Walking 1:00:00 [1] +200m

Did a couple of shorter walks, one from Hopfgarten middle station to Salvenalm and back and the second from Hexenwasser round the Salvenmoos loop. Mainly to bag hiking badge points! Very wet on second walk.
8 AM

Hill Running 1:11:33 [4] 5.18 mi (13:49 / mi) +1160m 8:09 / mi

Run from the hotel direct up to the summit of Hohe Salve via the zig zags to Hexenwasser (33.25) then up the front via Simonalm and Keitalm (53.30). Felt decent the whole way up, the difficulty kicking in just before Keitalm where I started walking the tougher bits. Conditions pretty good with some light rain early on and ran up into the cool mist from 1400m up. Almost chilly at the top. Good climb to get under the belt and around 90secs faster than last year.

Trail Running 19:36 [2] 1.89 mi (10:22 / mi) +120m 8:40 / mi

Got the gondola down to meet T & H at Hexenwasser then we went a run out and back on the path towards the Filzalmsee, turning at the top of hill beyond the meadow. Nice run and Hanna going well. Perfect temperature!

Tuesday Jul 30, 2019 #

7 AM

Hill Running 56:08 [3] 6.23 mi (9:01 / mi) +480m 7:16 / mi

Pre-breakfast run round the Hexenwasser Loop anti-clockwise. Felt quite comfortable/good climbing the zigzags at a steady pace (33.50 to cattle grid). Descended fairly briskly. Nice and cool with a bit of must higher up. Great conditions and most enjoyable.
9 AM

Walking 2:19:00 [1] 6.47 mi (21:29 / mi) +570m 16:52 / mi

Got early bus to Ellmau then just got on the Wander minibus to Wochenbrunner with over 30 people crammed in it! Walked up into the mist directly up to the Gruttenhutte. Probably the most scenic hut in the area and it was misty! Still enjoyed the climb and Hanna flew up in 50mins. Headed down the Grutten Weg and thankfully the mist broke up a bit to give a view of the rocky Wilder Kaiser peaks at close hand. Very pleasant long descent to Scheffau. No bus when we expected one so carried on to Brandstadl lower station (stopped watch in Scheffau). Great walk.

Monday Jul 29, 2019 #

9 AM

Walking 1:30:00 [1] +150m

Walk from the Brandstadl top station to Elmi's Zauberwelt then down the hill via Jaggerhutte & Rubezahlalm to the middle station. Got the gondola back up then walk back to Brandstadl. Various stops along the way for playing etc. Had been very wet overnight and was misty with light rain when we got up (blissfully cool), but improved through the day.
2 PM

Trail Running 52:48 [3] 6.65 mi (7:56 / mi) +280m 7:01 / mi

Ran out along the Schattseitweg and down to Bocking . Ran down the valley and took a slightly shorter route over to Soll via the Moorsee, and back. Sun had come out but temperature ok. Felt ok.

Sunday Jul 28, 2019 #

8 AM

Trail Running 17:55 [2] 1.83 mi (9:47 / mi) +70m 8:45 / mi

Family run up to the Stampfanger Chapel and back

Hill Running 1:17:54 [4] 6.46 mi (12:04 / mi) +1050m 8:01 / mi

Run from the hotel to the top of the Brandstadl. Went via the undulating Schattseigweg at first to Fallbichl then headed up the trail to Hochlechen and on up via the main path to the top. Below the mist initially then in the mist to the middle station. Some sun after that but thankfully some cloud too. Felt good early on though the smaller trails to Hochlechen were tough and steep in bits so legs were pretty tired by the final climb. Good work out.
12 PM

Walking 2:00:00 [1] +10m

Long family downhill walk from the Brandstadl to Soll via the Gruberhof. Nice walk in the mist initially, savouring the coolness, then started to rain about halfway down and quite heavy by the end. Wasn't an issue though, enjoyed it

Saturday Jul 27, 2019 #

8 AM

Walking 3:00:00 [1] +500m

Walk with T & H to the Hintersteinersee from the hotel via Achleiten. Lovely and overcast in bits, certainly not too hot. Finished at East end of the lake.
2 PM

Trail Running 43:08 [3] 5.02 mi (8:36 / mi) +300m 7:15 / mi

Run up the valley towards Filzalmsee but turned once I got to 2.5 miles, as 5 miles was far enough. Sun was out again so much hotter than I was expected. Can't wait for it to cool down properly.

