Running - Trail race (Bowstones) 47:32 [5] 10.74 km (4:26 / km) +338m 3:50 / km

15th/416
https://crazylegsevents.co.uk/results

Thought this went well so disappointed to be 45s slower than the last time I did it.
Looking at the splits, faster on the first quarter but slower on the second, to be 10s ish behind at the Bowstones. Then 15s down through the woods and 15s on the remainder.
It was significantly muddier this time, which is my excuse. Felt very out of breath on the climbs, legs fine though.

Over the stile since there was no queue. Last time there was a queue of 1, and I went through the dog hole and came out together with the stile guy. So it's pretty similar either way.

Enjoyed it, and good turnout of MaccH.

Note
(rest day)

Meant to get out, but it was raining. And I'm racing tomorrow, and it would be nice to be faster than last time...

Fairly relaxed pace, very muddy. Just the 3 of us. Very mild again.

Orienteering - Urban race (York University) 37:58 [5] 8.21 km (4:37 / km) +62m 4:27 / km
ahr:144 max:162 shoes: Pegasus Trail 3

Good area, not as good use of it made this time I didn't think. 3rd behind Jack and Ben Stevens. Not quite enough ranking points to make it into my top 6 and so I'm still tantalisingly close to (re)breaking into the top 100, at 102nd.

This was my last event as an M21 :(

Fairly poor start missing a gap and then ending up the wrong side of some olive, and then failed to include road crossing requirement in planning the next leg. From there though, pretty good. I think missed the best route on 7, possibly anchored by going the way I'd come into 6. Didn't do much else wrong I don't think - Jack and BS both running a bit faster (Jack a lot faster, plus a 60s mistake). Not a lot of 50/50 route choice going on; I imagine that the best route was taken by most people in most cases, so running speed was pretty important today.

ahr:133 max:152 shoes: Peregrine 11 ST

The o wasn't a massive run so since the rain had stopped we got out for a little jog before nightfall.
Foggy on the ridge and pretty muddy everywhere, but surprisingly warm. Busy with walkers. Nice to get out with Jack before he goes back to Norway again.

Running - Trail race (Adlington Winter Warmer) 55:16 [5] 10.48 km (5:16 / km) +44m 5:10 / km
ahr:138 max:191 shoes: Pegasus Trail 3

Edit: 40:26, so 34 seconds off. 32nd place. The winner was bang on, which is pretty impressive. Although if you ask 182 people to predict their times, maybe it's likely that someone will get it right?

-----

Naked race - watch in back pocket. Interesting to note that my arse has a significantly higher HR than my wrist.

My original estimate was 38:30 but after looking at the route (plentiful corners) and the conditions (muddy) and the distance (10.5k) I amended it to 41:00.

Minimal ascent, mainly uninteresting canal and MWW. Winning for the first few hundred metres and then settled into 5th. 5th for all of it until about 300m left where I finally caught up and passed 4th.

I think I probably wasn't far off 41, but not close enough to win a prize! The shoes were as expected - only marginally more grip than road shoes, but acceptable for flat mild mud, and as comfy as road shoes.

Running - Trail race (Two Turtle Doves) 39:41 [5] 8.54 km (4:39 / km) +319m 3:55 / km
ahr:148 max:161 shoes: XTalon G210 (blue)

30s slower than 2018, which was foot spike year...but - it was significantly wet, slippery and snowy this year, and also I got lost a bit. Also felt a bit ill the last few days. And I got PRs on the uphill segments anyway.

Ok that's the excuses out the way. 9th
https://www.webscorer.com/racedetails?raceid=26366...

Raining pretty much up to the start, not windy but everything saturated. Very muddy everywhere, fine until leaving the main path after the forest and then the snow and the fog meant everything went white. Very wet snow meant concentration was required on each footstep. Ended up following someone for 20s who got to a junction, stopped and said 'oh, the footprints I've been following have disappeared'. So we cut across the moor a bit to get back to where we thought the path must be. Not sure how long this was really but up to a minute total time loss? Maybe. Regardless we only lost one place, and I regained it once the track became downhill. The track previously had puddles where this year it was mainly underwater. Took the technical bit very cautiously (probably too much) but then had a lot left for the downhill road and took another place. 8th was a way ahead but might've been close without the mistake.

