Running (Nanticoke AR) 7:31 [3] * 1.35 km (5:34 / km) +2m 5:32 / km
ahr:146 max:160 1c shoes: VJ Falcons

prologue run aka sprint until you realize you're doing this for the next 10 hours and regret

canoeing/kayaking (Nanticoke AR) 58:53 [3] * 4.76 km (12:22 / km) +2m 12:20 / km
ahr:130 max:159 8c

never go on a tandem kayak with me or my mom. and unfortunately we were on one together. lots of arguing (she was supposed to steer cuz she was in the back but she was aiming right at trees and sticks but according to her it was "part of her plan"). also might've been because we had to wake up at 5 am. we are not morning people.

Biking (Nanticoke AR) 52:41 [3] ** 8.58 km (6:08 / km) +9m 6:07 / km
ahr:125 max:155 7c

didn't make it out of my clip so I fell and Garmin decided it was an "incident" and started sending out emergency communications to my emergency contacts (my mom + my family friend) and I didn't find out for 10 minutes so our friend was probably a little concernced but she knew we were on an adventure race.

do you actually *need* air in your tires when biking

as soon as we got out onto the long road stretch I realized I had lost our tire patch kit (it was clipped onto my handlebars). I told my mo and we continued, hoping we wouldn't get docked a point since it was mandatory gear. But we kept biking, going pretty steady, we even passed a pair. But not even a minute after we passed them my mom noticed my rear tire was a little flat. In fact, very flat. I tried pumping it up a bit with our handheld pump, hoping it was just a fluke. But not even 5 minutes into biking my tire was flat. This time completely. I was on the rim. When we saw the pair we passed, we asked them if they have a spare tire patch we could use, and they did, but it wasn't adhesive, we needed glue with it, but ofc we weren't gonna take their glue or make them wait. so we had the tire patches and continued, planning to work on the tire closer to some of the controls.

when my mom dipped into the woods to get a control (the only one where I wasn't the one punching it), I got my tire out and started looking for a hole. Took me a while, but found the sucker. Obviously the patch wasn't sticking, so we tried to stick it on with duct tape. We just put the tire back in and hoped. Didn't hold air any better.

When we finally made it to TA station for orienteering course A, we asked the lady there if she could ask other racers if they either have glue or self-adhesive patches they could spare and set out for the o course.

Walk (Nanticoke AR) 1:30:30 [3] * 5.86 km (15:26 / km) +1m 15:26 / km
ahr:126 max:164 4c shoes: VJ Falcons

Set off on the wrong trail so we cut through the woods. I didn't have long socks on. Ripped my shins up because that was green, thorny hell.

The navigation was too easy, It was either follow a trail or follow a canal for 500m+. With all the stress from the flat tire I was not feeling it. I was starting to shut down, so we didn't clear this course and only got 4 of the 8 (i think?) controls and followed a long, almost completely straight forest road-esque trail for 1.5km. We stayed sane by singing czech campfire songs and other czech classics, a strategy we then used for the rest of the race because goddamn it helped a lot.

Biking (Nanticoke AR) 1:53:51 [3] ** 18.19 km (6:16 / km) +2m 6:15 / km

tire patch acquired! and it worked! so I fixed my tire and it wasn't deflating!! But at this point we were already exhausted, so we made our way back, skipping 3 controls in the center group of bike controls and then getting back in the woods of Trap Pond State park. those woods were so nice why wasn't the orienteering section there, why was the orienteering in a green montstrosity

Actually enjoyed the end. If there were more controls in the Trap Pond area we woud've gone for them, but since we had gotten everything within 30 minutes, we went into the finish early.

Kind of a disaster of an adventure race on our part. Definitely was an adventure. But jesus christ the orienteering section sucked. The bike was pretty good, there was a nice amount of variation (just wish I didn't get a flat and could've biked a lot more), and the paddle was, well, a paddle, and used the mangroves fairly well (I just don't like water sports tbh).

also it was just super. duper. flat. We had cal topo maps (some had overlays of satellite imagery) but there was, like, maybe 1 contour per map. Is it weird I missed the hills? Like uphills suck, but at least the downills are free

Running (Blandair Regional Park) 35:13 intensity: (1:55 @1) + (7:53 @2) + (16 @3) + (12:51 @4) + (12:18 @5) 5.11 km (6:54 / km) +38m 6:39 / km

mix of shortish grass and medium/tall grass. at one point a mapped trail just disappeared so I didn't run the route I had planned and the surface was a lot more energy draining so I cut it a bit shorter, too.

Thankfully the sore throat has gone away, all I'm left with is a runny nose and the occasional sneeze, but it's nothing but mildly annoying.

