Edit: 7th; 12mins behind 2nd; who was 38 mins behind 1st?! Amazing.
7th I think.
2nd for the first 6k or so (1st disappeared into the distance right from the start, but it turns out he's some kind of international and smashed the course record, so that's all right) along the flat splashy paths. Amazingly, not raining despite forecast of heavy rain all day. Vis was pretty good for the whole race so got some good views; don't think it was amazing high up but we didn't go high up :)
When we started the climb, a group of 4 who'd been with me from the start passed me and gradually pulled away. Then after Sty Head they nailed the downhill to Wasdale and were well ahead - too rocky and slippery for me. Another guy passed me too, so into 7th. I think the climb wasn't severe enough, and the race too short, for the poles to be much use. Which is what I expected, just wanted to use them for the practice really.
Up Black Sail could see the 4 in the distance and also the lone guy, they weren't pulling away but I wasn't getting closer. Then on the descent they probably took a less rocky line (I just followed the gpx) and I didn't see them after that. Up to Scarth I was passed by Matt Curry (who I met at the end and beat me by 3 mins at Borrowdale) who had paced it really well; running up everything and so was faster than me with poles. Didn't see him at all on the descent to Buttermere so he must have nailed that.
Then didn't see anyone up Fleetwith/Haystacks pass; rain lasted for just long enough for me to put my coat on and then immediately remove it again. Going pretty strongly here and caught the lone runner on the Tramway down to Honister, so back to 7th, and despite missing a turning and losing a minute, finished in 7th.
Feeling reasonable the whole way round, could easily have run further (which is a good sign). Only one hip hurt which is progress! Weird not to be doing any big hills in the Lakes. I'd probably do the course again just to see if it was faster without poles, but not if there was a clash.
