Walking (BG Leg 1 and 2 with Em) 12:22:29 [3] 39.89 km (18:37 / km) +2947m 13:36 / km
shoes: Roclite G290

Plan was still legs 1 and 2 despite bailing yday (and we needed to get to Dunmail since that's where the car was).

Windier today but still pretty nice. Started at a respectable 8ish in the morning. Fine until Hall's Fell; Em didn't like Hall's Fell (in fairness I don't like going down it either, in fact I hate it; I don't understand how anyone can possibly do it faster than Doddick. But each to their own). I looked at some alternative lines to avoid the worst bits, but I think it needs a whole day up there thinking about it.

We decided to keep going for L2 as there was no way Em was giving up twice. Once on the ridge L2 was ok but felt really long when walking since it's so runnable. The cold wind and a little drizzle started and I was up to 6 layers by Nethermost.

We then did High Crag by mistake (sorry Em) and decided to contour around Dollywaggon and miss Fairfield and Seat Sandal. I don't think I've been S from Dollywaggon to the S of the tarn before but it's really steep. In trail shoes if there was any kind of dampness or dew it would not be a great route choice - made me feel a lot better about going the Cofa way; I think the Cofa way would be faster whatever the weather, now.

Went down Raise Beck which was pretty, lots of waterfalls and pools and things.

Glad to get back; we were pretty tired.

Walking (BG Leg 3 with Em) 12:40:45 [3] 35.76 km (21:16 / km) +2821m 15:15 / km
shoes: S/LAB Ultra 2

The target was to walk the whole BG, legs 3,4,5 today and then 1,2 tomorrow. This was retrospectively perhaps a little ambitious.

Set of about 5am from Dunmail after a 3.30am alarm. Torch up steel fell but not really necessary. Lovely day, limitless views. Didn't realize how easy the nav is on this leg when it isn't misty! You can just aim at the summits.

High raise first (still think it's faster, but never done them the other way around). Nailed the Rosset to Bowfell line. Going fine but not fast until LR/WWT. Em did not like WWT, turns out she's fine with exposure eg Crib Goch but doesn't like loose rock. So that shook her up somewhat.

Note to self, the route from Mickledore is probably better on the spur just to the R of the correct gully. The gully is pretty treacherous at the moment.

At Wasdale we decided based on the L3 time we didn't have time for L4 without getting home about 1am. Em was pretty wrecked too. So we thought we'd go back to Honister and then think about just doing L5. But after 12 hours one more climb wasnt particularly appealing either and so we headed back to Keswick by taxi, decided better to save some energy for tomorrow.

ahr:149 max:180 shoes: TrailTalon 235

Standard shining Tor loop. Lovely in the sunshine. Just about getting into sweat-weather.

Feeling pretty good. Knocked 8s off a flattish segment to take back the CR, and got 2nd on an uphill one. Good start to the weekend.

Walked up Nancy with Em as per. I think it's good if I can still get 150m ascent on my rest days.

Nice evening trails from the LC. Chris pushing us to run faster than I really wanted to as usual! Good to be challenged though.

Note

Discussed the results of my scans with my consultant yesterday and... There's nothing wrong with me. So I guess we'll never know!

Ruled out a load of things which is good, though. If it comes back they can do more more tests, but he said it's the law of diminishing returns and I'm young and healthy. 'Young' - ha. It's all relative!

Running - Road/Track (Morning run) 25:26 [3] 5.21 km (4:53 / km) +51m 4:39 / km
ahr:135 max:157 shoes: Pegasus 36 (Blue)

I should really run home from Em's all the time but I don't think I've done it for about a year.

Cold wind, otherwise fine.

This felt tough, not sure why really as it wasn't hard on paper. Really feeling the climbs.

Nice evening although cool and windy (gloves required). Getting dark by the end.

I had been planning on running last night but was totally exhausted. Feeling much better today after 10 hours sleep.

Had a halfhearted go at a few segments but didn't get PRs on any of them.

