Orienteering - Forest race (S6D Day 2 Balfour) 1:30:45 [5] 11.45 km (7:56 / km) +368m 6:50 / km
shoes: X-Talon 225 (July 2017)

RG: http://www.scottish6days.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#41...

(also RG done for Day1)

Better run than yesterday I think; no massive mistakes. But it was easier. Small miss on #3; should have aimed off. Then pretty dodgy navigation to #6 expecting to come out on one ride but actually drawn down the slope and came out on a parallel one miles away; luckily overall route was still not too bad. Lost at least 60s on #7 thinking I was standing on the spur and being right but a bit too low down. Standing next to the wrong boulder. With hindsight, this should have been obvious.

Mistook E hill for W hill on long leg to #10 but luckily there was an obvious relocation feature. Someone with a Lagganlia 2011 (?) top was in the process of catching me here (ie, followed me all the way) which put a bit of pressure on, although I think I'd have still made the same mistake.

#11-12 missed the obvious ride and went cross country, thought I'd come out on the wall much further NW than I had, but relocated on the strip of open really near to the control...basically lucky here.

Not impressed with the map near #15 as it was in a massive hole (where I was expecting a hill, so that was all me) but it was in some dense trees which I think are mapped as a veg boundary but it just looks like rocks it's so curved... I think this should just have been mapped with a shade of green. ISOM2017 should sort this out!

Rest ok. Worse position than yday but closer to the winner - everyone will have found today easier.

Tbh 2 days in Scotland without anything really major happening is something of an achievement in itself!

Orienteering - Forest race (S6D Day 1 Glen Tanar) 2:06:56 [5] 12.56 km (10:06 / km) +521m 8:22 / km
ahr:130 max:161 shoes: X-Talon 212 (May 17)

Not a bad first day, but not setting M21E on fire. Unsurprisingly.

The aim was to go as slow as required in order to not make mistakes.this went well for the first 4 controls.

On 5 I stayed on a trod rather than taking the straight line as I was confident I'd be able to find the massive spur.I was convinced I'd come over the large spur and was going up the right reentrant , but actually I'd gone too far and I was in the one with the bigger marsh to the south.probably didn't pay enough attention to the vague ride on the map but it was...vague.stood stationary for what felt like a year (but garmin tells me it was 90s) while I tried to work it out.but then relocated well eventually.probably lost 5 mins here.

6 was a bit unfortunate; standing at a crag thinking 'how is the control not here' along with another 3 elites thinking the same thing.it turned out the crag we were staring at was just unmapped and the actual crag was about 10m lower down the slope but out of sight.I blame the map for this one.

The good thing was, now in a vague group of 4.2nd in this group to 7, taking very similar route, then I think we split into two 2s on the long leg,I took a steeper line with the foreign (Norway?) guy.we found 8 together and caught the person ahead, dunno who it was yet but will be able to work it out later.they both got ahead on 9 but messed up 10, so I caught them and we were back together on 11.then the long leg to 12 we all took slightly different lines; mine was a bit too high so they were all ahead at 12, so I basically put the map away for a bit and worked really hard to catch them again which I did just before 13.I really enjoyed running in an elite pack! In the past my fitness hasn't been good enough to keep up, so this was really good fun.

14 we all took different lines and I'm pretty sure I got away from them? At any rate I didn't see them again and didn't do a lot wrong from this point on.pretty much contoured to the crossing point and then continued to contour and follow the line of bracken to the control.then missed the crossing point to 15 but worked out where I'd crossed the fence and didn't lose time. 16 probably my best leg, beautiful reentrant into the control. Rest ok.

Good apart from 5 and 6 then, and only really 5 was my fault (imho...).I was a long way down the results, but only to be expected, and I definitely beat a few people, so all good.bring on the next 6 events!

Running - Trail race (Parkrun - Penrith) 18:49 [5] 5.0 km (3:46 / km) +10m 3:44 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser

Raining a bit but otherwise good conditions.flat course, description needs updating from 'mainly grass' to 'mainly gravel' since they built a new path and changed the course;I think this was fairly recent though.

