Running - Road/Track race (Porthcawl parkrun) 19:04 [5] 5.0 km (3:49 / km) +28m 3:43 / km
shoes: Adidas Adios 3

Scenic. One marginal slope. Very windy on the way back.

Orienteering - Forest race (Welsh champs Merthyr Mawr) 1:28:25 [5] 12.14 km (7:17 / km) +144m 6:53 / km
shoes: X-Talon 190 (blue)

Pretty poor performance. Some good legs though, and really enjoyed it.

Aim was to play it safe and be careful; this was working most of the way to #1 before I was distracted by another control and didn't stop to think about where I was, and then ran to another control which also wasn't mine before relocating - 60s.
For some reason decided to guess #3 rather than go to the obvious PJ and ended up way too far E - 30s. Went via another control to 4 and then stood next to it for ages wondering where it was - 30s. Despite having found 5 on the way to 1, still overshot it - 30s.

So the woods were not my finest performance.

6 and 7 were both good legs! #focusonthepositives

As on most of the earlier controls the scale caught me out on 8. Couldn't work out for ages what these woods were to my right, eventually realised they were the ones by the stream but then had no idea how long along the path I'd gone; guessed wrongly about which bridge I was at and eventually attacked the control from the SW...found it perfectly; micro-navigation fine; macro-navigation fail. 3mins.

Pretty happy with 9 until being in the circle standing on the hill to the SW wondering where the control was, then checked the description and saw it was North side and there was also an extra knoll - 30s. Micro/macro reverse that time; pretty happy with going basically straight picking up the groups of trees.

Happy with 10-14 although lost 30s on 11 hitting the fence way too far W and having to go back to the crossing point.

Circuitous route to 15 and was lucky I came out at the fence kink as I think I'd have struggled otherwise.

Happy with 16-19 although lost another 30s on 18 being too far S but not knowing whether to turn S or N.

Despite having lost 7 minutes so far I was reasonably happy with my run at this point (partly because I'd forgotton/blanked out most of the early mistakes) so maybe I relaxed a bit too much on 20...
There was a path most of the way there - and that was my downfall because I just followed it and mentally switched off (maybe getting tired as well) and missed a junction - then went a really long way down the wrong path and massively struggled to relocate; found several other controls; eventually recognised a block of trees I'd see from 8-9 and the control was trivial after that. Unfortunately I had lost 10 mins (!!) by this point.

Heart wasn't really in it from that point on, luckily course was nearly over. Bad route to 21 trying to follow a fence which turned out to be quite tree-y, but no issues with the last few controls.

17 minutes of losses isn't a new low, but this was definitely the worst run I can remember for ages. Glad I have a holiday to forget about it!

Running - Road/Track (Run in the rain) 49:47 [3] 10.1 km (4:56 / km) +47m 4:49 / km
(sick) shoes: Nike Pegasus 32

Decided against one track session preholiday still with a bit of a cough so went for Daryl's recovery run in the rain. Pretty brisk for recovery but we were both feeling pretty good.

Damp though.