Running - Trail (BG Leg 4 Recce) 6:13:11 [3] 27.47 km (13:35 / km) +2291m 9:35 / km
ahr:111 max:171 (injured) shoes: Roclite G290

In a group of 8 (!! #rebels) so relatively slow. Felt tough at times though, particularly up red pike and steeple, but fine after that so just a temporary bad patch.

Yewbarrow to RP I wanted to go the straight line route via the tarn, bit couldn't convince anyone to come with me! The path down to the col really is very rocky, though, just feels so slow. Even going up red pike is a bit rocky in places too, makes me think ac might be a goer. Needs another recce (sigh).

Going up Pillar we found a good line to use on the Joss Naylor - from the trig, head straight for red pike sort of parallel to the path but to the left 50m or so of the cairns, then it's grassy for much longer. Have to bear right at the first prominent lump though otherwise would end up too low. There's a few grassy sections that could be strung together afterwards too.

Stayed left all the way up Great Gable which seemed a reasonable route until about halfway - at that point its worth just heading direct 'up' to the summit. The main win though, found a much nicer way down to the Green Gable col. Take the Styhead path instead, which is roughly East, but when it turns South just continue East down the rocky slope for 50m or so until it turns to grass, then turn North and start contouring. There's a very vague trod which comes out just above the col. I destroyed the other 7 by doing this route. Very happy to find it!

I still failed to remember that the best way to the top of Grey Knotts trig is to go all the way around the fence and then just nip up and down.

Defo a worthwhile recce and pleased to finish today with no real issues following yesterday.

Running - Trail (Paddy Buckley L4 & L5 ) 7:46:27 [4] 32.7 km (14:16 / km) +3048m 9:44 / km
ahr:116 max:160 (injured) shoes: S/LAB Ultra 2

Tough day - glorious weather though. The inclines at the start through the quarry were an interesting and unique experience.

If I attempt this challenge I'll have to start in Llanberis (thus making my leg labelling system meaningless). But this leg is so rocky and awkward I wouldn't be able to do it safely anything other than first!

Elider Fach 5531
Elider Fawr 1346
Mynydd Perfedd 1616 stay high after the col
Foel Goch 1356
Y Garn 2135
Glyder Fawr 3302
Glyder Fach 2407 we stayed right rather than going up onto the ridge just before the summit, but it probably doesn't make that much difference, it's all grim
Tryfan 4545 stayed West of the main path but again, not a lot in it
(bridge to West) 3928 I would descend to the E of Ogwen in future, like I did on the V3k. The climb to ole wen is not nice from the south. Summit is at the east end, so if I do approach from the south, can avoid a lot of rocks by staying low once it's flattened a bit
Pen yr Ole Wen 5352 (although actually longer than this since forgot to restart; +10mins?)
Carnedd Dafydd 1758
Carnedd Llewlyn 3512
Pen yr Helgi Du 3020 nicest part of the leg
Pen Llithrig y Wrach 2727
(Capel Curig) 3844 there is a 30p toilet here

Even leg 5 ('the grassy one') has the first half pretty rocky by my standards.

Subject to a successful L1 recce I can see myself having a go at this, bit I don't expect to enjoy it much!

Same as last year, bottom of Grimshaw to Nancy. I did 8:53 last year so a few seconds worse. Walked up the really steep bit; there's a few seconds to be gained by running it if possible!

Felt as good as could be expected for 9 minutes constant uphill.

Feeling surprisingly good given yesterday. Smashed a (downhill) segment, finally - last time I tried it was December and I fell over, so nice to finally get it. Scope for a few more seconds when it's not dusk and not slightly muddy, too.

Someone took a different downhill one from me today, serendipitously.

Running - Trail long (Northern Fells) 6:33:59 [4] 39.1 km (10:05 / km) +2591m 7:34 / km
ahr:121 max:169 (injured) shoes: Xtalon 212 (navy/orange)

Awesome day in the lakes again. Tries the Carl Side ascent of Skiddaw which is shorter than the standard BG and so I thought might be faster or at least similar - but it was about 10 mins slower. Probably because it has a load of flat at the start and then the rest is significantly steeper! There's a lot of scree near the top too so I don't think it would be faster going down either.

