Running - Trail (MaccH A Group) 1:18:56 [3] 14.3 km (5:31 / km) +362m 4:54 / km
ahr:143 max:163 shoes: Peregrine 11 ST

Freezing fingers brrrr...run from Tesco, just the three of us and only four in the slower group - maybe some didn't get the Tesco memo?

Nice trail loop to White Nancy, pretty brisk to keep us warm. Not feeling as sprightly as the last few days.

Running - Trail (Kerridge) 36:59 [3] 6.61 km (5:36 / km) +236m 4:45 / km
ahr:150 max:167 shoes: Peregrine 11 ST

Forecast drizzle hasn't materialised yet so had a brief jaunt. Much colder (ls,gloves) but quite nice actually.

Near-suicidal segment attempt down the steps still only good enough for third - I don't think there's another 4s out there without going up with loppers and chopping some inconvenient branches off.

Running - Trail (Kerridge) 37:16 [3] 6.74 km (5:32 / km) +237m 4:42 / km

Getting out in the sunshine before the weather goes all rubbish again.

Feeling good today.

Running - Trail (Tegg's Nose) 1:33:34 [3] 14.04 km (6:40 / km) +532m 5:36 / km
ahr:137 max:159 shoes: Pegasus 36 Trail

No-one from my normal group turned up this first week, so I stole some from Emma's group to go faster.
Bit of looping back to get some extra climb but mainly a recovery run. Lovely evening; enjoying it before it gets all cold again.

Running - Trail long (Buttermere recce) 4:50:16 [3] 26.04 km (11:09 / km) +1995m 8:04 / km
ahr:119 max:174 shoes: S/LAB Ultra 3

I couldn't temp anyone to do a longer run with me at a reasonable pace so I went out on my own - really glad I did this since group that stayed together had massive amounts of faffing and stopping and ended up splitting up.

Decided on the Buttermere race route in reverse, starting from Buttermere. Went up through Ghyll Wood as saw that Beth Pascall (I think) did this on her Tea Round record, and I've never done it. I think it's marginally shorter and marginally less road, although does involve an additional stile. Probably not a lot in it, but it's a nice wood.

Missed the line at the top of Whiteless Edge to the Grasmoor col, but don't think I'd do that in reverse. Line off Grassmoor down the northern spur, crossing river where a handy trod leaves it, is fine. Standard to Whiteside but I don't think I've been down it before - not a nice descent; loads of loose small rocks.

My heel blister had managed to reinflate and so every step was pretty painful going downhill - but wasn't going to let that stop a bluebird day so put up with it. Also, there was noone to moan to.

Came up Mellbreak the way I came down during the race: the straight way rather than contouring. The group came down the diagonal but reckoned straight was faster. So what I did in the race was probably fine although I didn't realise it at the time. The left turn to the decent is just before a small lump of rock - in the race I cut the corner but I think staying on the path might be faster since the terrain is pretty rough and you have to cross a couple of streams if you cut.

Decided I had time for an extra mountain and went up Red Pike via a trod I hoped existed across to Scale Beck (spoiler: nope, at least not where I looked).
Heatmaps implies I was much too high, and if it's possible to cut somewhere it would be at the bottom of the trod that comes down from near the end of the Lingcomb Edge spur (rather than the race route path). I think this is worth trying in the race.

Route up to Red Pike I've not taken before, and then down the standard way up from Buttermere. I had fancied trying the High Stile gully that looks like a potential Tea Round shortcut/death sentence (tbc) but I couldn't face another descent on my heel. Next time.

Great weekend. Feeling a bit more positive about upcoming long stuff after these two days.

Running - Trail race (Coledale Horseshoe ) 1:29:03 [5] 13.74 km (6:29 / km) +1098m 4:38 / km
ahr:152 max:164 shoes: Adidas Speed Pro SG (10.5)

https://racebest.com/results/9ck6a

Probably would have been my best fell race result if I hadn't got lost :'(

Still a good result for me to beat Allen, Nathanael and Jake.

Sprint out of the field was slower than I thought and I had to actively slow down to avoid being at the front which wasn't the intention; just not to be so far down that I got stuck in a queue! Once on the downhill though loads passed me incl N and A in the village. Got back past N on the steps and then A a quarter of the way up the climb. Ran most of it other than the really steep bits and came out just ahead of A at Grisedale. He floated past down to the first col, and Nic passed me just before Eel Crag ascent.

With A for the ascent and then he blizted the technical descents on the ridge to Sail and got a bit of a gap. But I closed it back on the grassy sail descent and passed him and the first lady once we reached the easy track at the bottom of the singletrack. But then I couldn't see anyone ahead...
I thought about getting the map out but decided I'd been there multiple times before and so didn't need it.