I measured it as significantly further (over 200m) than 5k, which fits with it being both flatter and having fewer 180 degree bends then Wilmslow last week, and yet still being slower.

Pretty high standard at the front;I know this because I couldn't see them and there's visibility for quite a long way.

_____

Wow...tough race. I vastly underestimated the length of time this would take due to comparing the distance/climb with Kentmere last week and concluding it would be about 2:20 - if I'd taken the more sensible step of looking at previous results I might have twigged that 2:20 would've broken the course record...

Set off quite fast but elected (lol) to let the leading pack get away. After a mile or so and the first descent they were pretty much out of sight. This was quite steep and I took it quite gingerly, probably annoying the people behind me. Then also struggled a bit with the contouring along the narrow trod to Holme Moss. Once we got onto Tooleyshaw the going was a bit better (although boggy), I was more or less on my own now but one guy did pass me which was lucky as I then followed him and didn't have to worry about navigating.unfortunately just before the final descent to Crowden he stopped to do a shoelace and I overtook and then had to get the map out, curse at 1:50k and then guess - luckily I was right. But overtaken by some more people coming out of Crowden; not sure where they came from as no-one had been in sight;maybe they'd taken a worse line down and I'd passed them without realising?not sure.with them up to Bareholme but they dropped me going down to the stream and up to Laddow rocks. This was easily the hardest bit of the course as it wasn't only hands-required steep it was also a mixture of deep bracken, bilberry and hidden rocks, with no discernible trod.I think maybe a higher line might've been better here but I was following as wasnt sure which course sections we had to keep to the route and which it was free choice.

Once we got to the pennine way I got passed everyone that had overtaken since Crowden, one person after watching him falling neck deep in a stream (he remarked that he was now 2kgs heavier). From black hill to Holme Moss was a tough off path 2k through the boggy tussocks which I didn't remember from the map and found very hard.it was at this point I realised that the course was going to be further than the advertised 25.5k.

There was no one for miles ahead of me now so just tried to keep going at a reasonable pace to get away from the guy behind before the final climb.I reckoned I had at least a minute about 1k before it started.but then when we got there I saw someone ahead that I hadn't seen since the start, and I could still see him at the top, so I put in a bit of effort along the road and caught him with about a mile to go.felt quite bad overtaking on the road when he'd done all the proper fell running better than me...but not that bad. Pleased that I had enough left for 3 sub 3:50ks at the end (they were mostly downhill though).

15th place; happy. Gained a whole two minutes in that last mile!

Peter Bray won in an amazing 2:34, over 7 mins ahead of 2nd, pretty impressive.

My lesson is that for anything over 2 hours I need to take some real food rather than just shot bloks - didn't feel they were quite cutting it near the end.

Glad I ran a recce lap in advance as the course description was very misleading as to the surface!

2 small hills twice each, but mostly flat course along a path by a river. Scenic. Not too busy. Overtaken by a small child after about 1k (3:30) but I don't think he did the whole course? He disappeared pretty soon anyway.

Pleased with the time after no speedwork for months now.

First race wearing new vest :) lots of Macclesfield Harriers there as it's one of our club races. Got to meet a lot more people which was nice. Good cake afterwards which is always the main thing.

Constant rain varying in intensity throughout. Climb seemed to go on and on... Probably in 12th or so place after the first few km but steadily got people back on the very quick downhill and ended up coming 5th; happy with that. New fastest mile in 5:10.

Some very slippery boardwalk sections and in the rain trail shoes were the right choice, road would've been fine in the dry.

Running - Road/Track (MH Track) 45:49 [5] 5.39 km (8:30 / km) +47m 8:09 / km

First MH Track session.
Started with 4 c.360m loops on a grassy bank, about 8m climb each, all about 1:50. I was pretty tired after this; wasn't sure how hard we were meant to try.
Then drills; fairly similar to Bristol.
Then 6x400(60s); there were 12 but those of us racing tomorrow did 6.

400s: 78,80,80,81,80,79

Thought the garmin was broken as it was measuring these as about 320m - but it turns out the GPS was turned off, so it was just using the accelerometer. So actually ran quite a lot further than it says!

