Running - Road/Track (Easy loop) 34:16 [3] 7.01 km (4:53 / km) +103m 4:33 / km
ahr:136 max:154 shoes: Pegasus 35 (white)

R hs still a bit tight. Longer run tomorrow I reckon.

Running - Trail (Tegg's Loop) 1:48:18 [3] 19.15 km (5:39 / km) +747m 4:44 / km
ahr:143 max:164 shoes: Hoka Mafete 2

Snowing this morning so wore 3/4s and two layers and gloves...far too hot.

Nice day for running. Saw zero people. Tried hard on 5 segments, got one of them. One turned out not to exist at all, and another wasn't where I thought it was.

More running from home needed.

Luckily.

Note
(rest day)

Went for a walk with Em and her son. Nice day, bit chilly.

She made me American pancakes with banana and blueberries for breakfast, and bacon, brie and onion chutney tiger bread sandwiches for lunch. Plus aubergine parmigiana last night. Think she's a keeper.

Running - Trail long (Cracken Edge & Eccles Pik) 4:36:42 [4] 39.2 km (7:04 / km) +1706m 5:48 / km
ahr:139 max:165 shoes: Hoka Mafete 2

Nice morning. Staying local now that's been clarified, unfortunately.

Didn't realise it was possible to get to either Eccles Pike or Cracken Edge from home, but managed to put a nice loop together. Only went wrong when I went past a man who glared at me and didn't want to retrace my steps and go back past him again, so did a bit of trespass.

Felt a long way! Expected between 4 and 5 though, so that was a good call. Some lovely views. Saw about 5 people total.

ahr:139 max:164 shoes: Xtalon 212 (blk/red)

Julie's second challenge started a 40 min run from home, but better than driving...
2 CRs and 4 more segments in the top 10 shows my fitness is doing airtight despite constantly eating Maltesers.

ahr:129 max:155 shoes: Xtalon 212 (blk/red)

Julie's challenge #1 - from village green to Kerridge trig. Tried really really hard and time still smashed by N.

Running - Trail (Jog back down) 24:20 [3] 4.65 km (5:14 / km) +57m 4:56 / km

ahr:142 max:158 shoes: Pegasus 35 (white)

5.15km to Em's house; hoping I can shave off 150m with marginally better route selection.
Because that's the kind of thing I care about in a post-virus world.

Did loads of hf and hs stretches and felt ok for most of the run.

Running - Trail (Groovy Kinder Love recce) 2:44:17 [3] 20.54 km (8:00 / km) +1003m 6:26 / km
ahr:122 max:151 shoes: Mudclaw 275 (blk)

Just the first half. Think I'm a bit tired from yesterday's double.

As per the race up to the cabin and then Mill Hill up the trod. Wasn't sure where to turn left - but would be in the race, since there'd be a CP. Fairly straight to Harry Hut. It's quite a way along the slabs; I thought I'd left it too late and went off piste, but it looks like has I gone just a little bit further there'd have been a nice trod. From HH, tried to do what I failed to do in the race and drop down the spur to the path. Failed again - but this time I know why - there is no path. Stupid OS. So looks like the correct route is to do what most did in the race - back SE for a bit to go around the reentrant, and then down the grouse butts.

Going back to just W of the shooting cabin seems like a good way up to Mill Hill. There is a trod a lot of the way, it's still uphill but slightly less soul destroying than the first line of butts with no trod.

Bit disappointing that I couldn't face the second half of the route. Feeling a bit dispirited in general.

Running - Trail (TH5) 1:04:51 [3] 8.44 km (7:41 / km) +546m 5:48 / km
ahr:134 max:165 shoes: Hoka Mafete 2

Terry's High 5 route with Em. Lovely weather, really windy though!
3 PM

Running - Trail (Chrome Hill (+extra loop)) 1:51:52 [3] 14.44 km (7:45 / km) +806m 6:03 / km
ahr:133 max:156 shoes: Hoka Mafete 2

Thought it would be fun to do the Chrome Hill race route, as missed the race last year as it clashed with another race.
N wanted a bit more distance so we did an extra loop almost the same length as the race. Some trespass.

Race route is lovely - defo worth doing. Some amazing views and inspiring landscapes. Some single tracks at the beginning though, so would be very worthwhile sprinting the first few hundred metres on the road.

Easy loop. Top of L arm aches, as it did yday. Maybe something legacy from last week's ultra? Or I've been sleeping funny.
Right hs still really tight so did some stretches and stuff.

20th

Toss up between this and Ras Yr Aran but this fills up every year so thought I'd find out why. Conclusion: not sure.

Still feeling r hs/hf from green man last Sat, but assumed it could probably be fine.