I was 1 min down on Nic just before Stile End, which I was very happy with, but unforts just out of sight.

Lost 2:45 doing an extra 40m of ascent up to Stile End. Allen followed me and so did the first lady (sorry about that). I went a way down the ridge before I realised and corrected, so my 1 min lead on Allen was gone. So he lost 1:45, and Nathanael caught us both by going the right way.

Put in a massive effort up Barrow and then on the descent as I was terrified of A catching me (I hadn't seen N) but it paid off as I finished 36s and 49s ahead of them respectively.

Would have been 1:26 and 21st rather than 29th, so really annoyed with myself for not pulling the map out! Definitely a race for next year.

Still finished first MaccH which I'm very happy with, and shows I have some semblance of fitness coming into race season, which is good.

Massive bottom-of-heel blister I think I can blame on these shoes not having insoles, so will try and see if I have some I can use from another pair.

Walking (Maiden Moor) 2:32:51 [3] 9.98 km (15:19 / km) +657m 11:32 / km
ahr:92 max:139

Decided to go get another Wainwright from the B&B as it was mentally busy everywhere and we thought parking somewhere else might be a pain. So up to Maiden Moor via Catbells, since I've not done MM before as the summit is a bit off the path and it's never been a CP in a race.
There is nothing marking it at all, had to use GPS to check it was actually the right place.
Lovely day for it and good to keep moving after the race this morning.

Walking (High Rigg) 1:30:22 [3] 7.01 km (12:54 / km) +274m 10:47 / km
ahr:91 max:128 shoes: S/LAB Ultra 2

Arrived early in the Lakes so quick Wainwright before it went dark. High Rigg was a good contender despite it not being quite clear on the OS where it was, not being the highest point; also there is a prominent unnamed mound next to Low Rigg which is higher than it.
But altogether it was pretty nice up there, and totally deserted.

Found this surprisingly difficult, not feeling amazing and we weren't running that fast. Good to get out though, and good chat with just 3 of us.

Running - Trail (Kerridge) 35:40 [3] 6.6 km (5:24 / km) +236m 4:35 / km
ahr:141 max:154 shoes: Peregrine 11 ST

Brief lunch run. Feeling ok although didn't sleep that well.

PR'd the downhill through the woods seg by cutting a new corner - it's defo winnable with the right shoes and no inconvenient other people.
6 PM

Running - Trail (BollyH Trail) 1:40:22 [3] 14.39 km (6:58 / km) +428m 6:04 / km
ahr:126 max:151 shoes: Peregrine 11 ST

The Bollington harriers trail group is ludicrously sedate (even this 'longer option') but good fun anyway and always interesting to chat to different people for a change.
Interview 4-5pm so needed to get out the house again! Felt better for it. And lovely evening again. Felt good on the hills - although at that pace I would've worried if I didn't.

Note
(rest day)

Feeling a bit ropey tbh; had a sore throat for a few days. Seems to be one minor illness after another at the moment.

Had a lemsip.

Running - Road/Track (Langley 7 race route) 1:03:35 [3] 13.72 km (4:38 / km) +243m 4:15 / km
ahr:149 max:164 shoes: Nike Pegasus 37

Wasn't meant to be super fast but it was only Richard and at a fastish pace, and we pushed each other a bit on the climb.
Took the downhill steady though; most of the run apart from the steep bit was at the speed of chat.
Nice route and good weather.

Looking forward to clock change though :)

ahr:132 max:158 shoes: Mudclaw 275 (red)

http://www.derwentvalleyorienteers.org.uk/results/...

I think this went well. Won a couple of legs, but can't match the top guys for consistency. Please with my performance though - one bad exit direction caused by wanting to look good in front of the tourists (which was successful in that I spiked the control and flowed through nicely, but rubbish nav-wise as I left in totally the wrong direction and had to climb two extra fences). A couple of in-circle errors but much cleaner than I would have been in the past on this type of terrain; minimised time loss well.

Great area with a good mix of heather, contours and low-vis trees which tests pretty much everything.

Running - Trail (Tryfan & PB Leg 2) 5:29:02 [3] 24.54 km (13:24 / km) +1823m 9:47 / km
ahr:114 max:153 shoes: S/LAB Ultra 3

With N and Joe. Forecast was to be 50mph plus gusts and that's exactly what we got! Apart from that, beautiful day.