Friday Jul 26, 2019 #

Walking 1:00:00 [1] +100m

Walk round the Forest Mile loop in Ellmau with a token effort at each exercise station, followed by a hot walk down the valley to the Brandstadl bottom station.
7 AM

Hill Running 1:02:23 [3] 6.66 mi (9:22 / mi) +550m 7:27 / mi

Run up the middle climb, Hexenwasser and down the zig zags. Nice and cooler in the early morning. Still the only person to have done this climb on Strava! As steep/tough as expected in the woods.

Thursday Jul 25, 2019 #

7 AM

Hill Running 55:05 [4] 6.23 mi (8:51 / mi) +480m 7:08 / mi

Pre-breakfast run to avoid another very hot day. Just ran the Hexenwasser Loop, climbing via Stoecklalm and down the zig zags. Climbed a bit faster, around 2mins quicker than the other day. Nice but already pretty warm.
9 AM

Walking 2:30:00 [1] +250m

Got the chairlift up to Keitalm then walk down to Filzalmsee. Did a loop via Brantalm and back to the See for a paddle. Walked back to Hexenwasser in the heat then gondola down. Pretty much stayed indoors through the hottest part of the afternoon. Thankfully forecasts show it cooling over the weekend.

Wednesday Jul 24, 2019 #

8 AM

Walking 2:30:00 [1] +780m

Walk with T & H up the shady valley to the Filzalmsee. Good choice on a hot day. After a bit of a paddle, walked to Hexenwasser. Pretty hot by the time we got the gondola down.
2 PM

Trail Running 41:00 [3] 5.1 mi (8:02 / mi) +180m 7:15 / mi

Legs felt fine so thought I better take the hit and go for a run in the heat (32C). Headed down the gravel path and then west along the river before heading over to Soll via Moorsee. Finished by heading up to chapel so the finish was downhill. Started with a wet cap which bought 10mins of overheating prevention. Not too bad by finish.

Tuesday Jul 23, 2019 #

7 AM

Hill Running 58:38 [3] 6.25 mi (9:23 / mi) +480m 7:34 / mi

Decided on a pre-breakfast run to avoid the heat. Ran the Hexenwasser Loop climbing up the long way via Stoecklalm (slower way round). Really nice conditions with blue skies and some cool in the shade which was 80% of the climb. Took it pretty steady/easy.
11 AM

Walking 1:40:00 [1] +150m

Walk with H & T from Ellmi's Zauberwelt across to the Brandstadl, then down the gondola to the middle station and walk down via Hochlechen and Bavaria to the bottom station. Second walk definitely exceeded expectations, new route with some nice paths/views. Getting hot, over 30C in the valley.

Monday Jul 22, 2019 #

8 AM

Hill Running 1:24:18 [3] 8.89 mi (9:29 / mi) +780m 7:27 / mi

Run up the valley to Filzalmsee (LT 43.05) and back via Hexenwasser and zig zag descent. Did descent fairly brisk. Lucky the weather wasnt too bad heat wise. Took the climb a lot steadier than yesterday. Did same run on first Monday last year in almost exact same time. Consistent!
12 PM

Walking 1:30:00 [1] +40m

Downhill walk with H & T from Hohe Salve down to Hexenwasser via Rigi, Kraftalm and Stoecklalm. Annoying that the hiking stamp at Kraftalm wasn't there as they're in the process of rebuilding it! Getting quite hot.

Sunday Jul 21, 2019 #

8 AM

Trail Running 18:07 [2] 1.8 mi (10:04 / mi) +70m 8:59 / mi

Family trail run up to the Stampfanger chapel and back
1 PM

Walking 1:00:00 [1] +60m

Walked back along the valley from Brandstadt lower station to hotel
2 PM

Hill Running 54:12 [4] 6.23 mi (8:42 / mi) +480m 7:01 / mi

Run up to Hexenwasser via the zig zags (31min) then down via Stoecklalm. Climbed quite strongly but had to take first mile of descent pretty easy because of that. Not to bad temperature wise.