Then from Skiddaw we just did a loop of the Northern Fells: Little Calva, Knott, High Pike, Carrock, Bowscale before getting to Blencathra For N to have a look at blue screes ascent. Then back via Blease and Latrigg.

It looked fun to do Ullock Pike from Bassenthwaite, but otherwise I think I've experienced pretty much all the Northern bits now.

Gloriously sunny, mostly. Cold (puddles iced over; icicles etc) but not too bad.
Until: Mungrisdale Common we could see the weather coming in, we suddenly had strong icy winds and swirling snow...for about ten minutes, and then it stayed cold but we'd dropped off the top now and it was nice again. More or less perfect weather tbh - if we'd set off half an hour earlier it would've been entirely perfect, and hour later and it would've been grim for quite a while.

Felt good mostly, a bit of pain after 4.5 hours ish but disappeared soon after stopping.

Good fun to be out with Allen & N.

Orienteering - Forest race (Lyme Park JoG + Score) 1:16:04 [5] 12.1 km (6:17 / km) +515m 5:11 / km
(injured) shoes: Roclite G290

https://www.mdoc.org.uk/results-archive/2021/2021-...

Great fun but laughably bad performance. I always do badly at events with weird rules and this was no exception.

Wearing the wrong shoes for the surprise blizzard/inch of snow, but that was the least of my worries. The details had been very specific about remembering there were controls N of the (Northerly) start, so I thought I'd get that one first. However I was very confused by two things - the start not being at the start triangle, and the security lodge not being on the map. So faffed about massively with my first control only to remember that the first control was actually compulsory... So got that one, and decided the one I got first would have to be one of the ones of the three I could miss - so basically I was in the same position as everyone else at the start but already five minutes down :(

After that, the rest of the course went fine. Interesting to have it sort of linear with different start and finish locations which makes it different strategy from a loop.

Then the score - which was a loop, but a massive OOB section from one edge to the middle which isn't normally there made it very awkward. Decided to go for the max points control but took a terrible route to get there, totally inefficient. Navigating quite well though. Running ok too.

At the end saw I was going to be very slightly late and so deviated to get another 5 points, but that made me 1:02 late and so I needn't have bothered. Never mind!

I've missed orienteering.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Still feeling the after effects of the contrast medium.

Thursday Apr 8, 2021 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

MRI day. I haven't had one before so I will detail the procedure in case I have to have another one and want to remind myself.

Couldn't eat or drink for 4 hours beforehand, so with a 1:45 appt, had lunch immediately after breakfast. Always a good start to the day.

Upon arrival, had to drink 'as much as you can' of what I'll call magnet-juice. So your organs show up better on the scan. It was orange because the nurse had mixed it with orange cordial - I'm not sure what the percentages were but I'm guessing about 50/50 because it was like drinking syrup. Undiluted squash basically. I asked you her about what it was like without the orange and she said it really wasn't very nice. She didn't let me try any, though. Anyway I drank about half the 2L jug they provided. She said that some people drink the whole thing. This is not a competition I mind losing.

Had to change into a gown because I was wearing jeans - could avoid this without metal clothes - joggers next time. Then they got me lying down next to the big tube and put a cannula in (which would have terrified me in itself if I hadn't had one in for three days as part of foot-spike-gate; see a previous edition of this log). Luckily I have a massive vein (which they commented on) which makes cannulas easy for me. They flushed it with saline and then hooked it up to an dispenser so they could control it from another room. Then they made me lie on my stomach with my arms above my head, put headphones on me, and gave me a buzzer to press if I wanted it all to stop. This was probably the most nerve-inducing thing they could've done ('it's so bad that people need a buzzer?!').

But actually it was fine. They made me hold my breath for 10-15s at a time whilst they turned it on. Sometimes it clicked/hummed about once a second, and sometimes more like 4 times a second. Occasionally they would remotely (they were behind glass like in an interrogation room) adjust the bed slightly within the tube which was a bit of a surprise.
Then there was a 4 minute scan where I didn't have to hold my breath, but the machine made more constant noises and everything vibrated. They put the radio through the headphones for that which was a bit pointless as the machine was so loud.

