Running race (JPMorgan Corporate Challe) 19:12 [4] 5.62 km (3:25 / km) +55m 3:15 / km

JPMorgan Corporate challenge at Centennial Park in Sydney with the ASC team of Philo Saunders, Michael Roeger and Andrew McGowan. This was a mission to take the team win and the prize of a trip to the World Final next year.

I was feeling good for this although a bit uncertain about pacing having not raced at anything near this distance for a few months. I thought I was in shape for about 17 minute 5k pace which equated to 3:24 pace.

I started nice and relaxed up the first short hill and through the first km, I then got a bit too excited and put in a surge as I though my pace had dropped too far (actually it was a gradual uphill and my pace was fine). I quickly overtook a big group including the leading females but I ended up paying for this at the end of the race.

I tried to relax down the steady downhill section through 2km and could see our first two team members clearing out in front in 1st and 2nd place. It was feeling harder than it should at this stage and I already knew that it was going to be a tough day out.

The course profile was now flat and I was dangling just off the back of a small group in around 20th place, I worked to pick up the back of the pack and managed this by 3km but was really starting to suffer.

From 3-4km seemed to take an age but somehow I was managing to hang with the back of the pack, I knew from 4km to home it was mostly gradual uphill and I was going to be having a constant argument with the central governor.

Sure enough I popped off the back of the pack and started tieing up badly, since this was a team event though and every second counted I kept pushing, trying desperately to keep the pace up and my legs turning over.

I made it to 5k at 17:01 but was falling to pieces and at this stage our 4th team member overtook me after doing a far better job of pacing. Just 600m to go so I gritted my teeth and pushed on, finishing in 19'12.

Luckily for me Philo, Roegs and Andrew all had great runs and I managed to hold on to have a reasonable one. We took out the team competition by a few minutes, now just waiting to find out where the World Final will be next year. Hoping for New York or London but it will be pretty gutting if it is Sydney!

Looks like we will be close to the top rated team for the World Final which should be in May-June next year. My goal is to improve by 30-60 seconds by then, a good first start will be to do some 5k and 10k road races. Be great to win the big one next year!