Lactate Shuttle Session round the triangle with Dave B & Dave H - 10 x 1min brisk, 1min float. Running quite well. Quicker than last time on way out, but not way back I suspect as last 2 or 3 were hard! Kept pace with Dave B with Dave H just behind. Humid but overcast.

Road Running 16:38 [2] 2.12 mi (7:51 / mi) +40m 7:25 / mi

Run back up to work
7 PM

Sunday Jul 14, 2019 #

9 AM

Road Running 9:02 [2] 1.29 mi (7:00 / mi)

Helix Junior Parkrun #119 with Hanna. Strong run though think she was a little tired in second half. Equalled Helix PB so good stuff. Definitely on for sub 9 with fresher legs. Quite warm.
10 AM

Hill Running 1:22:01 [4] 8.52 mi (9:38 / mi) +760m 7:32 / mi

Run from Alva Glen, up the landrover track up the glen to the back of Craighorn, Ben Buck, Ben Cleuch, Ben Ever and back with Dave. Humid but overcast, so ok for running. Put a bit of effort into the climbs, though legs a bit tired. Fitness decent. Boggier than the lakes for sure!

Saturday Jul 13, 2019 #

8 AM

Hill Running 47:45 [4] 6.27 mi (7:37 / mi) +320m 6:34 / mi

Run along railway line to far end of Latrigg, up the East ridge then down via the zigzags. Ran it at a pretty solid pace. Did the descent from the top to the road pretty quick (3k in 9.48), and got 4th on the segment. Felt decent. Dry conditions.
9 AM

Walking 2:03:13 [1] 6.02 mi (20:28 / mi) +530m 16:04 / mi

Last family hill walk of the holidays with Tracey & Hanna - Carrock Fell and High Pike from the car park just north of Stone Ends. Hanna shot off up the miners track though they both struggled on the loose gravel on the steepest section of the path. Was very tricky. Beyond Carrock Fell the route was very grassy so a pleasant stroll. Ground so dry which was a bonus as could be very boggy otherwise. A bit if mist on the tops but largely clear. Great week.

Friday Jul 12, 2019 #

9 AM

Walking 3:24:51 [2] 8.07 mi (25:23 / mi) +840m 19:11 / mi

Hill walk with Hanna & Tracey from Buttermere up Red Pike, High Stile and High Crag. Hanna set a strong pace up Red Pike. Arrived at the top in the mist but otherwise really nice walking conditions. Made sure on High Stile to go as far north east as possible to make sure we bagged the highest top in the mist, which broke a little when we got there. Had lunch on the way down High Crag once we cleared the scree, then cut down grassy slopes to the Scarth Gap path. Hanna decided to do an interval session along the lake, as if the hill walk wasn't taxing enough, stopping every 200m or so for us to catch up. I was going to go out a run after but decided to save it for a faster Latrigg tomorrow.

Thursday Jul 11, 2019 #

8 AM

Trail Running 1:19:23 [3] 9.35 mi (8:29 / mi) +300m 7:43 / mi

Run to Portinscale then down the west side of Derwent Water via the terrace on the way out and the shore on the way back. Took it fairly easy. Legs a bit tired but ok. Great trail run route. Little bit on rain and hills claggy.
2 PM

Walking 1:20:00 [1] 4.0 mi (20:00 / mi) +250m 16:45 / mi

Walk round the Seat Howe trail at Whinlatter with Tracey & Hanna. Easy hill walk for a change!

Wednesday Jul 10, 2019 #

8 AM

Hill Running 51:17 [3] 5.82 mi (8:49 / mi) +320m 7:32 / mi

Run up the zig zags to Latrigg, down East ridge and back via car park. Basic run before hill walk. Done rain showers but generally fine. Fatigue accumulating a bit but not too bad.
10 AM

Walking 3:08:00 [1] 7.5 mi (25:04 / mi) +640m 19:49 / mi

Hill walk with Tracey and Hanna from Honister up Fleetwith Pike and Haystacks, then back via Moses trod. Misty from the car all the way to the summit of Haystacks when it suddenly cleared. Navigating up Fleetwith was interesting given all the mine workings. Path pretty rough going, on Haystacks in particular, but a good route and Haystacks is a cracking little hill.

