Very nearly didn't go to this, got back late last night and it was quite a tiring day as it was. Nearly falling asleep on the drive there.

But actually - glad I did. Definitely a race for trail shoes unless it's been really wet - it hadn't. Lots of the route on rocky trails but it wasn't too bad.
Took the first climb gently - possibly too much so because I was struggling to see the people in front of me to be able to follow. Didn't expect to have to get the map out quite as early as I did. As usual, probably trusted others too much near the start but it paid off this time.

Spent most of the race on my own. Someone overtook me at #1 Pole Bank and then one more person just after #2, but I re-passed him at Caer Caradoc and didn't see him again. Caught quite a few going up the final hill.

Found the three steep climbs to the E hard. Went straight up CC rather than round the track which might be slower, but it was nice running along the ridge.

Right decision to carry 1L fluids I think, meant I could drink when I wanted and didn't have to stop. Ate a couple of Clif bars on Ragleth and Lawley which I think helped sustain me to the end.

It was very hot at times, 25°ish. Fine on the tops with the breeze but less so lower down.

Think this is a pretty good result. Good route as well, although badly signed in places (shouted at by marshal as if I was an idiot; "it's THAT way, you're meant to follow the tapes") - thanks mate, great advice, before you helped I was deliberately ignoring them.

Some of the descents very technical which was great and potential to go faster now I know the course - although definite injury potential.

Watched a full sheepdog attempt for the first time too which was impressive.

Hot day.

Walking long (Bleaklow Hike) 7:19:24 [1] 31.11 km (14:07 / km) +719m 12:40 / km
ahr:86 max:131 shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 290 (grey)

With my friend Dave from school. Good to catch up, managed to chat without pause for the entire route and for a few hours in the Thai restaurant after which was impressive, we clearly still get on ok.
Found a fun rock which we first found in our gold dofe but have failed to re-find since. GPS made this significantly easier.

Only remembered about GPS after we had got pretty lost in the middle of Bleaklow, we were at least an hour wading through heather. Fun times.

Running - Road/Track (Part of Bollington 10k) 42:42 [2] 8.57 km (4:59 / km) +98m 4:43 / km
ahr:125 max:147 shoes: Brooks Ravenna 9

Pretty nice for a road 10k but pavement disappeared for quite a while and the road was quite twisty, so probably won't bother again unless it's the actual race.
Achilles definitely hurts more the day after a rest day.

Note
(rest day)

Left work late, painted some more fence, used some filler.
Getting bored of DIY and still plenty to do :(

Running - Trail (MH Fell Training) 1:31:00 [3] 12.01 km (7:35 / km) +393m 6:31 / km
ahr:123 max:148 shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 290 (grey)

Fairly gentle recovery run, adjacent to but not on the Roaches. Fire damage pretty extensive and paths along the top are closed, seems overkill really but there was definitely still a scent of burning on the air at times.
Starting to get a bit chilly, very cold hands by the end.

Just ahead of first lady Caitlin Rice.

18 seconds faster than last year - boom.
The first climb didn't feel as hard as last year, but a lot of the rest of the race did. Pushed very hard on the uphills and tried to relax on the downs a bit more than usual - except when we got to the dark vaguely technical downhill through the woods; turns out I'm relatively good at that and overtook three people in the last km. In fact overall paced pretty well; overtaking throughout. Good conditions again.

That's 3/3 races where I've improved from last year, if the trend continues for the remaining two next week I'll be very happy. Not as much improvement as I'd have hoped for, but still, progress is progress.

Orienteering - Forest race (White Rose Team Competiti) 32:37 [5] 5.93 km (5:30 / km) +123m 4:59 / km
ahr:142 max:166 shoes: X-talon 212 (blk/flro) - Nov17

To conclude my least successful weekend of orienteering EVER, mp'd the relay too.

Good format - basically 'not a relay', whole team starts at once, on different courses, then whoever is the first back does one final course. Then the winner is just the time from all 4legs added together.
I like it.
After the first 5 controls once things had settled down and it was clear who was doing which course, in a group with Andy Llewellyn and Andrew Preston. I was keeping up ok but never at the front. Took different route choices on a few occasions which I'm pleased I did, but they usually brought me out slightly further back.I was usually in 2nd or 3rd but the leader kept changing.
Andy P and I got away from Andy L at #10 but he caught me again by 13, I sneakily got back in front on the run in to finish about 1s up but 15 or so down on first. We were all the first back in our teams so we were together on the final course too. AP and I took the easier path route on 4 but undershot, allowing AL to take the victory. I couldn't stick with AP and had to settle for third. But it was really good racing.

Obviously the MP (control 3 first part) was frustrating, didn't want to lose time by unfolding the map to check the codes.usually I'd rip the descriptions off the side of the map, for some reason I didn't even consider doing that for this event, obviously wish I had now!

Both this event and the sprint were definite highlights compared to the forest events.

Looking forward to some more o now, but another 2 weeks to wait as the fell running this weekend looks better.
