Orienteering race (OK Nuts Trophy Full Blood) 1:50:44 [4] 19.3 km (5:44 / km) +140m 5:32 / km
(injured)

Result not great in position terms, but <10mins behind Geoff over nearly 20k is quite good going; also 35 secs faster would have been 4 places higher...

Conditions challenging in places - bracken and water. Damp to say the least.

Good fun in the mass start; c.200 people all on different courses and mixed in together. Followed Geoff to #1 which was a terrible decisison; around the start it was much better to stick to the paths, whereas elsewhere on the area it was better to go straight.

Made some mistakes which winsplits has captured pretty well; it was a shame some fast-growing trees hadn't been mapped (final details mentioned "some areas of up to 3m high birch trees which aren't mapped"- I don't know if putting it in the FDs excuses this!) so there were several occasions where after wasting time bashing through them, there was a runnable route several yards away.

Apart from that, map was good and planning was excellent; only saw Paul twice at #6 and #32 and yet we finished 20s apart. Due to the gaffling I had no idea if I was ahead or behind him.

To say I don't often run this far, I didn't have any problem with the distance so that was good.

Orienteering race (Farnborough Urban) 39:38 [5] 9.04 km (4:23 / km) +41m 4:17 / km
(injured) shoes: Saucony Virrata 2

Good result: http://www.southernnavigators.com/web_documents/re...
http://www.sn.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#62

Some small mistakes but mainly route choice; otherwise fine.

Slightly questionable route to #5, think N was better, but S was easier and less wiggly.
Should've taken less wiggly route to 10.
Very slow out of 15 due to planning 17...which didn't pay off at all since still thought could get through somewhere couldn't get through.
Route to 17 not good in general; think Richard's better.
Also to 19.
W route to 20 probably shorter but also more complex

Could feel achilles all the way round which was really annoying; I thought it was supposed to be getting better....

due to being at the actuarial conference and there being an accident on the motorway on the way back :(

So tried to go for a 10k run, but not very good at distance judgement so didn't go far enough; ended up being 8k. Not too bad since missed out on 8*1k intervals!

Aimed to stay at 4m/ks and hit that pretty well, but it felt like hard work. Still; 5th day in a row and all that. Rest days tomorrow and Friday.

At least my cold is pretty much gone

Running race (Aztec West 5k) 18:30 [5] 5.0 km (3:42 / km) +25m 3:37 / km
(injured) (sick) shoes: Saucony Virrata 2

Wet and cold...
...but hat, glove and baselayer were definite overkill. Bit hot.

Standard unbelievable; even higher than Pomphrey. Beaten by two girls who were about 12. Started way too fast since couldn't believe the pace of the 60 people ahead of me!
3:34
3:47
3:39
3:54*
3:35

*since it's a 1 mile oval, the k splits aren't even hill-wise. The other ks include a similar amount of up and down, but that is all up.

Managed to outsprint a couple of people in the last 50m which was good.

Little Stoke definitely short distance-wise last week based on this - this course is great for me since it has no corners. It is hillier, but only marginally. Should definitely be the faster course.

Might not make training tomorrow since at a conference in Reading :(

Just did 6 of the 12 400s since racing tomorrow. Would have done more probs but track was super slippery with the ice. One of the floodlights not working; don't know if this made a slight difference to the temperature on one corner but it was pretty tough. Like running on really short wet grass.

76,77,78,79,81,80

So not great. It was 1.5 degrees according to the car. Brrr!
The watch helpfully tells me that temperature of my wrist was 7 degrees.

Orienteering race (BOK Moseley Green) 1:14:42 [5] 8.9 km (8:24 / km) +350m 7:01 / km
(injured) (sick)

7th / 35

Immediately afterwards I thought this was a pretty good run; it was only once I started comparing splits that I remembered all the mistakes...

1 - depression amidst lots (1 min)
2 - bit tentative but ok
3 - came in a bit early but the veg boundaries were right so relolcated ok (30s)
4 - fine
5 - bad route staying on big track; way too low (1 min)
6 - very safe route but ok
7 - safe route S but stuck in lots of brambles...
8 - fine
9 - up to path and down again; not best choice
10 - round bottom
11 - fine
12 - fine
13 - too low and not far enough round; exactly like last time I messed this up! (1 min)
14 - fine
15 - fine; went to wet pit first
16 - went to depression NE of control first and stood for a bit (30s)
17 - went via control on hill in open forest. still a pretty good leg since since ran down the hill crazily fast (30s)
18 - fine
19 - fine
20 - fine
21 - fine; probably not necessary to come out to path
22 - not good route choice; came out to path and all way around rather than straight. should have cut.
23 - not good route choice; came to fence and round rather than back to path same way came in. Then thought control feature was small hill slightly higher up, so went to identical feature too low down. (1.5 mins)
24 - fine
25 - fine
26 - veg boundaries not as clear as mapped which messed up my plan to use them. relocated from white forest on right (60s)
27 - way too far E! hit fence and had no idea what was going on. had concentrated on going down and up renentrant without paying enough attention to compass. bit embarrassed coming out pretty close to finish. (90s)
F - fine

