Running - Road/Track (Easy loop with Jeanette) 1:17:24 [3] 14.45 km (5:21 / km) +183m 5:02 / km
ahr:142 max:159 shoes: Pegasus 35 (white)

After transfer from Turin. R hamstring tight, otherwise ok.

Skiing (La Grave Couloir day) 2:46:22 [3] 21.28 km (7.7 kph) +4767m
ahr:59 max:107

Epic. Three couloirs - Du Lac, Banane and something else. Brilliant. I'm good at skiing.

Skiing (La Grave) 6:28:18 [3] 33.53 km (5.2 kph) +4956m

This is what happens when you log skiing including the uphill, then... #cheating

Powder day! Awesome. Lift only open to mid station due to avalanche risk, but we made the most of the conditions! Amazing skiing in the trees.
5 PM

Running - Trail (Quick jaunt) 33:48 [3] 5.32 km (6:22 / km) +155m 5:33 / km
ahr:132 max:152 shoes: Xtalon 212 (blk/red)

Some in knee deep snow, had to turn around at one point since path was too deep to follow. Resorted to roads after that. Weird shaped gravestones at the church.
Tough into the wind with the hail, needed glasses. Otherwise good fun. Like running after skiing.

Running - Trail hills (Ventelon) 31:37 [3] 4.03 km (7:51 / km) +313m 5:39 / km
ahr:141 max:158 shoes: Xtalon 212 (blk/red)

Pre-breakfast up a different path. Powdery snow, a couple of centimetres, and very windy.
Had to do this since I said last night I would. Actually quite nice, but very hard to get out of bed.
11 AM

Skiing (Le Chazelet) 46:05 [3] 8.52 km (11.1 kph) +1323m

Lift closed due to high winds, so got the bus to a tiny resort which was partially open. Very bad visibility and so windy, snow was only good in patches. But better than no skiing!
In the afternoon, skinned up a closed piste and rewarded by marvellous powder. Much better day than expected.

Fingers crossed for the expected conditions tomorrow, which is still snowing but light winds only.

10 AM

Skiing (Serre Chevalier) 1:37:10 [3] 37.04 km (22.9 kph) +3127m
ahr:75 max:105

Some fairly horrible crunchy snow, and a few nice bits, then a 30 min skin before spending most of the rest of the day on piste. Nice in the spring snow and feeling good, lots of hard snow and ice which I didn't like but dealt with. Skiing well this week so far. Did fall over once but no idea why! Several pirouetes but to no avail. Soft landing so no issues.

Was going to run since don't like missing 2 days! But got back really late and weather has started to get a bit grim.

8 AM

Skiing (La Grave Touring) 2:15:15 [3] 11.36 km (5.0 kph) +1888m
ahr:91 max:119

One lift up, then ski down and skin for 2.5 hours maybe, before skiing all the way down the valley to St. Cristoph and getting a taxi.
Ski down was amazing conditions to say it hasn't snowed for ages. At the bottom, had to remove skis, get down a path like something you'd find in an awesome fell race before climbing over a dam. Never done anything like that with skis! Great fun.

9 AM

Skiing (La Grave) 1:58:26 [3] 23.56 km (11.9 kph) +3026m

First day skiing, intimidating to have to wear a harness! But not had to use it yet. The group is all a really high standard which is awesome.

Lots of skating and poling as well as skiing so not entirely devoid of proper exercise.
5 PM

Running - Trail hills (Les Terraces) 31:08 [3] 3.76 km (8:16 / km) +298m 5:56 / km
ahr:139 max:166 shoes: Xtalon 212 (blk/red)

A mile uphill with c.250m ascent, not fast but keeping moving, with a bit more to loop back for Jeanette. Then down a straight way. Largely in mud, some snow. Good fun.

Running - Trail (Quick run with Jeanette) 46:39 [2] 5.8 km (8:03 / km) +239m 6:40 / km
ahr:123 max:149 shoes: Xtalon 212 (blk/red)

Travelling day, but time for a quick jaunt along a snowy path and then uphill a bit.

