime on the sort of day that feels pleasantly warm at this time of year. Felt somewhat iffy in the first 10 minutes but progressively improved thereafter - getting down into the Alphington Wetlands was definitely a plus as a venue even if it was a bit slower (and I've now got the confidence to handle climbing out of it). Also had a look at exactly what the 'Alphington Swimming Pool' that Google Maps shows is (it's a set of stone terraces next to the river which was a public swimming spot from the 1920s to the 1960s), and did a few more of the streets of southeast Alphington - just a small inner loop around the school to do now.

Three days to go, but this is already the biggest month I've done for a couple of years.

Pilates 40:00 [3]

Monday morning Pilates (doing it with a mask for the first time, which was a bit strange, although now that the reusable ones I'd ordered have arrived it should be easier next time). Reasonably routine although added a step of difficulty on one of the exercises. Still not light at the start but that won't be too far away.
8 AM

Cycling 45:00 [3] 16.0 km (2:49 / km)

The shortened Heidelberg loop (or a minor variation of it). Definitely felt like a recovery ride but handled the main climb OK, with assistance from a bit of tail wind (an unusual direction for one). Got a good run with the lights on the uphill sections, which always helps. Seemed to drift off a bit in the later stages (though because it's mostly downhill that isn't terribly noticeable).

Happened to be looking today at an old log entry from a week when I topped 100km, which contained the comment "Now to put together a few more like it". Haven't done one since...

Run 1:12:00 [3] 12.2 km (5:54 / km)

A decent session as things go. Started out feeling a little uncertain as I was doing a zigzag down the streets between the railway line and Heidelberg Road to clear that part of Alphington, then settled reasonably well once on the Darebin Creek path and south of the river. Brief encounters with Bruce at about 20 minutes and Tash and Nicola at about 35; the latter seemed to settle a left knee that was starting to get a bit sore. Quite crowded on the singletrack south of the river (first time I've been there for a while), but manageable, then finished off with a loop out to Westgarth station. Tiring a bit later on but reasonably satisfied with this, adding another small increment to the longest-week-this-year mark (first time for a while that I've run four days in a row, too).

Speaking of covering a suburb, in the cycling world it's become known as "burbing". Someone did it in one go in Reservoir (the largest suburb in the established parts of Melbourne) a few days back; 314 kilometres worth....

Run ((orienteering)) 47:00 [3] *** 6.5 km (7:14 / km) +120m 6:37 / km
spiked:15/16c

Once again an old course at Darebin Parklands, getting used now to the quirks of the old map which it was on (I encountered someone else doing the permanent course, which I picked the eyes out of a while back). Was working fairly hard but definite signs of progress, in the form of running up hills that I wasn't running up a week or two back. (I think I may have lost a bit of weight, too - either that or my trousers have stretched). Think I may run out of ideas on this area eventually, but it is nice to be out in terrain of sorts.

8 AM

Run 41:00 [3] 7.0 km (5:51 / km)

Had had a 5am start for a meeting (not an unknown occurrence for me in recent times) and headed out afterwards, with a mission of clearing a few more parts of the south end of Alphington, at least to the extent that current building works allow (there are already a couple of new streets which weren't on the map). This also took me down to the river for a bit, not as muddy as it was last time I was there (and running the climb out of the river worked out better than it did last time, too). Back mostly reasonable but definitely running out of steam in the last few minutes, probably a case of not being super-awake.

The remaining bits of Alphington are the strip between the railway line and Heidelberg Road, and parts of the area to the east of Alphington Park. Could probably clear this in one go, but whether or not I'll try to do so probably depends on what I feel like doing on Sunday. Haven't yet decided which adjoining suburb is the next challenge after that.

Run intervals 12:00 [4] 2.0 km (6:00 / km)

All Nations intervals. One of the better recent sessions of its type and thought of doing another couple of reps, but back was starting to twinge a bit on the last one so kept it at six.

The park was noticeably emptier than usual for a lunchtime; I suspect the requirement to wear a mask when walking (but not when running or cycling, something that's generated a certain amount of online "what about them" angst) is a significant disincentive to people going out.

Run warm up/down 25:00 [3] 4.0 km (6:15 / km)

Warm-up and down. In recent months I've often been walking for 5-10 minutes before I start running, but this time I did that bit up and down the corridor at home (I do carry something which I could use as a face covering if I had to, and do have some proper masks on order but they haven't arrived yet).