Some scrambling up Tryfan North Ridge which was okay, nothing as bad as Crib Goch. I avoided as much as possible!
Then down via the corner-cut I thought looked possible on satellite view, to come out nearer the E end of the lake. It was a steeper, scree-y way down, so not fast, but cuts a bit corner if you're going E of the lake anyway. So worth doing.

Up Pen Yr Ole Wen from the E. Significantly nicer than from the West. Will compare times later, but barring it being quite a bit slower, would definitely go that way because it's much easier on the body. Only a couple of scrambly sections and no loose rock like the other way.

Rest of leg pretty standard; happy with choices. Nearly blew away on the Carnedd Llewellyn ridge though - might have been the strongest wind I've ever been in, defo top 3. There were times I had to pretty much lie down and hold onto the ground for a few seconds to avoid being carried over the edge; maybe 80mph or something. It was scary actually - we looked at a map to see if there was an alternative way down - but there wasn't really so we carried on. And soon after it eased off again anyway, but it was a pretty brutal 20 mins.

Quads complaining a bit on the final ascent; remembering what a proper mountain day feels like. I don't think there's been too much regression, though. It did remind me of what a big undertaking the Paddy Buckley is though, and 8 weeks away suddenly seems a bit soon.

Brisk! Fastest time ever up Coalpit lane. Felt tough but not crazily so.
Nice evening. Looking forward to it being light in the evenings in a couple of weeks. We had 5 tonight though which was pretty good.

Too foggy for the fell run (imho) so just a jaunt round the roads.

Just Richard and me. Felt tough for the pace. Watch told me I'm not in great shape.
Nice evening though.

ahr:129 max:154 shoes: Roclite G275

Surprised this was only 10 mins faster than when I did it last January in the snow!
It was pretty windy today but other than that, conditions perfect. Great views.

Saw a couple having wedding photos taken near mam tor, holding some kind of colourful smoke bombs.

Skiing (Les arcs) 2:00:00 [3] 50.0 km (25.0 kph) +6000m
(sick)

Expected today to be very brief so didn't log it, but actually started to feel a bit better, especially by the afternoon, and managed to complete the set of all the blacks in the resort.
Nothing is challenging anymore really now I'm a hardcore offpiste skier, though.
Saying that, although my mogul technique has improved a lot this week, still leaves a lot to be desired.

Thursday Mar 10, 2022 #

Note
(sick)

Caught something from Emma which has wiped me out for the day.

Bit annoying it's the day I'd booked to do the 80mph headfirst zipline, but you can't have everything. Em enjoyed it.

9 AM

Skiing 2:09:43 [3] 51.03 km (23.6 kph) +6552m
ahr:84 max:135 (sick)

Easier day staying local so could meet Em for some skiing later on.
Came 2nd twice on ski cross - Neil is quicker than me. I reckon id win a moguls race, though.
5 PM

Running - Road/Track 30:00 [3] 5.14 km (5:50 / km) +157m 5:04 / km
ahr:146 max:164 (sick)

Nice loop up and around a lake, with some extras on the way back to take me above 30 mins.

9 AM

Skiing (Les Arcs ) 2:56:35 [3] 74.11 km (25.2 kph) +10697m
ahr:87 max:129 (sick)

Most skiing in a day?
Good fun. Very much missing off piste, though.

My cold is getting better though; could nearly breathe last night.

8 AM

Skiing (Les Arcs ) 3:06:12 [3] 69.64 km (22.4 kph) +9795m
ahr:79 max:112 (sick)

High volume, low difficulty (mainly).
Some crucial home-getting blacks closed on the la Plagne side made it longer and easier than planned.
Last hour with Em who's improving pretty fast :)

Sunday Mar 6, 2022 #

7 AM

Skiing (Les Arcs ) 2:30:12 [3] 56.36 km (22.5 kph) +8331m
ahr:82 max:120 (sick)

Off piste is poor but piste is good, so good distance and vert. Lots of moguls!

Friday Mar 4, 2022 #

Running - Trail (Sponds loop) 1:10:42 [3] 12.09 km (5:51 / km) +418m 4:59 / km
ahr:144 max:162 (sick) shoes: Xtalon 212 (navy/orange)

Was meant to be longer but still feeling under the weather so cut it short.

Actually feeling ok again by the end. Due to the 2 days off, legs feel good.

Thursday Mar 3, 2022 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Still a bit poorly :(
Just a cold really but don't want to make anything worse before holiday on Saturday (because Em would be cross).

Has an interview today which I think went pretty well.

Wednesday Mar 2, 2022 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

A bit ill. Sore throat, weird trapped back of throat mucus (or something) so didn't get much sleep.

Actually as at 4pm don't feel too bad, but discretion/valour etc.