Note

real annoying that I can't breathe normally for hours after a run. like, I'm getting oxygen, but if I take a deep breath I sound like a whistle and start coughing. like I'd like to push hard and porperly improve at running, but I feel like this isn't something I can train. I can train to get better endurance and better strength and speed, but I can't train my lungs to not attack me even though I use my inhaler multiple times per run.

It's jsut really annoying at this point. Like it feels like I"m not improving but that feels like partially because I can't breathe normally. I keep feeling like this is just me bitching about being out of shape and just not being used to pushing myself, and trying to reason with myself that I'm not out of shape, that it's something out of my control. I'm paranoid this is all in my head and that I'm finding excuses for myself but at the same time it feels like a wall I can't pass. Like yeah, improving physically is tough but you have better days and worse days and you can see some sort of improvement, no matter how small, but this just feels like it's getting worse and worse.

I'm trying to listen to my body and be kind to myself, but I can't help but feel like I'm just making up excuses for myself. But at the same time it's so real and so impossible to stop. I hate not being able to trust myself. I can never tell if I'm just being a bitch about something or if it really is my limit.

sorry just a rant while I'm wheezing and coughing trying to go to bed.

Running long (Patapsco Avalon ) 1:27:33 intensity: (1:26 @1) + (2:44 @2) + (20:06 @3) + (46:30 @4) + (16:47 @5) 11.0 km (7:58 / km) +200m 7:18 / km

god awful run (if you can call it that). My throat feels even more funky today and i feel a bit lethargic, but i stopped by a gad station and took some DayQuil because I didn't want to chicken out of the long run.

had to stop halfway and sit down for a few minutes. i was basically at the highest point, but the climb took it out of me, despite me walking more of it than I'd like. Breathing was a struggle, i wasn't wheezing but i was at the point that in order to be taking deep enough breaths I was steaining my neck muscles and my ribcage.

when i started running again breathing was back to normal, and it was mostly downhill. my L knee wasn't thrilled about the downhill, but at least my lungs were. But i could feel every slight incline, evem had to walk some of them.

still made it under 8min/km though! it's a super super tiny win but at this point, I'll take it.

definitely a super rough long run. glad it's over with. meant to do some weight training after this but i think I'll leave that for tomorrow.

(rest day)

throat feeling a lil funky and my calves are very unhappy so today's a rest day. Also getting suspiciously strong cravings for chocolate, this weekend will be interesting.

Running warm up/down (Annapolis Rock Park) 14:30 intensity: (45 @1) + (55 @2) + (7:53 @3) + (4:57 @4) 2.0 km (7:15 / km) +25m 6:50 / km

crazy how pleasant running can feel when you actually take care of your body

Walk warm up/down 10:48 intensity: (5:07 @1) + (5:36 @2) + (5 @3) 0.8 km (13:34 / km) +16m 12:20 / km
ahr:122 max:143 shoes: VJ Falcons

drills + walking to look for a good hill because the hill I originally wanted to run was too green (I wanted to run the hills off-trail but there was way too much vegetation everywhere). I also never thought of 150m as a long distance butman finding a hill that was 150m long was a challenge.

Running hills 10:43 [3] 1.11 km (9:37 / km) +59m 7:37 / km
ahr:138 max:162 shoes: VJ Falcons

finally found a good hill. 4 repeats of: 150 meters uphill at jogging pace, walk back down
Had Oliver with me, so I parked him at the halfway point of the hill and practiced his stays (I didn't want him to run with me becuase he could overheat).
The hills felt good, not super hard, but I definitely felt it a bit. I probably could've (and should've) done more reps. Also not sure how much of a jogging pace it was, I'd say it was like a faster jogging pace (not quite tempo, but getting there) because I'm so used to running hill intervals all out

Running warm up/down 8:00 intensity: (17 @2) + (1:47 @3) + (5:56 @4) 1.05 km (7:35 / km) +11m 7:12 / km

sailing cuz it's mother's day so my mom guilted me into joining her. very rocky start, we hit like 5 other boats just trying to leave the marina cuz my mom had the genius idea to be the one pushing the boat off of the pier leaving me the one to take care of the sails and rudder and mind you idk how to actually sail i just know how to pull ropes she tells me to pull
5 PM

Running (Crownsville CWMA) 39:47 intensity: (37 @1) + (4:37 @2) + (8:05 @3) + (17:43 @4) + (8:45 @5) 5.14 km (7:45 / km) +129m 6:53 / km
ahr:167 max:197 shoes: VJ Falcons

hungry, dehydrated, tired, sleep deprived run. fighting for my life out there. I was so out of the running mindset, usually I just zone out for the run or start to enjoy it but for the first time in a while 5km seemed unbelievably long. also definitely thought this park was gonna be flatter. but it didn't feel that hilly (despite how much climb I did apparently). I just wanted to go home.