Running - Trail (Run from home with N) 2:34:16 [3] 21.5 km (7:10 / km) +851m 5:59 / km
ahr:148 max:173 shoes: Xtalon G235

Nathanael and I, in the rainy cold aftermath of Dennis, decided to go exploring in our lunch 'hour' (lol) as I can't make the club run this eve.

Shoes good (couldn't resist at £140, divided by 2 with the Vitality discount, less £50 for paying with the Vitality credit card = £20).
Given that I don't think the graphene made any difference to the mudclaws, thinking it might for the xtalons Is clearly nonsense. But we'll see.

Some lovely new paths and some grim ones. It's wet out there. Had to cross quite a wide, knee deep, fast flowing river which was tiny on the map. Also barbed wire. But what's life without some danger and trespassing. It didnt hail the whole time, there was even a bit of sun as we were finishing.

Tuesday Feb 18, 2020 #

Note

Hadn't planned for a rest day but just cba to go out and run slowly. Already started cooking dinner before I realised that just going for a run on my own was an option... Now it's too late; two elderflower and pear cheesecakes say so.
Will go out tomorrow and Thursday, though.

Running - Road/Track (MaccH A/B Group) 1:36:13 [3] 18.51 km (5:12 / km) +269m 4:51 / km
ahr:145 max:163 shoes: Pegasus 35 (white)

Expected rain which didn't happen, but two layers still an appropriate choice.
Big group where the front was pretty fast, so tried to spend a bit of time there so people were still feeling challenged #runleader
More sedate nearer the back, so some looping.
Then 7 A Group went for a longer route, extra mile or so and more climb, pace was fast until we caught the main group up again.
Good fun, nice eve, ludicrous volume (70 last week) doesn't seem to have had an adverse effect which is great.

Running - Trail (Edale skyline) 3:55:24 [3] 31.91 km (7:23 / km) +1356m 6:05 / km

Probably the last run in the September 2012 (!!!) yellow mudclaws today.
They've lasted pretty well, right? But the soles are detaching themselves, and they've already been glued multiple times. RIP.

Everything cancelled today due to Storm Dennis. So dreams of a HM pb will have remain dreams for a bit longer unfortunately.

Instead, Edale Skyline race with N. Started from Mam Tor and did the loop; didn't feel the need to go down into Edale, so 2k shorter and a few hundred meters less ascent. Nice first half to Win Hill, didn't get a good line up the steep bit, looks like going way over to the right on the trod looks better and then cutting up last minute, since that's grassy rather than heather. Tried going the north way of Win Hill but I reckon that's slower even if it is slightly shorter; path isn't very good and getting to it relies on remembering which bits of burnt heather are the right ones. Think I'll be sticking to the path as per last year.

Swapped windproof for coat going up the ridge as it started raining and hailing and wind. Pretty grim getting hit in the face by 50mph hail and we decided we'd cut it short and go down into Edale - but after about another 30s it stopped and began to look ok again, so we changed our minds. From that point right until really near the end it was just windy, no more precipitation.

Missed the nice race trod to the left of all the rocks; must remember that for race day. Couldn't remember the slabs going on for quite as long as they did! Great descent back down to Mam Tor though. Really nice route actually, enjoyed it, good views everywhere. Glad we started when we did though as looking back over to the other side, it was closing in rapidly.

Feeling alright after this 70m week; hopefully it's making up for three lack of anything really long.

Running - Trail (Run with Emma) 1:03:32 [2] 8.66 km (7:20 / km) +233m 6:28 / km
ahr:125 max:157 shoes: Hoka Mafete 2

Kinda wanted to do a parkrun given cancellation of everything else, but didn't get to bed until 1am, and Emma fancied a run and I wasn't going to miss out on date #1.5.

