never go on a tandem kayak with me or my mom. and unfortunately we were on one together. lots of arguing (she was supposed to steer cuz she was in the back but she was aiming right at trees and sticks but according to her it was "part of her plan"). also might've been because we had to wake up at 5 am. we are not morning people.

didn't make it out of my clip so I fell and Garmin decided it was an "incident" and started sending out emergency communications to my emergency contacts (my mom + my family friend) and I didn't find out for 10 minutes so our friend was probably a little concernced but she knew we were on an adventure race.

do you actually *need* air in your tires when biking
as soon as we got out onto the long road stretch I realized I had lost our tire patch kit (it was clipped onto my handlebars). I told my mo and we continued, hoping we wouldn't get docked a point since it was mandatory gear. But we kept biking, going pretty steady, we even passed a pair. But not even a minute after we passed them my mom noticed my rear tire was a little flat. In fact, very flat. I tried pumping it up a bit with our handheld pump, hoping it was just a fluke. But not even 5 minutes into biking my tire was flat. This time completely. I was on the rim. When we saw the pair we passed, we asked them if they have a spare tire patch we could use, and they did, but it wasn't adhesive, we needed glue with it, but ofc we weren't gonna take their glue or make them wait. so we had the tire patches and continued, planning to work on the tire closer to some of the controls.
when my mom dipped into the woods to get a control (the only one where I wasn't the one punching it), I got my tire out and started looking for a hole. Took me a while, but found the sucker. Obviously the patch wasn't sticking, so we tried to stick it on with duct tape. We just put the tire back in and hoped. Didn't hold air any better.
When we finally made it to TA station for orienteering course A, we asked the lady there if she could ask other racers if they either have glue or self-adhesive patches they could spare and set out for the o course.

Set off on the wrong trail so we cut through the woods. I didn't have long socks on. Ripped my shins up because that was green, thorny hell.
The navigation was too easy, It was either follow a trail or follow a canal for 500m+. With all the stress from the flat tire I was not feeling it. I was starting to shut down, so we didn't clear this course and only got 4 of the 8 (i think?) controls and followed a long, almost completely straight forest road-esque trail for 1.5km. We stayed sane by singing czech campfire songs and other czech classics, a strategy we then used for the rest of the race because goddamn it helped a lot.

tire patch acquired! and it worked! so I fixed my tire and it wasn't deflating!! But at this point we were already exhausted, so we made our way back, skipping 3 controls in the center group of bike controls and then getting back in the woods of Trap Pond State park. those woods were so nice why wasn't the orienteering section there, why was the orienteering in a green montstrosity
Actually enjoyed the end. If there were more controls in the Trap Pond area we woud've gone for them, but since we had gotten everything within 30 minutes, we went into the finish early.
Kind of a disaster of an adventure race on our part. Definitely was an adventure. But jesus christ the orienteering section sucked. The bike was pretty good, there was a nice amount of variation (just wish I didn't get a flat and could've biked a lot more), and the paddle was, well, a paddle, and used the mangroves fairly well (I just don't like water sports tbh).
also it was just super. duper. flat. We had cal topo maps (some had overlays of satellite imagery) but there was, like, maybe 1 contour per map. Is it weird I missed the hills? Like uphills suck, but at least the downills are free