So no mistakes more than 90s (which is good) but altogether...8.5 mins mistakes (navigational; a bit more time lost if I was to include route choice errors but I don't like doing this...maybe once my navigation is perfect I'll focus on the choices!

74:42 - 8 mins 30 = 66:12; shows how well Matt Whipple is running recently that's he's still ahead. 6 mins behind Clive is probably about right.

Not really sure what to do about these - be more careful I guess; although I was being careful!

Running race (Parkrun - Newent) 19:54 [5] 5.0 km (3:59 / km) +46m 3:48 / km
(injured) (sick) shoes: Saucony Virrata 2

Conventional wisdom says that you shouldn't run with a cold...
totally disagreeing with this. Felt absolutely dreadful this morning, until after parkrun when I felt great. I could breathe through the proper number of holes for the first time in three days.

Very happy at winning first parkrun; time wasn't great but conditions weren't great either (rain; mud) - had road shoes on since was expecting about 50% grass, 50% path; actual ratios more like 70% grass, and the track was pretty muddy. Definitelyx-talons in winter in future for that.

Running race (NGOC Woodchester) 56:15 [5] 8.14 km (6:55 / km) +324m 5:46 / km
(injured) (sick)

Lots of track running which I normally don't mind, but felt pretty slow due to parkrun in the morning. Overall good run; marred by #11 being in the wrong place.

Took high route to #1, will be interesting to see the times of those who went low. I think on balance high is enough shorter such that the extra climb is worth it. Bit confused by there being more woodland apparatus than there are black Xs on the map; so just ignored all of them.

Happy with 2-6. Went down and up to 5 which I think is best. #7 tried to aim off a bit to the E and ended up aiming off way too much and hit the track; then I thought the ditch was a stream for a bit. But didn't lose very much time.

Left 7 and the same time as someone and went W; they went E. Got there slightly before, but I think I was running quite a bit faster, so suspect E is the best route (less wiggly, less steep descent).

9 fine. Tentative to 10 due to extra vegetation; maybe a min lost here just stationary. Would have been safer to take the path, but I don't think that's a good option based on the map.

#11 - in the wrong place. This may be the first time in 15 years of O that I can be certain! Failed to find fence so followed reentrant up - got to veg boundary - nothing. Thought maybe veg bounary wasnt veg boundary and it was just fallen trees or something, so continued up hill...nope; definitely veg boundary. So dense it was pitch black inside. Went back down to where control should have been and went up the other side again. Nothing. Certain of where I was, so decided to continue course. Found control on platform on the edge of control circle. Bit annoyed. But as long as they void the leg, not too bothered.

12 13 14 ok; bit dull; track running.

15 just following a fence for 250m; however this wasn't easy. Would have been faster to bail out to the path and run all the way round; however doubt anyone will do this since by the time you'd realise it was the best choice, it would be too late.

1:31 for the 90m run-in is probably a new record? 17 mins/km...

Consistent other than 1 anomaly; quite happy with these since it's harder on the grass than the track, and it was difficult staying upright on the corners and random muddy parts.

Good to come 2nd; real confidence boost after Saturday night; shame not to be closer to Jegor though (although he is ranked 13th, so...)

Lost around 1 min on #1, 30s on #8, 1 min on #17 (although this isn't my fault - path alignment is off on the map (something Richard and I agree about). Please with straight route to 21 (winning split) although straight route to 23 probably wasn't best; 30s. Took the last few in the complicated bit very safely and even then nearly lost a lot of time. So 3 mins off; still way behind but slightly more respectable.

Good result overall

Pretty well paced so pleased with this; nice to be back closer to 18 than 19. I think the course might have been a bit short because they usually make you go fully round the corner that the summer corner makes you cut; that's only about 15m in total though I think. There were an awful lot of PBs this week; but I think that's because many people there will have only done the summer course which is slower due to the grass lap.

Very impressed with my colleagues' sub 20 min times in their "Race of Champions"; the banter has been good.

