Leg 2 (nav) - with Richard CW - 35th on leg, bringing team from 76th to 46th.
Main climb up to CP1 was struggling to stay with 2:55-marathon-last-weekend Richard. Elected to cut a bit of the corner but much of a muchness; not a lot of route choice (42nd). Passed quite a few teams on the ascent. Went N on the next leg which retrospectively doesn't look better than S but it was a high split position (28th) so I probably got it right. With R on the descent but again struggling to stay with him on the climb. Flat leg next (27th) where we were similar, but he was getting away on the next climb (30th) and down to the sheepfold.
The next leg I chose to cut directly up rather than go along and steeper up like everyone else - I think that was a bad call as meant crossing more stream reentrants. 46th on that leg, maybe lost 30s. Next one was the major route choice and I chose much wider round than the train were going - again though, really not much in it, possibly a 20s loss again for 37th. Then 39th on the downhill leg where I thought I smashed it but had to wait for R a couple of times. Overtook the leading women's team right near the end and held it though, which was pretty cool.
Good result although couldn't match last year's 30th place - although we didn't have Tom F's 10th place on L1 this year! I felt I ran pretty well. Having organised all our 4 teams I was a bit stressed before everyone had arrived, but in the end it was all very smooth.
In a very competitive field (it was the British championships after all!) the ladies V40 team finished 185th/220 (8th in their category). The mixed team were just ahead in 182nd and were 20th of 30 mixed teams. The men's V40 team were 115th overall and also 8th in their category - but that one was very tightly fought and they were just 11 minutes away from a podium position - a great achievement. The men's open team were 47th overall and only 5 minutes outside of last year's excellent top 30 result. https://www.sportident.co.uk/results/HelmHill/2021...
