10 AM

Hill Running 1:52:01 [3] 8.37 mi (13:23 / mi) +800m 10:19 / mi

Run from Alva Glen car park up Ben Ever, Ben Cleuch, down to the snowy hollow NE of Ben Cleuch then traverse around the north flank to Ben Buck, down the burn and back the Land rover track. Snow lying above around 350m, quite soft until 550m, above which it had just refrozen after the overnight rain. Quite tough work, with a breakable crust, so a lot of post holing. North side of Ben Cleuch was very snowy with up to 3m depth in the hollow. Great workout. Fairly strong cold south wind. Took it pretty steady as fitness obviously not great, but enjoyed the hard work in the snow. So quiet too, saw nobody above the Nebit col. Love winter hill runs.

12 PM

Road Running 36:02 [3] 5.07 mi (7:06 / mi) +30m 6:59 / mi

Carrick Knowe loop. Set out steady and picked the pace up a little, so an easy-ish progression run. Good to stretch the legs a bit. Cold and wet with easterly breeze.

12 PM

Trail Running 46:10 [3] 5.8 mi (7:58 / mi) +170m 7:18 / mi

Run to Craigcrook Road then steps climb up Corrie Hill and back by Ravelston. Ran with Dave. Fresh west wind though sheltered on the hill. Just about crawled up the steps, fitness somewhat lacking due to the cold which is only very slowly improving.

12 PM

Road Running 37:15 [2] 5.01 mi (7:26 / mi) +30m 7:18 / mi

Nice to get out a proper run, albeit steady pace, with Marco and Dave round the golf course loop. Definitely a bit tougher than it should be but felt the benefit of clearing out the lungs a bit. Better than yesterday's rest day for sure.

Bike 20:00 [1] 4.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Tried another rest day to help cold recovery. Seems to be hanging around though.

10 AM

Trail Running 44:29 [2] 4.85 mi (9:10 / mi) +90m 8:40 / mi

Run at Muiravonside with the FVH kids. Ran with the younger ones (Hamish, Emily, Katie and Sarah-Jane) since not up to doing anything longer or pacier. Good fun for a change. Went along the canal and back with a short break for four very short hill sprints. Nice and sunny, though chilly, and a headwind on the way back.

Trail Running 36:57 [2] 4.27 mi (8:39 / mi) +40m 8:25 / mi

Had to override the temptation of the National since the colds been improving, so headed out for a lap of Linlithgow Loch from the house instead. Good choice as energy levels were low, and the run felt more than enough. A driving blizzard in the first half didn't help (luckily from behind). Conditions muddy, flooded and a few blown down trees. Spent rest of day spectating at the National.

Friday Feb 21, 2020 #

Bike 20:00 [1] 4.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

Note

Tempted to try a run but will give it another day. Unfortunately not the National.

Bit of a warm up jog up beyond the loup and back.
2 PM

Hill Running 1:06:07 [5] 5.76 mi (11:29 / mi) +750m 8:10 / mi

Carnethy 5 Race - Given the forecast it really did seem borderline whether the race should go ahead or not. Seemed not too bad until we were lined up, then the wind and rain really picked up. Started pretty steady and was pretty much in a queue up Scald Law. No bad thing as certainly needed the energy once we got to the top. Was exceptionally wild over the next three hills to West Kip. Trying to get to the turn on West Kip was almost a crawl, kudos to the marshals. Really enjoyed the descent to the Howe, particularly the last bit which was very sloppy/slidey. Gained good ground on those I'd been with or behind on the Kips. A few folk passed me again up Carnethy, Angela for one powering ahead. Ground it out to limit the damage. Tough going up the top bit to Carnethy, then wiped out tripping on a rock round the cairn. Luckily gloves took the impact rather than skin. Got going again on the descent and loved the line via the scree, most fun. Hit the bottom and Angela appeared again, so ran her down across the bog. Was an exceptionally tough race and the toughest weather I think I've raced in bar mountain marathons (Howgills & Galloway). Glad to stick with it and pleased with the result given how challenging it's been to try and get fit again. Lucky the downhill form was good today. 56th overall, 13mins down on Sasha. Might've been close to breaking the hour on a perfect day but who knows. Credit to the marshals and all the helpers, as well as Olly for putting the race on. It was horrendous at times but all the more memorable, and satisfying for it.

Session at Warriston - 3 x Warriston Big Loop Anti-Clockwise (starting every 12mins). Lap times - 10.17, 10.16, 10.21. Pretty even pacing. The GPS paces for the laps were 6.06, 6.09, 6.06 which shows the potential discrepancy in using GPS data. Decent session. Starting to feel a bit better although pace no great shakes. Nice spring-like conditions. A bit of a headwind in the park. Miles behind Robert but not too far behind Andy/Stuart.

2 PM

Hill Running 1:50:54 [4] 7.94 mi (13:58 / mi) +1220m 9:27 / mi

Leg 4 route with Angela from Alva Glen CP, Wood Hill, Tilli Glen (lower bridge), The Law, Ben Cleuch, Ben Ever, The Nebit and back. Fair to say was close to flat out for current fitness on the climbs, with Angela running ahead. Conditions were tough underfoot as the ground was very wet, so slippy/soft on the way up and had to run off the path on the way down. Great run though and great training. Legs were the most tired they've felt in a long time by the finish. Luckily the wind was just OK, with a bit of a NW headwind on The Law. Rain came on on Wood Hill and rained for the rest of the run. Turning to sleet by Ben Ever.