Wednesday Jul 22, 2020 #

5 PM

Cycling 47:00 [3] 17.3 km (2:43 / km)

Back was the worst it's been for a while today and a lunchtime attempt didn't work out (I was too sleepy in the morning, which had nothing at all to do with the first of a string of 10-11pm finishes, to be mixed up with a couple of 1ams next week). Eventually headed out in the late afternoon with little expectation other than just getting some air, heading north on the Darebin Trail initially (without any crashes this time) and then picking my way through the suburbs to the west. A fairly easy route - no major hills - but was starting to enjoy myself by the end.

Tuesday Jul 21, 2020 #

8 AM

Cycling 45:00 [3] 16.1 km (2:48 / km)

I'd originally been thinking of the Boulevard, but was discouraged (a) because of reports that police had been targeting popular cycling routes (I should be local enough to pass muster, but would rather not have to explain that) and (b) because the tacker is reportedly back in action. Instead I went for a shortened version of the La Trobe loop, going as far as the top end of Heidelberg Heights before turning west and south. Not as energetic at last Friday, but that might have been because I was out earlier than Friday.

Pilates 40:00 [3]

Monday morning Pilates. Felt easier than it usually does, which is hopefully another indicator that things are going reasonably well at the moment.
1 PM

Run 40:00 [3] 6.7 km (5:58 / km)

Got through a Monday run this time. Back a little more troublesome than it had been over the weekend but still quite manageable - didn't have to stop to stretch/mobilise it at any stage this time. Definitely felt like a recovery run and was pretty slow, but after quads fatigued a lot yesterday they came up fine today.

I've now cleared the remaining streets of Alphington north of the railway line; still various bits to do on the south side. Someone else, inspired by someone who was complaining on the news a couple of days back that walking through Brighton was boring, rode every street of Brighton yesterday (a 97km session - Brighton's a big suburb).

Sunday Jul 19, 2020 #

11 AM

Run 1:02:00 [3] 10.3 km (6:01 / km)

Good news and bad with this one. The good news was that my back was probably as good as it's been for a long time and didn't quibble even when presented with a few more ups and downs than it's had for a while, the bad news was that those ups and downs were a bit more than my quads were ready for. Settled for getting an hour on the board and did, perhaps improving a bit in the last 10 minutes, and added a further small increment onto the most-running-in-a-week-this-year benchmark so can't be too upset about that. Also can't be too upset about finding an interesting (if small) park whose existence I had previously been unaware at, between the river and the end of Perry Avenue (and also tested out some new local infrastructure, the pedestrian lights where the path crosses Livingstone Avenue in Ivanhoe).

11 AM

Run ((orienteering)) 48:00 [3] 6.1 km (7:52 / km)

Saturday morning orienteering training closer to home today - back to Darebin Parklands, running an old course from the mid-2000s on the 2002 map - which I fairly quickly discovered represents a terrain which has changed a fair bit, both in expected ways (new tracks, and old ones that no longer exist) and unexpected ones (clearings which have been made into ponds and wetlands). This made it hard to pinpoint control sites and I often had trouble being exactly sure of where I was. Happy with the running side, though - after an early reminder that the scarp on the west side of the creek is best avoided if you want to get anywhere fast, was going reasonably well - not running the steepest bits but the more gradual climbs out of the valley passed without my back (or anything else) throwing a wobbly, which I'll take as a positive.

Don't think there were as many people around in the park as there were on weekends in April, although of course the weather is colder (although sunny).

Friday Jul 17, 2020 #

4 PM

Cycling 1:00:00 [3] 23.0 km (2:37 / km)

Late afternoon ride on the La Trobe loop, sandwiched between a couple of meetings - certainly nicer than it would have been doing it in the fog this morning. Was full of energy for this one for no obvious reason; hills felt relatively easy and although a few traffic delays slowed things down early on, settled in very well in the second half. Seemed a pity to use this mood on a ride rather than a run; hopefully it will stick into the weekend.

Thursday Jul 16, 2020 #

8 AM

Run 41:00 [3] 7.0 km (5:51 / km)

Didn't expect much for this morning but worked out OK; the first (small) incline set things off but a bit of stretching settled that, and although the rest didn't feel as good as the later stages on Tuesday, still got another session under my belt - in 2020, managing to get three weekday runs in is a triumph of sorts. Very slow early on but a bit less so later. Not going to try for four in a row tomorrow.

Wednesday Jul 15, 2020 #

4 PM

Run intervals 12:00 [4] 2.0 km (6:00 / km)

Once again out in the late afternoon after a reasonably full-on day. Felt a bit marginal going there; past experience is that if I can manage the warm-up, I can usually manage the session, but today I started to tighten up during the last couple of reps (which is unusual). Plenty of activity in the park, both on two legs and four.

Run warm up/down 27:00 [3] 4.0 km (6:45 / km)

Really struggled on the way back; I'll be pleasantly surprised if I manage to come up in the morning.