Not bad for about 3 months off. Took a bit of getting used to 'on your marksGo' with no gap, rather than Keith's 3-2-1-go. Also it's a nice old woman.

Bought the new vest, which is grey in advance - hooray!

Will make a good recovery run after racing on Sundays; good way of getting in some more climb compared to Bristol. Very scenic.

Orienteering - Urban race (Birchwood sprint) 25:08 [5] 5.43 km (4:38 / km) +7m 4:36 / km
shoes: Adidas Adios 3

Brilliant area for sprints, very well planned courses and SIAC - recipe for a good event.

I however did very badly.

I had two focus points:
(1) - read the description and make sure to look for the right feature
(2) - go slowly until know exactly where to go, then go as fast as possible

(1) - this did not go well, because I forgot about it. I don't think I looked at a single one.

(2) - this did go well, but I learnt that it just isn't a very good strategy. I found that I was running faster, but picking worse routes because I was concentrating on running hard rather than thinking about the best route choice. There needs to be an extra step in the plan; go slowing until know exactly where to go on this control and the next one, and then go as fast as possible. So that's the target for next time.

As a combination of (1) and (2) failed; MP's the first race :(
Two in two weeks - first time ever I think.
There was a butterfly loop, and I got to the control after the one at the centre of the butterfly, thought 'this is the centre of the butterfly, so I'll be coming back here', and then got to the control before revisiting the centre and thought 'now back to the centre'... and because I had got the centre wrong, I went to the wrong place.

This is a weird mistake because I knew exactly where I was all the time; it wasn't until after the race that I realised that I was an idiot. (1) wouldn't have helped here since the controls were on the same feature. (2) was probably an issue.

Apart from that, just 1 mistake made in part 1 where I lost track of where I was and had to come out to a main road and work it out. I think this was about 40s, which is a lot in a sprint. Looking forward to seeing the splits, because even despite the MP I wouldn't have done very well, but I thought I was running ok. But in part 1 I didn't think I did a lot wrong RC wise.

Part 2 I knew I had MP'd but I tried to take it as seriously as possible. But as a result of (2) my route choice 3-4 was dire, lost about a minute here going failing to find a path, then going through unnecessary woodland, and then that whole route choice being really bad anyway even after I failed to implement it.
A couple more bad choices where I only looked in the close vicinity of the control to plan the exit direction rather than the whole leg, and therefore my exits were pretty bad and lost significant time on a couple of legs.

So some good learning points as always; unfortunately the next event is a few weeks away now (S6D).

shoes: X-Talon 212 (May 17)

EDIT: 4th=/28
http://www.mdoc.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#265&cou...

Raining throughout and had been all day, so this was very very muddy. And hilly. Therefore treacherous.

Lost 90s on 2; was it on the wrong crag, or is the map a bit wrong? One or the other.would've lost less time but it was pretty dangerous trying not to slide down the cliff.

Lost some time on 7 approaching from below, when above made more sense.thought it was on the crag but was on a rootstock.

11 took a very circuitous route down the hill because it was so slippery.

13 read as being on the crag again, but was on fence corner (there were no loose CDs and I wasn't going to unfold and risk the map falling apart)

Lost more time all over the place sliding down hills, falling into bogs and not planning exit directions and so leaving in the wrong one continuously.not a great performance.

ahr:138 max:155 shoes: Adidas Adios 3

Fairly standard urban course, unfortunately it's as if I'm determined to make all the different types of mistakes possible this weekend.

Got lost on the way to 5 to the extent that had to stop and work out where on earth the fountain was that I could see.turned out I'd made a ninety degree error whilst trying not to get run over, disbelieved my compass and run quite a long way down the wrong road.ended up with a very circuitous route and lost about 2 mins dammit.

Happy then until 18 where I navigated 17-19 (three controls in straight line; missed middle one; classic mistake), noticed in time but again resulted in circuitous route; another minute at least.

8 mins behind Leon, so 5 behind after mistakes, seems about right.frustrating weekend really!