Good fun in the mud and rain, and good chat during/afterwards :)

Running - Trail race (Mr Sparkle's Dark 'Un) 37:01 [5] 8.22 km (4:30 / km) +251m 3:55 / km
ahr:151 max:166 shoes: Mudclaw 275 (blk)

3rd :-)

Really mild night. Very fast downhill start, but wet rocky path made for a bit of danger. 4th from the start and into 3rd just before the end of the first. Out onto the moor, the top 2 were so far ahead I couldn't see their torches. Climb seemed ok, all runnable, and route was well signed and marshalled. Nice to be holding the map to know what was going on though! Fast along the top with the occasional knee deep step to contend with. Nice downhill finish, very runnable. Fire at the end was a nice touch.

Hung around for ages for the prize giving and came away with a fetching purple hat. There were chip butties too, which was a nice touch. Would do the race again; worth the hour drive from work. Late night though!

Celebrated with 6 crumpets and 6 different types of cheese, and some dried sausage with truffles #Waitrose.

Feeling good near the start and the end but the middle was a struggle! It's going to be high mileage week I think.

Running - Trail (MaccH Fell Training) 1:58:15 [3] 15.52 km (7:37 / km) +620m 6:21 / km

Long run for an evening! Only some muddy bits. Nice way up to the ridge but felt very steep tonight.

Running - Trail tempo (Shining Tor loop) 1:50:50 [4] 19.44 km (5:42 / km) +915m 4:37 / km
ahr:142 max:166 shoes: Xtalon 212 (blk/red)

Left it until the afternoon so the hail had stopped, but still 40mph winds in the town.
Feeling good though. Found a route to a permissive path along the ridge which is a nicer way back than my previous route.
Snowy near the top; only fell over once though :-)
6 PM

Note

Average mpw so far 46.4. Need to step it up.

ahr:140 max:156 shoes: Pegasus 36 (Blue)

Closer and closer to getting an A Group. Group split halfway from about 30 to 6 - much faster from then on with no stops and only marginal looping.
Feeling pretty good again. Dressed for the hail which never came.

Running - Trail (Apocalypse run) 55:56 [3] 8.83 km (6:20 / km) +377m 5:13 / km
ahr:134 max:158

Pre 2014 mudclaws still going strong (ish).
Long Mynd Valleys cancellation announcement about halfway through my journey there (sigh) due to the storm; marshal/runner safety etc. Could see it coming but a couple of hours earlier would've been nice! I know they were trying to leave it until the last minute possible.

Covered in waterproofs and so had to still go out in it, just a quick look to see what it was like. Fine at home, but 100m higher it was pretty grim. Nothing like lake district grim, though.

3/4 tights and waterproof knee length socks doesn't work unforts. The water soaks into the tights and then runs down the inside of the socks. Eventually the socks were full up to nearly the knees. Anyone who saw me running would've got the impression I have very oddly shaped legs. What I need is 3/4 waterproof trousers. These don't seem to exist, but I reckon my mum can fashion some for me...

Running - Road/Track race (Parkrun - Wollaton) 18:14 [5] 5.08 km (3:35 / km) +39m 3:27 / km
ahr:153 max:165 shoes: Pegasus 35 (white)

Nice course, 95% hard surface, some grass, all relatively firm despite the rain although some slippery bits.
Up to the house then down the other side, round the lake and back. All one lap, no sharp corners. Really happy with the time given the course! Must be in relatively good shape.

Orienteering - Forest race (Bramcote Middle Distance) 29:26 [5] 5.2 km (5:40 / km) +202m 4:44 / km
ahr:142 max:171 shoes: Xtalon 212 (blk/red)

4th
http://www.noc-uk.org/events/result?id=627&uri...
+5mins on the proper elites

Shorter than expected - NOC, if you state in the final details that courses are planned based on a Black course which is 7km long; I'm going to expect a Black course which is 7km long. Otherwise don't mention one!

Pretty good run though, and enjoyed it. Mistake on 7, chose down and up rather than contouring through questionable terrain, but turns out it was fine and so lost 30s. Maybe too over cautious? But I didn't want to get stuck in brambles...

Other mistake on 14, didn't spend long enough reading contours and assumed that contouring was a good choice, actually I think it would've been fine although up and over better - but actually implemented contouring terribly, failed to spot gap between two crags and was actually below lower one. Relocated on fence and had to go all the way back up; lost a minute.