Tuesday Jul 14, 2020 #

4 PM

Run 41:00 [3] 7.0 km (5:51 / km)

After a morning false start, got out in the afternoon in what was a welcome break in a day of otherwise almost unbroken meetings between 9 and 7. (In the days before my back started to become troublesome, I used to very much like running close to sunset on clear winter evenings, perhaps more so in Canberra as the colder air settled in). First 10 minutes was reasonably hard work, but gradually settled down after that and was moving fairly well in the last 15 minutes, to the point where I think I would have been quite comfortable going further had I felt so inclined.

Pilates 40:00 [3]

Morning Pilates session. I have some interesting company for this at present - someone semi-retired who was a lawyer for the Fitzroy Legal Service (well known as advocates for the downtrodden). Did a certain amount of swapping of stories of media adventures and misadventures (OK, so I'm not the only person who's done an interview out of a bathroom because it was the quietest space available).

Session went OK, but back was not the best today, so maybe it's as well the MFR runs are on hold for now. An attempt to go out myself later in the day was abortive.

Sunday Jul 12, 2020 #

11 AM

Run 1:02:00 [3] 10.5 km (5:54 / km)

Was hoping to go long today but was feeling a bit marginal from the start, though kept plugging away. Back had a bit of a flare-up around 30 minutes in and I was almost on the point of calling it a day early, but decided to give it another few minutes and it settled down (a bit). Was happy to get to the hour mark (which makes it my biggest running week this year) on a day when things weren't going smoothly, even if I'd hoped for 15-20 minutes more.

Cleared the remaining streets of Fairfield today (most of which were fairly close to home), and picked up a few awkwardly placed ones of the next stage, the rest of the postcode (i.e. Alphington). Never went outside a 1km radius from my house.

Saturday Jul 11, 2020 #

11 AM

Run ((orienteering)) 36:00 [3] *** 4.3 km (8:22 / km)
spiked:7/8c

O training at Westerfolds - didn't want to go too far from home. This was regular far-end-of-long-run territory for me when living in Heidelberg (and of course home to many OV meetings) but I don't think I've ever orienteered on the map here (which has a permanent course).

I wasn't actually expecting it to be that pleasant on a damp day - lots of mud and long damp grass was what I was anticipating. The mud was there in places but the long grass wasn't, and it was quite nice running through the area (which I think has more tree cover than the map suggested). Back was fairly marginal so didn't push up the hills; just a little high coming across the slope on one control.

Westerfolds' permanent course control numbering follows no obvious logic, so doing the controls in numerical order, as I was, means going back and forth across the map a lot. That suited me fine; I should be able to get at least two more runs out of this. Heading out this way also gave me an excuse to drop into one of my old haunts, the (very good) Heidelberg supermarket, on the way home, even if a football scarf didn't work so well as an improvised face covering (too hard to keep it above the nose).

And I even saw a ranger take someone to task for having a dog off-leash in an on-leash zone.

Friday Jul 10, 2020 #

9 AM

Cycling 1:01:00 [3] 22.2 km (2:45 / km)

Morning ride on the La Trobe loop, a bit later than usual after an 8am meeting. Felt reasonably strong up the hills but didn't finish off quite as well as I'd hoped. Quite a cold morning, though not enough to require gloves.

Thursday Jul 9, 2020 #

1 PM

Run 42:00 [3] 7.1 km (5:55 / km)

False start in the morning (possibly something to do with having been sitting in a meeting since 5am), but worked surprisingly well - back was fine and moving more or less OK (although I thought trying to run up the two-steps-forward-one-step-back bank on the Bellfield side of Darebin Creek might be taking things a bit too far). Nice lunchtime to be out too.

In the process spotted a small park named after someone I actually knew (from Ivanhoe Labor days, though that was only a small part of her life).

First time for a while I've managed three runs during the week; now let's see if I can manage two on the weekend.

Reading the text of the public health directions, it appears to be legal to travel of exercise or outdoor recreation as long as you don't leave Greater Melbourne/Mitchell Shire (though it may be best not to push this early on while the police feel like they have to make a show of force). This prompted me to think about what maps Mitchell Shire has but the pickings are fairly thin; two tough and probably badly outdated granite maps at Mount Hickey and Warrigul Rocks, and the Strath Creek plateau which wasn't that exciting when I first moved to Melbourne and probably hasn't been improved by post-Black Saturday regrowth. (The Yarra Ranges shire, which is counted as Greater Melbourne, is also rather thin for maps, especially runnable ones).

Run intervals 12:00 [4] 2.0 km (6:00 / km)

All Nations intervals for the first time in a few weeks. Haven't been sleeping that well this week and seemed to be awake most of the time from 4am today (would be nice to swap this with tomorrow when I've got a 5am meeting), but managed to get this session under my belt OK - if a bit lacking in pace.