All part of the sport, though :)

Note

Car broke down on the M62 resulting in a 4 hour delay to trip home - not the best prep for first day at work tomorrow!

Running - Trail race (Lyme Park Parkrun) 19:52 [5] 5.0 km (3:58 / km) +125m 3:32 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser

I think this is my 2nd closest parkrun, after Wilmslow which I'll try next week...

Then Congleton, Bramhall Park and Cheadle Hulme...

Then Wythenshawe, Burnage, Woodbank, Marple...

Then there's another 9 just around Manchester to the N before I even start on the E...

But I digress. Lyme park was great. The first 500m or so has a lot of the climb and I was about 10th going up, but when it became more undulating over the next 500m I overtook a lot of people and settled into 2nd, then caught and passed the leader on the first downhill. A bit unnerving to be at the front as didn't know where I was going... but it didn't last for long, someone overtook me on the next (minor) climb up to the Cage. Stayed with him on the long downhill, but he pulled away on the final slight uphill mile to the finish and finished 11s ahead of me:
http://www.parkrun.org.uk/lymepark/results/weeklyr...

Mainly grass and earth with tree roots and great views. Would like to do this one when it gets a bit muddier as the downhills will be great fun! I very much doubt any of the other local ones are going to be able to live up to that; but I feel I have to try them out to make sure.

Orienteering - Urban race (Peel Park Sprint Prologue) 14:36 [5] 3.08 km (4:44 / km) +62m 4:18 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser

2nd to Leon, about 90s down.

Good use of a simple area, lots of changes of direction and no tricks.

#5 went W when E was much better - W was slightly shorter but added extra steps up and down and then a slope back up again - and involved crossing a strip of 'white' which was more like light green. Obviously you couldn't tell that from the map but the steps should've swung it. Well planned leg! Didn't think it through enough. Probably 20s here.

Went from 11-13 and then back to 12; they are very close so probably 10s.

It looked like a gate was closed on 20 so went around rather than risk getting to it and and finding it locked or something - actually though there was a much straighter route which I'd missed; another 10s.

On several occasions I lost time by not reading the description and identifying the feature from the map... and being wrong; looking on trees when the control was on a fence, etc. Need to ensure to check this even in a sprint when everything is a bit more frantic.

Enjoyed it.

Orienteering - Urban race (Lister Park Sprint Chase) 16:06 [5] 3.38 km (4:46 / km) +55m 4:24 / km

Arrrgh mp.

Knew it was incredibly unlikely I was going to catch Leon so aim was to stay ahead of the guy 36s behind me. Clocked what he was wearing in the start queue.

Set off pretty strongly but route to 4 was atrocious - 18, 15, 19, and 4 all have lines coming from 3 on the map, and to add to that 14 is really close! This prevented any kind of pre-planning as I was too confused. Therefore I tried to implement a route adhoc and it was rubbish. When it's really complicated I need to slow down on the leg before.

Then I was fine on 5; 6 went to the wrong side before correcting (no descriptions, and I wasn't going to waste time unfolding). Hesitated a bit on 9 as the uncrossable looked exactly like the yellow grass, although that doesn't excuse my exit from 9 where I went to the wrong bridge and made the leg a bit longer.

Also I looked around coming out of 10 and saw the guy behind very close, probably 15s or so. Arrgh! Sped up.

Did 11 and 12 well. Then 13 was my mp. Was this due to pressure? Probably. I didn't know which side of the wall it was on but since it wasn't a long way and one was pretty much on the way to the other anyway I thought it would be faster to check both. Then I had to squeeze past people going up steps... and then I must have seen a control on a wall, punched and carried on, despite the fact that it was a good 20m away from my control and the wall was 90 degrees in a different direction. But my route to the next control was the same anyway (actually ran right past my correct control, ignoring it) so I didn't notice.

Did the rest of the course really well apart from suboptimal route to 18; similar distance but went up and down rather than flat (need to stop doing this; see previous race) and was pleased for there to be no sign of the guy behind me.

