Got with Phil at the start, we tried to get ahead of a big group before getting on Old Albany Rd. but they caught us and it was pretty crowded. I had to get off once when the guy in front stalled.
I felt fairly tired for the 1st 37 miles, to the lunch stop. Both knees were cramping or tightening on Green River road, didn't bode well with 25 miles to go, and certainly more hills to climb. After lunch we road with a group along the river, and after a climb up Nelson Rd. a fellow stopped and asked if we knew where to go.....and it was Walter Goodridge! Had not seen him in years. We road the rest of the way together. Conversations with Walter were a nice distraction on the climbs. The dinner afterward was pretty normal, buffet style. Only difference was they handed you a can of beer instead of delivery from a tap. Which was fine with me as I never drink it there and had brought a thermos to store it in.
So, was a much better time than I had anticipated, didn't get rained on, road with some nice friends, and had plenty to eat.

1st leg for the NE Vets team. Within a minute I was running on my own, compass to 1. No one in sight until 2 or sorunners at the control, then they were gone and saw no one, even looking back once or twice,arriving at the stadium run through. The last loop was a simple 3 control white level, so ran that really hard.
The HR shows I was in zone 5 for most of the time, and it sure felt that way.

Bummer on 1 as I went right to the control feature, no control, relocated and then saw it....the code was foot of W cliff, which I had not read carefully (I would have said between the cliffs). Other controls were in thick waist high vegetation, hard to see the rock feature, and on one control, I was a bit nervous having to go over a boulder field high on hill, which was also covered with thick bushes (and despite the mess there, I had the fastest split). Ran hard when I could , but lost time at several controls when I couldn't see the control right there.

Ran faster, which was easy as my 1st leg was downhill. Took me 20 seconds to find the line to the 1st control as it went through the finish, which was handy as a waypoint down the hill.
After 4, the course turned uphill, which I decided I had to run, everyone around me was walking, but hey, it's a race! This lead up to the spectator control and then a short downhill to a rock detailed area. I thought this was pretty good course setting, the orienteerers had to stay focused after maybe exhausting themselves on the tough climb.
I spotted a yellow jersey ahead as I went through the detailed rock section, he seemed to be hitting all my controls, so that was a bit of a help. At 9, I realized it was Phil. Traveresed the hillside to the finish control on my own, but then decided, as I could not get ahead of her, to just follow Ali into the finish ;)
