Orienteering race (Stirling RtC) 1:00:50 [5] 7.5 km (8:07 / km) +320m 6:41 / km
(injured)

Actuals: 12k, 315m climb

Much clearer map (1:4k), really good fun around the castle; one of the best urbans I've done.

Deliberately slow and steady round the castle and only messed up 1/7th of the controls - thought I was being clever by not going through the tunnel to 3, but actually ended up in the dead end. In illustrious company though - many of the top elites did this too! 45s lost.

Bad route choice to 11, c.30s

Even worse route choice to 12 (see RG [when I get around to it]); caused by too much prep; wouldn't have noticed the steps I used if Paul hadn't commented on them earlier - unfortunely not appropriate for this leg!

Route choice 20-21 still not sure which was better, decided to go whichever way the guy in the Scotland top just ahead of me went (N)

Pleased with S choice to 27 up hill - caught Scotland up again here

Terrible route choice to 29, probably 1 min, Scotland caught back up the minute I'd gained when he went to the wrong side of 28

Rest ok

So for a race so aparantly strewn with errors, actually went really well, enjoyed it, was running ok, still not up to pre-injury levels but getting better. Need to find some shoes with low heel drop but more mid-foot cushioning...any ideas?

Would have been nice to have a big of leg-overlap when turning the map over.

Orienteering race (Edinburgh city race) 47:01 [5] 6.2 km (7:35 / km) +180m 6:37 / km
(injured)

Actuals: 9k, 220m climb

Reasonable run

Map not that clear at 1:5k, would have been better at 1:4k. Some very small gaps/steps hard to see at 1:5k

Main error 3-4; spent time working out best route and then failed to implement it correctly; thought I'd gone up enough sets of steps but actually one set short. Time loss c.2mins. Concentrate!

On a couple of legs (5,9) took the complicated rather than the easy route when they were very close in time taken but this meant there was less concentration available for detailed navigation in circle/planning - I was trying to avoid this and to take the simple routes, so failed a bit here

Missed the round rather than up and over route choice due to folding it off the edge of the map - must stop doing this!

Otherwise pretty good; although quite slow up the steps

Walking (Holyrood park) 1:45:00 [3] 8.17 km (12:51 / km) +383m 10:25 / km
(injured)

Nice walk up into Holyrood park to Arthur's seat - would be nice to live in Edniburgh and have this on your doorstep!

Orienteering race (Edinburgh night sprint) 19:57 [5] 2.1 km (9:30 / km)
(injured)

Really good sprint race; far more technical than I thought it would be.

Made some pretty poor route choices, but so did every one else! There was a lot of stopping and head-scratching.

Think most of the top elites were just jogging round due to the WREs tomorrow.

I hope this ends up on routegadget!

Note that I beat Tue Lassen, who won bronze at the world sprint orienteering champs, by 7 seconds. Pretty sure he was really going for it...

Swimming 40:00 [3] 1.75 km (2.6 kph)
(injured)

Excitingly, wrote an app for the Suunto to divide the distance by 25 and tell me that instead, so it just shows number of lengths.

Obviously loads of other people had already done this, but I like writing code!

Felt a bit tough on the inner thigh muscles (I have no idea what that's called), must be careful not to do another injury! Perhaps going from not swimming for c.10 years to twice a week might be a bit much.