Bit frustrating and unlike me tbh; its a very long time since I have mp'd. But good fun anyway; I like a good chasing start now and again :)

Would've been 2nd overall; 2nd in both races. More like 2mins behind Leon in the 2nd one, so maybe my questionable routes were more questionable than I thought.

Nice to get out after endless packing and van driving, etc.

There is a gap on 1-2 on the map that isn't a gap on the ground which was a bit frustrating; this cost other people time too. Otherwise happy my route choices and no mistakes other than going to the wrong tree a few times, but lots of the trees were unmapped so that's ok.

Tentative on 14 due to some unmapped paths, 17 due to wrongly mapped paths and 18 due to additional paths and ending up on zigzag path which was slow. Didn't get route to 19 right, but again, few did.

Pretty toasty evening. Ate in the pub afterwards which I wouldn't usually do, but I have no food in Bristol! Good split analysis and chat with BOKers though at my last event in the south for some time :(

shoes: X-Talon 212 (May 17)

Up at 5:15am for the 7:15am chasing start. Straigtforward first few controls but passed after about an hour and 10 be the 2nd place team who'd started 8mins behind. They were moving much quicker than us so we didn't even try to stay with them; just hoped they'd get lost as we went up into the mist.

Due to the mist we opted for some pretty safe route choices as we wanted to preserve our position. Where we did choose to cut a corner it turned out to be very rough and slow going, and actually even safer would probably have been faster! But no nav mistakes today either so a really good weekend in that respect. Also Mark was moving faster than me today so clearly no lasting issues from yesterday.

Our split times don't tell a great story today - 4th - but on all the splits we were within a minute or so of the top teams and so that's why we did okay; but it was easy than yesterday and so we did relatively worse.

Overall results were 2nd, 5 mins down:

I think our day 2 performance was better, but so was everyone else's, only more so. Very pleased with our result, and thanks to Mark for coming out at short notice :)

Treated myself to some x-talon 225s with my leaving-present vouchers from work, and got myself a new survival bag to replace my suspect entirely Chinese branded one which passes kit checks but probably wouldn't actually keep you alive.

Running - Trail race (Saunders MM Kirkfell) 5:12:24 [5] 21.5 km (14:32 / km) +1475m 10:49 / km
shoes: X-Talon 212 (May 17)

Owain injured, so Mark Ponsford drafted in with about 10 days notice (thanks for letting me borrow him Clare!). He came with the protestations that he'd been revising for ages and so that he'd be unfit, but I decided to ignore those :)

Also no-one else was available...

Mark did Carrock last year and I did Harter, so Kirkfell was two classes up me and one up for him. It's the second hardest after Bowfell... when we arrived and looked at the course lengths I was up for doing Bowfell but Mark wouldn't let us. Looking at the courses afterwards Bowfell did look quite a bit harder even though it wasn't that much further.

Determined not to make any nav mistakes on day 1, and this was a success for a change. Some suspect mapping led to a last minute decision to cut across a steep boulderfield on the map (gentle grassy slope with occasional rock on the ground) which gained us a lot of time although obviously we didn't know that at the time. Mark can take the credit for this decision; I gave him the choice to make but if on my own I'd probably have erred on the side of caution.

Despite me doing a forward roll and landing in a stream on the next 20 minute leg, we gained 10 mins here over the 2nd place team and at were 28 mins up at one point. We had one steep climb where I had to wait for Mark for 5 mins at the top, a good route choice leg where we ran quite a long way but it was easy/flat, and then another climb before the finish. Unfortunately Mark's legs gave out about 20 mins from the end and we had to stop a couple of times to stretch them out. But overall we did pretty well and ended the day in 1st and 8 mins up and so going out first in the chasing start. Certainly not where we expected to be!

The whole evening was rainy and miserable from 3pm-9pm unfortunately, which led to quite a lot of sitting in tents sheltering and wasn't very social. But it did stop later, and also the whole day of the race had been great weather, so can't complain too much.

Mark Bown suggested Expedition Foods as an alternative to Adventure Food and Extreme Food, so will try those next time. Also my Zippo was widely derided as being ridiculous (although I still think its great and far more reliable than those plastic things).