Tuesday Jul 9, 2019 #

10 AM

Trail Running 23:49 [1] 2.2 mi (10:49 / mi) +120m 9:15 / mi

Family run at Whinlatter. Nice out and back with loop at the far end, and quite hilly.
2 PM

Trail Running 1:23:37 [3] 9.48 mi (8:49 / mi) +460m 7:40 / mi

Glenderaterra loop clockwise via Latrigg car park, Blencathra Centre and railway track back. Mist on the tops but only an occasional bit if drizzle, so ideal running conditions. Felt fine and took it fairly easy.

Monday Jul 8, 2019 #

8 AM

Walking 2:39:38 [1] 7.61 mi (20:59 / mi) +800m 15:49 / mi

Hill walk with Hanna & Tracey from Latrigg car park up Little Man, Skiddaw and Lonscale Fell. Lucky with the weather - cool, dry and overcast, but all the hills clear. Hanna was going really well, up Little Man in just under an hour. Thought it was going to take 4 hours but she was still full of energy at the end. Won't be long before were slowing her down! Magic walk.
1 PM

Hill Running 52:30 [3] 6.24 mi (8:25 / mi) +320m 7:15 / mi

Run along the railway line to the back of Latrigg, then up the east ridge to the top, and down by the zigzags. Steady effort though fairly relaxed pace. Felt better than expected after morning walk.

Sunday Jul 7, 2019 #

8 AM

Hill Running 50:40 [3] 5.66 mi (8:57 / mi) +310m 7:39 / mi

Latrigg via the zig zags, down east ridge then back via the car park. Took it nice and easy. Legs felt good. Very nice conditions.
9 AM

Walking 1:14:56 [1] 2.76 mi (27:09 / mi) +170m 22:47 / mi

Walk up Great Crag from Watendlath with Tracey & Hanna. Nice short Wainwright in nice dry weather.
3 PM

Trail Running 13:54 [2] 1.44 mi (9:39 / mi) +70m 8:23 / mi

Warm up job with Sharon.
4 PM

Hill Running race 12:56 [5] 1.17 mi (11:03 / mi) +190m 7:21 / mi

Langdale Gala Fell Race - Thought I might as well run since Hanna was doing the junior race. Was a real blast - out the field then straight into a hands on knees climb up a steep path, rocky and loose in bits. Legs were burning by the top where there were a couple of undulations before an initially steep dry gravelly path, very tricky. Passed one guy on the descent but he hung on and ended up having to do a mega sprint to hold him off. Enjoyed the race and ran ok. 8th out of 49.

Saturday Jul 6, 2019 #

11 AM

Hill Running 1:08:23 [3] 7.68 mi (8:54 / mi) +590m 7:11 / mi

Run at Whinlatter up Seat Howe via horsebox junction then across to Barf and Lords Seat before dropping down to the climb back over Seat Howe, to reverse the outward loop back to the start. Felt pretty decent and worked fairly hard in places. Nice conditions, fairly dry underfoot, and quite cool in the woods. Interesting how much better I've felt the past few days. Maybe the pollen was making me feel sh#t!

12 PM

Road Running 16:18 [2] 2.21 mi (7:22 / mi) +10m 7:16 / mi

Run down to AS. The Queen drove past in Lothian Road and in the park. We can obviously run as fast as her armoured car!

Hill Running 29:40 [4] 3.19 mi (9:18 / mi) +270m 7:22 / mi

Run from the boulder round Queens Drive to Dunsapie Crag where we ran round the back then dropped into Duddingston. Ran up MFD fairly hard, though steepest bit was a hard walk. Ran about 7.40 - 7.50 though the section up to the road was pretty overgrown. Dave followed me the whole way up though he was working hard too. Andy a bit off the pace but good effort. Continued over Nether then down the (dodge the ) tourist descent. Good overcast, dry and cool conditions though a fresh west wind.

Road Running 18:02 [2] 2.38 mi (7:35 / mi) +50m 7:07 / mi

Run back to work. Drama on the way back was a fire between two buildings across from Dynamic Earth so had to divert up to the Royal Mile before dropping back down to the Cowgate.