Glad I got out, but need lemsip and a nap now.

ahr:143 max:161 shoes: Pegasus 36 Trail

Wet and windy. Need more aggressive trail shoes if doing this in winter again!
Still like the course, both the hills are attackable due to being so short.
Disappointed with being slower than last time, but that was good conditions. Also felt a bit ill today :(

But it's not Covid; I did a test. My arm is a bit swollen from the booster, tho.

ahr:133 max:164 shoes: Mudclaw 275 (blk)

No-one was free today so I went for a jaunt around Winnats Pass - have wanted to explore a bit for a while and no time like the present.

It's steep and the grass was damp so was a bit sketchy at times, but not undoable by any means. The old mudclaws (411 miles in) were struggling a bit, but I never fell over.

Down a couple of the gullys, and also the line E from Mam Tor, would make for some great skiing. Next time there's a foot of snow, I'm getting out there.

Note

Boostered. Got Moderna this time after my double Pfizer before.

The leaflet refers to the Moderna vaccine as 'Spikevax' which probably refers to the spike shaped protein it targets, but for me just conjures up images of a really pointy needle.

Smashed it.

ahr:142 max:161 shoes: Nike Pegasus 37

Easy, plus one hill effort for the KOM. Only 11 people ever have bothered (not much of a hill, and a dead end). But still.

A better segment would be the steps I took to get back down again.

Trail shoes because I thought it wouldn't be damp, bit it was raining the whole time. Very nearly didn't get out of the car as I don't much like the cold and wet. But I'm glad I did since after the first 10 mins or so it wasn't so bad.

Orienteering - Urban race (Lymm NSL) 1:14:22 [5] 15.17 km (4:54 / km) +89m 4:46 / km
ahr:138 max:154 shoes: Nike Pegasus 37

Peter's first time planning an NSL despite never having competed in one. So no dots in the centre of the control circles, and no ensuring there's only one LP or whatever on the circle. Also unadjusted map directly from OOMap. A combination of these meant there was quite a lot of confusion from everyone and lots of checking multiple adjacent features to see which one had the number of digits which fitted the clue.

Despite all that I think I did ok. Couple of nav errors which were nothing to do with any of that and were all me; mainly not looking in sufficient detail or just losing concentration. Fine after the first 10 mins or so so maybe I was just cold.

Missed a whole corner of the map but got 7 of the 10 sixties which seemed ok.

Went for Turkish afterwards which was nice but rather too plentiful.

ahr:145 max:163 shoes: Nike Pegasus 38

Trying out new shoes and new headtorch (petzl iko) out in one run. Torch is averagely bright but super lightweight, should be perfect for night street league and road runs. Shoes are pretty similar to the 37, ie not as good as the 36 imo.

Feeling good at the start of this but really tired by the end.

ahr:144 max:159 shoes: Xtalon 212 (navy/orange)

Won the brown :) I think this is my most-visited o area, though. A few minor mistakes caused by lack of pre-planning and getting stuck in some brambles, but it was very much a runner's course which suited me.

Not done many forest events this year so was a nice change, but after 2 days of spectacular inversions, a damp misty forest was a bit of a come down tbh. The ladz got more gloriousness at Kinder today.

