Easy loosener with the guys from work. Felt surprisingly good although the pace was very easy.

Bright Alpine Climb - 4 Peaks Day 4: Mt Buffalo

The final day and the pressure was on, I had a 7 second lead overall on Kez and 2 minutes on Rob. We all started together along with Robbie who set the early pace until Kez took over. After a few minutes tucked in behind Kez I moved around and then pushed on to try and get a gap. In hindsight I probably should have settled in for a bit longer as I suffered for this move for much of the remainder of the race.

I suspected that Rob might be a bit more of a threat today and sure enough after 10 minutes or so he had reeled me in and as I was still suffering from my earlier move he just blew straight past me, keeping him within 2 minutes seemed like it was going to be a tall order.

Luckily at this point the route flattened out for a section and I was able to regroup and get in to a better rhythmn. Rob continued to pull away and was soon out of sight. I pushed on and managed to hold on to DaveO when he came past up near the top to hold on to some of my lead over Rob from the previous couple of days.

Finished up in second overall in 19-34 age group which was a nice surprise but in the end only by 6 seconds in front of third. What a cracking long weekend!

Bright Alpine Climb - 4 Peaks Day 3: Mt Bogong

The steepest day today. It was fair to say that the whole crew was feeling quite a bit of trepidation for todays race, with the steepest climb and a forecast for snow. As it turned out we had blue skies and sunshine and even the gradient wasn't as bad as we had feared.

For a steep race the first two kms were unsettlingly flat and were at a fairly fast clip with Hanny setting the pace. I felt pretty comfortable early on and tried to settle in to a similar rhythmn to yesterdays race up Feathertop. I started to pull away from Rob and Kez and felt pretty good until we started to reach the steeper ridges. Craney came flying past and then gradually my legs started to tighten up and lose power. By the time we reached the final steep spur I had pretty much popped completely and Rob and Kez were closing quickly from behind. I was pretty lucky that the finish was moved down from the top due to cold and windy conditions otherwise there was no way I would have held the boys off.

After recovering we walked up the final couple of hundred metres to the top to bag Victoria's highest peak and enjoy the views.

Bright Alpine Climb - 4 Peaks Day 2: Mt Feathertop

I pulled up pretty well after Mystic Peak and had the word from Craney that the slope today was pretty constant. Manged to slip into a good pace from the start of the hill and then just ground it out all the way to the top.

Was a bit surprised to drop Kez and Rob early on and was expecting them to come back up to me at any stage. Craney was also chasing us down so I had a real sense of being pursued the whole way up the mountain. Was pleased to hold them all off and really enjoyed the alpine views.

Bright Alpine Climb - 4 Peaks Day 1: Mystic Peak

After a bit of a calf niggle in the week leading up to this I was pretty apprehensive about these races and not particularly confident of completing them all. The name of the game today was to get through unscathed.

Some crazily steep slopes today, managed to keep a pretty good rhythm up the hill and arrived at the top just in time to see a paraglider launch off the top. Awesome views down to Bright and across to the proper mountains. Took it easy on the way down.