Also managed to get a nice dinner with my parents in before we all retreat into our shells for the next few weeks.

Run warm up/down 24:00 [3] 4.0 km (6:00 / km)

Warm-up and down. As with Monday, settled my back down with a minute or so of stretching about 5 minutes in (normally traffic stops serve this function but I got a clear run across the two main roads in each direction today).

Tuesday Jul 7, 2020 #

8 AM

Swimming 38:00 [2] 1.0 km (38:00 / km)

Morning swim at Northcote, not quite as slow as last time. Shoulder starting to get a bit sore in the later stages, but if it's a swimming injury it won't be tested for a while: I had a feeling it would probably be the last swim for some time as we slid back towards square one, and so it proved.

At least there's a bit more clarity this time round as to what is and isn't possible in the exercise department (last time a lot depended on whether you encountered a cop and if so, what sort of mood they were in), but it's still going to be a frustrating time ahead - especially as I suspect the risk aversion this time round is going to be extreme, so it could drag on a lot longer than six weeks.

Pilates 40:00 [3]

Monday morning Pilates, with a full complement for the first time in a few months. This meant doing things in a different order to usual, which in turn meant it felt like things were a bit out of kilter (since the first couple of exercises normally get me loosened up). Not bad once going though.
5 PM

Run 32:00 [3] 5.3 km (6:02 / km)

MFR Monday night. Very similar story to last week - fell off the back after a few minutes and had to stop for a bit to do some stretching/mobilising, but OK once I did so (on a lot of runs from home a traffic stop fills this function; perhaps I need to start this session a few minutes early?). Even managed to make a better fist of the (small) climbs up from the river than I have in recent weeks (and ticked off the one remaining bit of nominally-Fairfield road south of the railway line).

Sunday Jul 5, 2020 #

11 AM

Run 49:00 [3] 8.2 km (5:59 / km)

Feeling very flat today - back was not too bad after an iffy first 15 minutes, but never really had much energy. Not the day to push boundaries but at least got something vaguely respectable on the board. Headed down to the north side of the Yarra for the first time in a long time, discovering (a) that there are some nice pockets there (b) it's muddy and (c) you can't get much further east than the bridge because part of the bank has collapsed (although you can get up into the south end of the new development, which is more advanced than I thought it was - there even appear to be some people living there). Cleared most of the remaining streets in the southern half of Fairfield (including the end of Jayne's).

Not as much of it was running as I'd hoped, but this is still the longest week I've done this year.
9 PM

Note

Currently looking at the 2001 Easter results, and noted that the results list someone called Geoff Lawson as the winner in M45. (At least Geoff Lawson is almost the right age).

Run ((orienteering)) 56:41 [3] *** 6.6 km (8:35 / km) +155m 7:41 / km
spiked:14/17c

Good to be back - the Bendigo event at Birds Reef was my first proper event since March. Heading out there revealed that there was considerable rust in the mining areas, both physical and technical - got most of the controls more or less OK except for 11, where I dropped a minute or so (it was unhelpful seeing my father looking around where the control wasn't), but never felt especially confident while doing so. (The printing of the brown seemed quite faint?). Couldn't run up hills much, either. Still, it's a starting point, and if I can get more solid weeks of training and a few more events under my belt, hopefully the trajectory will be upwards?

Friday Jul 3, 2020 #

8 AM

Cycling 1:06:00 [3] 24.0 km (2:45 / km)

Got out early (while the weather was still half-reasonable) for an out-and-back on the Koonung path, mostly fairly easy although there are a couple of short sharp climbs. Definitely not as many people out at 8 on a winter morning compared to, say 3 on a sunny autumn afternoon.

Thursday Jul 2, 2020 #

12 PM

Run 41:00 [3] 7.0 km (5:51 / km)

Got out at lunchtime. Not especially convincing but not uncomfortable enough to stop, and perhaps a bit better in the last 10 minutes or so. Once again did some street-collecting, this time in the southern part of the suburb (have almost everything south of Heidelberg Road done now). The light blue dashed lines of the map are important in some contexts these days, although Fairfield and Alphington share a postcode.

Cycling 41:00 [3] 15.0 km (2:44 / km)

After a false start on a run (so much for getting pumped up by having just made a Significant Scientific Finding), I headed out for a ride instead up through Heidelberg. Quite a windy afternoon; didn't feel the wind that much but the watch doesn't lie (about a minute slower than normal out, a minute faster back). Quite a bit of traffic in the outward direction.

It's difficult to argue too much with the real estate agent's assessment that a house for sale on Grange Road is "ripe for redevelopment".