Running - Road/Track race (Preston Parkrun) 18:45 [5] 4.89 km (3:50 / km) +48m 3:39 / km
ahr:141 max:153 shoes: Nike Pegasus 37

Nice course, 3 laps of tarmac, with a steep (very short) hill and then mostly flat with a bit more extended downhill. Hard to get pace back after the (probably only 20s) climb. Did enough for 4th with Allen in 3rd 45s ahead.
11 AM

Running - Trail (Jack's Rake & Wainwrights) 3:51:17 [3] 15.69 km (14:44 / km) +1242m 10:34 / km
ahr:114 max:143 shoes: Mudclaw 275 (blk)

Decided yesterday wasn't sufficiently terrifying and did Jack's Rake. Nice way up via Pike Howe rather than the stream path. Then the Rake was damp, which reduced foot and handholds to only the flat ones. One section I took the gully route and it was impossible in the conditions, and I had to downclimb a section I couldn't see with Allen spotting me, and we had to take the more exposed route up the edge. Then near the top the actual 'path' disappeared somewhat and we were just climbing up bits of rock hoping that they'd come out at the top. It was exhilarating but very tense. The adrenaline nearly gave me a heart attack.

Rest of the run just went to get a few Wainwrights - Sergeant's Crag and Eagle Crag, then back via Codale Head (not a WW) and down to the Tarn due South (lovely) then from Stickle via Tarn Crag (also not a WW) avoiding the stream path again, more loveliness.

An awesome day.

ahr:124 max:157 shoes: Roclite G275

Have done Crib Goch before but not Y Lliwedd. The former was terrifying as usual and I'm not sure why I keep putting myself through it. The inversions were truly spectacular though. However my tolerance to exposure doesn't seem to be increasing despite repetition!

Best bit of the day was coming down from the latter ridge to Cwm Dyli ignoring the path and going straight line.

Great day out with the ladz. Siabod cafe for Welsh Rarebit afterwards - they also served Austrian Rarebit but I neglected to ask what that was and Google doesn't know. It was a couple of pounds more expensive so I assume it had meat in it, sausage maybe? Next time.

ahr:148 max:173 shoes: Pegasus 36 (Blue)

Pretty good attempt but spend too long in the hilly bit at the start and not enough on the flat bit later. Saying that, only 70ish points short of the win and the 3:40 I had left over was easily enough to get quite a bit more than that. I think I'm two 1sts and two 2nds from the series so far though, which is better than I've ever been doing before.

Orienteering - Urban race (Bollington Xmas Street O) 58:40 [5] 12.95 km (4:32 / km) +210m 4:12 / km
ahr:158 max:175 shoes: Nike Pegasus 37

MaccH Street O around Bollington. Retained my trophy for the 4th year in a row :)

Interesting spread of the 24 controls, 15 in Bollington and 9 miles away. I decided that 15 wouldn't be enough to win and took the gamble for miles away. Actually 15 would have been enough to win since 4 people got 14 all for joint second...

I got 6 of the 9 and 11 of the Bolly ones for 17. Emma got a bit ambitious and came back super late for the only negative score, but it was a noble effort.

Been feeling pretty rubbish the last couple of days but felt okay once I got out there, so glad I did.

ahr:150 max:175 shoes: Mudclaw 275 (blk)

Really pleased with this, I think it's a bit longer (although maybe a bit less ascent) than the previous course, so pleased to be 8 mins faster than the only other time I've done it.

Started with Allen and kept him in sight up Shuts, but he destroyed me on the downhill. Took my new line which felt quite fast but not sure if it's better; need to compare. What definitely isn't better is going wide up Cumberland, lost about a minute doing that. A few seconds at Tegg's forgetting I needed to go through the gate to get to the corner cut, but otherwise fine. Overtook people right the way to the line, but still only 13th handicap (3rd scratch, although 4th really since N started late).

Really pleased with my speed after 2 weeks off running, acclimatisation to 2100m might have something to do with it.

Note
(rest day)

Journey back much less stressful than the way out.

Skiing numbers approximates because I didn't take my Garmin charger and logging skiing is a bit of a pain anyway.

Awesome couple of weeks. I am now shit hot on avalanches (American avalanche association level 1) and got graded expert for both on-piste and off-piste skiing - and an A for repping/mountaincraft. Basically means I should get to go on some free holidays in exchange for a bit of admin/leading people around the mountain. Good deal I reckon.

Now back to real life for a bit as I have a first aid course to do at the end of Jan before I can go skiing again.