Worst possible start; lined up on the front row and was faffing with removing coat and tying shoes etc, had just taken map out of pocket and someone miles away said go (apparently). Turns out the race was going the other way and I'd been literally on the back row. Sigh. So first few hundred meters was a sprint trying to get past everyone! Needed have tried so hard, it was wide for ages. Took about 2 mins to get to N, then we ran the first 4k or so together, in sight/with the lead group, until they disappeared going over the moor towards the res. Took the first dam just like everyone else did, although staying on the PW looks shorter to me! Chatting to a guy for about 10k who ended up finishing 10 mins ahead of me. He left me somewhere between 1 and 2. Cp grid reference given for 2 slightly incorrect, but no problem. Overtaken by a group of 6ish just before 3 which was dispiriting. Took farm track to 4 rather than footpath, felt bad since this was specifically forbidden - but everyone else was too. The fp was on the Lancashireman and it's really bad. Slightly lost losing a min or so at Stiperden thinking the path was through three farm whereas it's just after. Then up through Bank Top it didn't exist. But then fine after that and relatively straightforward and downhill ish all the way to Todmorden. Woman overtook me, offered me jelly beans and showed me a secret way down to the road, so that was nice. Passed by a few more, though. Steep field to 5 and then big climb to the monument, but over relatively fast. Then easy down, and then staying on the E PW branch seemed faster (which I did). Hill down to Hebden Bridge steep downhill tarmac was grim. Tarmac hill to heptonstall grim. Downhill nice to 8, then uphill for ages on track - grim - before down and up again - more grim. Then long down on a track before some more road uphill, before a nice jaunt through Penistone hill and descent into the finish (left after church, straight on, right down steps, cross road, finish literally in building).

Felt like a very long way, with loads of climb. Just kept going on. Under 5 achievable but probably won't bother unless it doesn't clash with anything! The 4 toenails I lost last week defo slowed progress, and the aches etc, but probably not enough to make up the +15 mins on N (6th).

Edale cancelled next week so unsure what's next atm.

ahr:137 max:168 shoes: Pegasus 36 (Blue)

Em's first time street orienteering. She was pretty good, but it helped that she lived 5 mins away. Will be interesting to see how she gets on in a new area. And without me there holding her hand. Metaphorically.

Groups joined since torrential rain. Right hs sore but not too bad considering.
Three quarter length waterproofs worked like a charm.

Note

Legs somewhat destroyed. Drove home and stopped at Tesco for croissant, Tiger bread, hummus, falafel wraps, Indian inspired sandwiches and two types of chocolate.

For breakfast.

I love running.

2nd!
https://my.raceresult.com/150381/results?lang=en

Bit nervous about this since not done any long runs for ages. But decided to start strongly and see what happened. So stayed at the front for a few miles and then pretty near the front - but didn't push too hard uphill to Dundry and dropped back into 6th. Running with Jane, and could see a group of 4 ahead of us, 100m or so but running at the same speed, so using them for nav along with the gpx. The guy at the front had disappeared into the distance.

So through CP1 in about 6th, catching the group in the process so then 2-7ish were all together for the next few miles. At this point my watch crashed and stopped knowing where I was...but I assumed it would sort itself out eventually. Ran tighter until a mildly steep downhill stony path which lots of them couldn't handle. Then there were three of us - stayed together until CP2, and then they stopped but I didn't so was into clear 2nd.

Built up a bit of a lead despite not knowing how to get into the cycle path - watch still dead so having to use the map - and probably a few mins ahead by Warmley. Great to see Phil at the road crossing for some support!! Thanks for coming out. Proceeded to miss a right turn and get a bit lost, I knew something had happened but wasn't sure what. Wandered for a bit and found a CFP sign so knew I was back on the right path...only proceeded to find 3rd place running toward me...turns out I was on the right path but the wrong direction! So there was my few minutes gone.

Stayed with 3rd chatting until about the landfill site (halfway, ish) when he said the pace was a bit fast and I should keep going. I said I'd see him again when I next got lost...
(Someone had written in the floor 'May the trees guide you my tiny acorns GMU 2020' on the ground in chalk which made my day.)

Alone now and vaguely remembering bits of the course from the recces 5 years ago. CP3 and saw Phil again, still feeling not too bad. Didn't stop. Through Bradley Stoke past my old house and stopped to swap my water bottles with full ones Marth had left out for me, 30s or so. Made up the route through this bit (more or less right).

Starting to really feel it after 50k or so. Legs aching all over the place, hamstrings mainly. Pace slowed but kept it going to Phil again at Blaise and CP4. No stopping again! Slight detour around the golf course as wasn't sure how to get back in after the path closed section. But otherwise no nav worries and kept it going all the way up to the downs and across, over the suspension bridge and to the Green man himself at Ashton Court. Finally let myself look round and realise 2nd was secure, and so enjoyed the last downhill into the finish.

Very proud of myself! Great to see everyone, got a nice trophy, and proved that reliance on technology is no substitute for knowing how to read a map! A non-orienteer would not have dealt with that situation competently. Yes, I'm smug about this.

5 clif bars, 1 pack of bloks, 2 litres of electrolytes. Worked well.

Running - Trail race (Cloud 9) 1:06:18 [5] 14.49 km (4:35 / km) +355m 4:05 / km
ahr:148 max:164 shoes: Mudclaw 275 (blk)

14th/268. Simon Bailey over 3 mins clear; 2nd was just over 1:01 (5 mins ahead of me).

Pleased with this given tiredness from skiing! This race clashed with rescheduled long mynd valleys which was a shame, because I needed the extra 90 mins sleep. This race definitely worse than that one, though. Although this did have a great section ascending to and then descending from the Cloud - rest largely gravelly cycle path and waterlogged fields.

Soup afterwards particularly poor (red water) but cake stall was good value with 4-layer homemade Biscoff cake for £1.

Did loads of stretching beforehand so R HS was okay for the race, but definite niggle unforts.
