12th!!
https://www.sportident.co.uk/results/CFRA/2021/Was...

Nearly 40 minutes faster than last year. I am in good form at the moment.

1 Whin Rigg 39:07 (43:44 in 2019)
Started pretty briskly. Chatting to a guy and girl I think I know but not actually who they are. The guy contoured round Illgill (on the route we all took last year) and I wasn't brave enough to join him on our own. He gained about 30s doing it, so it is the right choice, but it didn't even look like he was on a trod. Strava flyby reqd here.

2. Greendale 22:24
Had Allen just behind me on the descent, where we smashed it and I gained 5 places. Thought he was just behind me on the flat bit but he'd dropped back by Greendale.

3. Seatallan 39:14 (ie 1:01:38 vs 1:06:35)
Really unpleasantly humid. Only lost one place up here but it's my worst split position (30th). Lots of people stopping for water at the Gill but I'd had a bit at at Greendale, and still had plenty of my original litre left. Definitely ran more of this ascent than I have done in the past. Clif bar nearish the top, probably a bit too late since the descent quite steep.

4. Pillar 46:05 (52:06)
Best split position (6th) and gained 5 places. There is basically a trod the entire way now, I'm sure it wasn't like that three years ago! Theres just one section of rocks where you go straight up, and then the rest is contouring. Then feeling really strong on the Pillar ascent on confident once on the BG route.

5. Great Gable 47:48 (55:20)
All lines pretty good; picked up another three places. All of them were the group that stopped for water at Sail beck, and I didn't. Probably should have, retrospectively. One place, at Looking Stead, I knew there was a line down to the left which I thought I'd found, but the guy behind me cut earlier and had a beautiful line which gained him 30s. Asked him about it afterwards and he said it was largely a guess! He was followed by Jasmin Paris so she overtook me too. I overtook them at Sail but then I cut of lot of corner under Beckhead Tarn and that seemed to lose me a bit of time; it's shorter but I guess slower over the rougher ground. Got to pay attention to end up on a trod that actually goes up to the col! Just after the (dry) deep stream crossing it gets a bit vague. I stayed far left on the GG climb which I think is the best route coming down but going up the shortest route looks better. Jasmin got past but we were pretty much together at the summit.

6. Esk Hause 34:09 (39:47)
Gained a place despite dire line off Gable. Seduced by a grassy looking section which turned into a vile scree gully which was super dangerous, basically within sight of the main line but couldn't get back to it. Definitely lost a couple of minutes here. Cut the bottom bit nicely though and then ran a reasonable amount to Esk. Got water at the stream just before sprinkling tarn, which is sooner than the past two years - it was super humid. Next time water at Sail in addition to Calf Cove would be sensible.

7. Scafell 27:44 (33:08)
Gained another place, into 12th. Cut the Calf corner and took the contouring Ill route, then took the roundabout Scafell line and nearly missed the marshals as they were a bit lower down on the tourist path - in good company as Ricky Lightfood did miss them totally and had to be reinstated.

8. Lingmell 18:25 (21:38)
Somehow lost a place here although no idea what happened? It was in the clag though. Didn't see anyone and my split time was good. Would be good to have a look at if it's possible to cut any of the rocky and busy tourist path other than the last bit, as it felt really slow. Impressed the tourists, though. Then I think my cut to Lingmell needed to be just a touch higher as I had to drop and go up again crossing the stream, whereas 100m higher up I could've avoided this and the subsequent rocks. Fell over once and calf cramped right near the stile, but ok once got going again.

Finish. 4:57 (5:59)
Slightly shorter than previous years as didn't have to run around in the field. Got my place back again without seeing anyone, so some quirk obvs.

Overall, awesome day. Maybe without the Great Gable rubbishness and a better line near the end, couldve been top 10.
Only actually 6 minutes behind 6th! Then there's a 10 min gap to 5th. But really pleased with this result and gives proper validation im definitely improving.

Also - found the plaque that I've seen twice before but couldn't remember what race it was on. It's on the Calf Cove corner cut, and it's for Joanna Ruth Lang. I've googled her and there's nothing... Didn't have time to stop and get read the thing, but now I know where it is (and that I didn't dream it) I can come back in future. I just like the idea of having a memorial somewhere that isn't even on a path and that no-one knows is there.

2:18 faster than 2019. Slightly shorter and less ascent than last time since they started us a little way up the hill - the c.30m and 13m ascent the GPS gives as the difference is probably about right. It's not 2:18 worth, anyway; maybe the 18s I guess.

Really pleased with this, ran a bit of the first very steep ascent and then the whole rest of the course. Had forgotten a lot of the bit after the first steep section (ie it continues to be uphill for ages, just not steep) for most of the way to halfway, and then the whole second half is gently downhill. Put in 100% effort and rewarded by overtaking Allen on the second climb and then clinging on on the descent for a 5 second victory margin, so first MaccH out of at least 10. 4 in the top 15 so we have a good shout at the team prize, if there is one!

Pretty wrecked now but glad the long distance hills have had an effect over short distances too.

Note
(rest day)

Not much motivation now the JN is done tbh. The club run was from Sutton Reservoir and I don't like the routes from around there that much, which didn't help.

39th today and 35th overall out of 78, so still top half. A few places ahead of John Abbott luckily! Good to catch up with him afterwards.

I had a pretty good nights sleep for a change (probably JN-related; was pretty tired) but Em didn't. Descriptions in advance (6.45am as per) made it look like today would be significantly easier than yesterday, and this was pretty much true controls-wise. Bit annoyed at #2 that the clag and the rock mapping led us through some totally unmapped horrible stuff, but at least it looks like most other teams had the same problems. I was happy with my Great Gable most of the way and then BG-line cut to the col rather than Aaron Slack, but didn't see the winner's route choice of avoiding either and contouring a lot: much better route. Good choices rest of the time though. As yesterday we lost most positions on the final steep rocky descent to the finish.

Saw someone literally running up it which was mental - I actually had to stop and watch for a bit, it was amazing to see. I couldn't have run more than 20m of that kind of steepness and he was making it look trivial. Don't know who it was; tried to find them on Strava afterwards but failed.

Overall, enjoyed it and made me want to get back into some MMs again - didn't seem to suffer from carrying the weight all that much as expected.

Not sure if I'm sold on the Salomon XA25 as a MM backpack - liked the race vest style bottle holders on the front as they definitely encouraged me to drink a lot more, but disliked the lack of a stretchy membrane on the back where you can stow a coat without removing the bag. Will have to get my mum too add one :)

Proud of Em for getting round and enjoying most of it (or at least claiming to) - hope she does some more in future.