Still some achilles pain but definitely improving; I hope I will be able to untick the box soon!

Tough race - pleased to come 4th / 128
Muddy and pretty hilly; seemed to be more uphill than down. Felt like a lot more than 10k; given this happened with the XC as well; I think I must just have forgotten what 10k is like.

I was catching 3rd place all the way throughout the 2nd lap but didn't realise he was only 13s ahead at the end! Probably couldn't have pushed that much harder though.

Paul Murrin's time is nuts.

Nice to get out on a Thursday which is usually a rest day - thanks to Richard for persuading me to come (admittedly this just consisted of reminding me it was on)

Went with the shorter spikes; with hindsight it was pretty muddy; longer would have been better. Given this is only my third XC, not good at judging this yet.

Felt tough.

139th / 400ish(?)

A minute behind Chris Beck which is commensurate with my lost fitness; beat Julian Bailey Gard though - think he is much better on road than off.

Running race (Parkrun - Bath Skyline) 19:33 [5] 5.0 km (3:55 / km) +45m 3:44 / km
(injured)

One of the harder parkruns I think, especially in these conditions (ie; wet, raining and had been for some time).

X-talons were the right choice; is probably usually ok with trail shoes though, and road shoes in summer.

Team Bath turned out in force for the first time, pushing me down to 9th:
http://www.parkrun.org.uk/bathskyline/results/late...
although saying that, on a good day with good conditions it would be an 1830 course for me I think (the '30 woodland steps' make for a slow start)

km paces
4:04 (good, since includes the steps)
3:59
4:07
4:08
3:38 (saved by the downhill finish)

Think I'd do better in future knowing what was coming.

I'd like to say something like "wasn't really trying too hard because of Gwent league tomorrow"...but it would not be true.

Was going to do the night o but couldn't face the rain again!

x talons a good choice for this very muddy race, but not so good on the 3.5k toepath stretch at the end.

Whole race pretty good really; found the hill tough but so did everyone so overtook a few people on it, dealt well with the muddy stuff but was re-passed by some on the toepath at the end - pretty much how one would expect an orienteer to get on really.

Pretty worried achilles wise before the start but was more or less fine during the race.

Based on comments on the dullness of Nov Classic, glad I did this instead.

Achilles pretty sore but not affecting running speed, so running pretty well.

Happy with 1 and 2 - lost 30s on three not being able to find the (overprinted) gap in the fence - I was expecting an "offical" gate or something but it was literally a hole in the fence. I guess I could have been more confident about where it must be, rather than getting confused. Found eventually.

4 fine, lost a bit of time but it was worth it to get to the right place and successfully avoid the underpass-trap. 2nd place on shows it was a good choice to go through the park.

Silly route on 7 though, although well implemented, should've stayed lower rather than coming to the top. Didn't like S route that I did to 8, but splits show it was ok. Didn't spend enough (ie, any) time planning this leg in advance because the control exit was straight down a hill that was too steep for mapreading. Must work on this in future, ie identify when this is going to happen and plan more in advance.

Again unsure of best routes to 10 and 11 but splits show that just picking one and doing it was a good strategy as usual.

13 - lost 30s coming in from the E rather than the easy way - classic example of where the simplest route is best! This was a bit annoying since I hoped I was getting better at taking the simplest choice.

Bit of time lost on 21, thought I could get through where I couldn't. Think I crossed a bit of uncrossable wall here as well, but since the length of the wall is well less than 1mm and I had no idea it was uncrossable (or even on the map!) at the time, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

Route to 25 not great since didn't notice there was an extra exit to the park, so went all the way round, 15s.

Then the unfair (?) control 27, basically there were some very questionable line thicknesses (ie too thin to be a thick 'uncrossable' line, but too thin to be a pavement edge or something, and the control was on a wall corner that was barely a corner on the map, so made it hard to tell which side it was (actually one of the sides was impossible to approach from, but the line thicknesses hid this fact well). However, would still have made a mistake here if it wasn't for all that since it was a hard route-choice control. Correct route is probably N at the start. Lost 45s dithering before decided on best route down to other level.

Distracted by a tractor to 29 and not that quick on the last few, but no other mistakes.

Total loss about 2 mins and 2:02 down - but I guess the winner lost some time too. Good to be only 1:30 down on Duncan, and just generally to be near the top in what turned out to be quite a high class field (unusually for an urban).

Feel a bit sorry for Mateusz Podsiadl who was miles ahead until #27 and then lost 5 mins on it - hope it was due to being on the wrong level rather than the lines being dodgy.