Then they remotely injected the contrast dye (more magnet juice) which I assumed would be bright pink or something but actually just looked like water - cold when it went in but no other feelings. Then some more breath holding, and then a few minutes wait as they needed to do one more after sufficient time had passed since the dye.

That was it. All in all the whole process was fine, other than drinking the magnet juice which was vile. I really don't want to have another one just for that reason! Results next week, probably. I hope they find something to make it worth all the bother, but I'm pretty sure they are going to tell me that everything is fine.

Running - Trail (Kinder Hills with Em) 3:10:06 [3] 19.8 km (9:36 / km) +951m 7:45 / km
ahr:126 max:167 (injured) shoes: TrailTalon 235

Biting cold wind. Got Em some poles so I found some hills for us to have a bit of practice. My own poles promptly broke 30s from the car (c'est la vie) so I lost the chance to show off. However I was struggling to keep up on a couple of occasions - they really do make a difference.

I've never been up Sandy Heys before, only down, but I can now endorse Nic's description of it as one of the finest climbs in the peaks. It's 300m ascent that just keeps on giving. Jacob's Ladder and then South Head and Mount Famine on the way back.

At times I could feel my fingers. Mostly sunny, though! Good day.

Got one of the downhills ones so very happy there. Also 6th/hundreds on an uphill which I'll take.

ahr:108 max:147 (injured) shoes: Roclite G290

With Allen in the lakes. Glorious sunshine and warm in the sun, but freezing in the shade with ice in lord's rake and WWT.

New route from styhead to lingmell for me, getting very confused trying to nav using the watch since the actual map is hard when using poles. The route up from the E of Lingmell back to the corridor route is not obvious are all - perhaps unsurprising as it's not really on a tourist route. Nearly went up scafell pike by accident but realized and turned around #bonusclimb

Scafell via lord's rake - easy climb but kept looking round to imagine going down it and I imagine it would be a bit sketchy. So much so that I decided we should go down foxes Tarn.

Foxes Tarn downhill is pretty sketchy. So much so that LR is probably better given it's shorter! I wouldn't like to go down either of them in the rain. Thinking that maybe that's why people don't go a/c.

In terms of getting to scafell from wasdale I'm not convinced that either LR or going up the scree route is best; maybe just take the direct ish line and come up the grass E of the scree. Much of a muchness maybe.

Cut the corner up past Broadcrag Tarn but didn't get it as right as last time, need to cut left on a grassy bit near the top otherwise it gets all rocky again.

Tried to find the memorial plaque that I know is on a rock on a race line and not on a path, but severely hindered by not being able to remember which race it is. Can conclude it's not at calf cove. I think the race might've been langdale. Tbc.

Went down the band on the Joss Naylor route the way we went up, and it was very slow. Don't think it's the best way down (although it might be the best way up).

It looked like it would be worth a try getting to the top of Skew Gill at 650m and then contouring round and gradually climbing. This looked doable from below and aligns with what Digby said about the best route being on that side. Needs another recce.

Also want to go up great gable from green gable as it looked like there is a bit of a trod just past the col; could be a bit further but less grimly rocky? Will add to the list.

Nice to come down base brown for a change.

Good day out. No injury suffering either since we were going so slowly :)

1 meat and 1 veg scotch egg from Tebay services - veg one far superior. Cake sub par - cake from Tebay is always worse than it looks like it should be - must remember this. Would've been better with another sweet potato scotch egg.

Awesome day all in all.

ahr:147 max:172 (injured) shoes: Peregrine 11 ST

Mainly to try out the new shoes which I bought half price through Vitality using the money I got from selling the Merrells...

They were ok actually. Low drop for a trail shoe, sort of like an inov8 but with more cushioning and the Salomon lace system. Most annoying thing about them is a little metal hoop at the front which I guess you're supposed to attach gaiters to or something, but it clicks up and down every step and is incredibly annoying. So cut those off as soon as I got home, and looking forward to a quieter run next time.

Feeling run down.