No other mistakes and constant split positions, happy with this. It looks like not much of the remaining 3.5 mins is running speed - it's times when I was spending too long navigating and thinking rather than running.

Cold evening, feeling pretty good again though. Lots of marathon chat as everyone else is doing one.

ahr:137 max:157 shoes: Mudclaw G260

Cold (relatively!) evening. Nice to come to the forest again after running from Bollington for so long; forgotten how all the paths join up. Good run; put some effort in up some of the hills. Much more satisfying than yesterday's run.

Probably still didn't justify the three Belgian chocolate and salted caramel hot cross buns afterwards, but went some way towards it. Maybe.

ahr:146 max:166 shoes: Pegasus 35 (white)

Feeling pretty good running wise. Rained - cold hands, although definitely helped by new 3-in-1 gloves. Good chat.

New shoes, where I was sent the wrong colour ages ago and requested a return, and they said ' what; we didn't send you those, you can't return them'. Been arguing with them for ages but since I didn't film myself opening the original package, there isn't actually anything I can do! Luckily I don't care about the colour, and so I've given up and will just wear them - but it's a matter of principle!

Running - Trail long (Shining Tor & Windgather) 2:31:29 [3] 22.1 km (6:51 / km) +877m 5:43 / km
ahr:139 max:167 shoes: Hoka Mafete 2

There were multiple options today but sleeping won, and raining in the morning, so saved the run for the afternoon and the sunshine. Lovely views from shining tor. Way down probably needs work; the sort of tussucks you have to leap between and you know if you're slightly off you'll break your ankle. Fun times in incredibly high ultra shoes.
Still quite like them though, in mild mud they're great. And not actually fallen over, yet.

10 AM

Running - Trail race (Wadsworth Trog) 3:09:19 [5] 31.59 km (6:00 / km) +1346m 4:56 / km
ahr:145 max:177 shoes: Xtalon 212 (blk/red)

21st, compared with 35th last year, and 13 mins faster, so a definite improvement. Snow last year slowed it down - but apart from the snow, conditions were great. This year, no snow, and not massively muddy (still muddy), but c.50mph winds throughout. Like, constantly. Really really really windy all the time. Went through a kissing gate at one point and the blowback was so strong the gate knocked me over! Everyone I spoke to afterwards was slower this year, and the winning time was 7 mins slower. So I'm taking it.

Interesting analysis this year in isolation; 15th all the way to cp3 (started strongly, including up, down, steep up, onto the moor) but as soon as we got into the wind, really struggled, 19th by 4. Then easy downhill to 5 was taking it steady, clearly others not as down to 25th. Did badly first half of 8 across the windy moor again, did well up the hill but down to 28th at 8. Now I'm feeling good though as everyone else is tiring - 25th at 9, 23rd at 12, 22nd at 13, 21st at finish.

No nav issues although Strava implies there's a better line to be taken to the shaft rather than going xc quite so much, which was slow. There's a good trod from the shaft.

Nutrition better this year, just one Clif about halfway and a pack of bloks throughout. Based on last year, took 500ml. Probably drank 300. 3/4s and ls; wore coat until climb at 2 and then didn't put it back on again. Only carried one extra layer.

Splits vs last year
1. 13:09 vs 15:07
2. 6:40 vs 7:21
3. 10:58 vs 12:25
4. 12:04 vs 12:02 effect of wind!!
5. 9:44 vs 9:38 bit of a surprise; not pushing hard downhill clearly
6. 22:58 vs 25:52 strong up the hill, pleased with this
7. 16:33 vs 16:21 wind again, from side, being blown off the path!
8. 28:21 vs 28:26 wind on first half
9. 8:52 vs 9:30 good uphill again
10: 13:50 vs 14:26
11: 9:05 vs 10:13 uphill again
12: 16:59 vs 20:10 (got lost last year)
13: 11:09 vs 11:03 think this is just good both years
F: 8:58 vs 9:35 strong uphill finish

It seems like I've stayed pretty much the same downhill bit got better at uphill - this is excellent!! Quite happy with performance.
