Running race (Dyrham Park 10k) 43:00 [5] 10.33 km (4:10 / km) +168m 3:51 / km

Not as flat as I was expecting...course went up the hill by the house that I walked up yesterday in the club champs...twice! Did manage to keep running both times although it was a close-run* thing. 50m climb in 300m - sounds easy when put like that.

With three guys from Bitton and a Team Bath for the first 2k or so, then went past one of the Bittons (who I recognised; he has really thin arms and he always sets off too fast) and the TB (up the hill). At the top, the two Bittons disappeared into the distance and I spent the rest of the race in 3rd with at least a minute in either direction.

Although apparently I came 2nd because the leader got lost - feel sorry for him because he was pretty far ahead; but I've had my fair share of getting lost in trail races, so I'll take it.

Not that warm; but still pretty warm. Hard work for the slow time! Lots of bends in the meadow as well. But it was very pretty I suppose.

Running race (BOK club championships) 28:04 [5] 5.25 km (5:21 / km) +195m 4:31 / km
ahr:153 max:164

600/600 points.

Route chosen not great, probably could have avoided some of the climb.convinced for a while I'd missed a control, but turned out I'd got it at the beginning.hooray!

Walked up the hill which was pretty depressing; generally feeling unfit and found it tough running through the grass.

Running (Towpath 10k) 38:52 [4] 9.87 km (3:56 / km) +39m 3:52 / km
shoes: Saucony Virrata 2

I decided to treat this as a training run and aim for negative splits, first 5k in 20:00 and second 5k as fast as possible.

To my intense surprise this was pretty successful. I aimed for 4 min ks and was never more than 5s up or down, and was at 5k at 19:52.

Then did the second 5k in 19:00, passing people all the way (which was psychologically great). By the end I was catching and passing people who I'd normally be racing the whole way round.

The lesson is definitely start slower! Not as much as this perhaps though; still 100s off a PB, but definitely worth bearing in mind.

Note

45 miles (72km) this week. It's been a busy one. I can't imagine doing that much every week - but there are people out there doing double. Nutters.

Running race (Dundry Thunder) 44:40 [5] 10.2 km (4:23 / km) +301m 3:49 / km
ahr:152 max:168

5th place - very pleased.

First climb felt dreadful, and very hard to get any pace back afterwards, but took the downhill steady and caught a few on the final hill. Lots of climb for a 10k non-fell race!

Won a bottle of wine for 3rd senior male :)

Orienteering race (BOK Urban Portishead) 42:26 [5] 9.06 km (4:41 / km) +147m 4:20 / km
ahr:149 max:161 shoes: Saucony Virrata 2

I haven't made a significant mistake in an urban race for ages and had consequently become overconfident.

Therefore I deserved this.

My few minutes revision of the map from last year in the car before the start was extremely counter-productive, as a crossable fence last year turned into an uncrossable fence this year. (90s loss on number 1)

Took some safe routes round the edges of things which weren't always the fastest but overall happy with all choices up to 13.

Lured into a false sense of security by the planner after a lot of easy controls and failed to check description for 14 - went to the wrong side, realised and then missed the way back out, eventually realised...(60s at least)

Happy with rest although didn't consider western route to 26 which may have been better since avoids the steps.

7 or so mins behind Adam, 3 behind Tom, 3 annoying seconds behind Matt...the urban league title is all to play for with 3 events left!

Running (B+W Training) 1:07:27 [3] 9.56 km (7:03 / km) +40m 6:55 / km
ahr:116 max:162 shoes: Saucony Kinvara 4

Wanted to do medium group intervals but disallowed by Chris due to race tomorrow (despite being 1000 years old he is pretty scary when angered) so a few of us went for what started off as a slow run for 6.7k - but we averaged 4:20ks and the last k was probably 3:40... Chris would not have been happy.

In future I will stick to the fast group :)
