Orienteering (WUOC Middle Relay) 53:47 [5] 6.8 mi (7:55 / mi) +30m 7:48 / mi
shoes: Salomon Men's Speedcross 3

Running warm up/down 20:00 [3] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Men's Speedcross 3

Orienteering (WUOC Middle) 1:02:00 [5] 6.9 mi (8:59 / mi) +50m 8:47 / mi
shoes: Salomon Men's Speedcross 3

Thoughts:

-vegetation was the most useful location feature. Due to the distinct and dense trees that dark green is on the map, it proved very helpful especially in such flat and generally featureless terrain.
-although it is important to be slow and smooth, I found it more helpful to pretty much sprint towards the point until I hit a catching feature. Was there, I'd more carefully move towards the point. Simply due to the incredible speed of the other athletes, going slow and steady would've taken me far to much time.
-every second matters--I found myself taking time while at the point instead of punching and running (like one would in a sprint). Check the control number prior to arriving at the point and pre-plan the next route, so that all you have to do is execute for the next point.

Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [3] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Ran the practice points for a while

Orienteering (WUOC Sprint) 23:50 [5] 2.5 mi (9:32 / mi) +115m 8:21 / mi
shoes: Salomon Men's Speedcross 3

Thoughts:

-made one route choice at a fork that would be much slower
-2 additional small mistakes pretty much took me out of the center pack
-work to be done in improving at sprints, but considering this was my second sprint ever, it wasn't too awful

Note
(rest day)

Mixed Sprint Relay went today, and since I was not slotted, I decided it would be best to rest to prep for tomorrow's fun long!

Orienteering (Arm Chair O) 20:00 [3]

Reviewed course maps, AAR of practice courses, discussed route choices/feature distinction etc.

Orienteering (Long Model Course) 1:05:00 [3] ***
9c shoes: Salomon Men's Speedcross 3

Checked out the long model course this morning. Vegetation features are quite distinguishable but fields may actually be harder to run through than the open forest.
5 PM

Orienteering race (Model Relay) 9:48 [4] *** 2.0 km (4:54 / km)
14c shoes: Salomon Men's Speedcross 3

Exciting practice relay today! Not only did our A team finish 15th (out of 34), but each of us individually hit some solid per k times! Pumped for more racing!

Orienteering (Model Middle) 1:03:00 [3] *** 5.8 km (10:52 / km) +20m 10:41 / km
19c shoes: Salomon Men's Speedcross 3

Completed the Model Middle here today. For about half of the course, Jake and I ran each leg individually and then analyzed our routes. The second half was basically a slower version of a race--but it accomplished the goal of getting that basic fluidity back.

A few points of analysis concerning terrain and technique:

-Logging trails or "rides" are ubiquitous here. Probably a useful catching feature, but they can also look like actual trails or, on the other hand, ditches. But at least familiarization was achieved.
-Vegetation is very distinct. Dark green stands out immensely and swamps are only green, marshy grass. So knowing both will certainly aid me.
-Runnability is excellent; but compass use should be frequent. The terrain is flat and fast (for the middle at least); but this can also lead to running in slightly wrong direction. So staying in contact with the map and compass is crucial.
