Orienteering 2:02:38 [3] 10.2 km (12:01 / km) +286m 10:33 / km
ahr:152 max:184 17c

my watch died after 14 so yeah rip, almost made it
First time driving to an event alone :)
Diana beat me by only 5 minutes. Pretty satisfied, since I was worried I'd get demolished by everyone and that I was being really slow since the green was killing me and running was way too hard in a lot of places.

no more writeup, I was almost done and then my computer crashed and I lost everything. Screw this, I had a rough time out there, messed up 7, and was slow. As usual.

Orienteering race (Sprint, F21+) 24:41 intensity: (6 @1) + (1:29 @2) + (8:51 @3) + (14:15 @4) 3.56 km (6:57 / km) +23m 6:43 / km
ahr:160 max:177 19c

Overall I'm very proud of this run- I ran under 7 min/km, which honestly hasn't happened while orienteering in a while- at WOC i couldn't even make it under 8 min/km, so it's good to see I improved in that sense (and yeah, I know the terrains were different, but I put in a similar amount of effort at WOC and in this sprint, and this sprint went significantly better).
Diana beat me by 10 seconds though, which is frustrating- part of me is glad that I was so close behind her, but part of me is frustrated because I made a 20-30 second mistake (and a very dumb one) on 15. Plus, there were so many other places I could have ran a little harder and caught up those 10 seconds, but I mean that's all part of orienteering. Next time, I'll push a bit harder and actually catch up to Diana-

http://www.dvoa.org/gadget/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi?act=...#

1) I was surprised at how many controls were around the area where my 1 was, thank goodness I checked the code. By just glancing at my map I couldn't really tell where behind the wall the control was, since the wall was gray, so I figured it would be safer to run behind the wall. I think I might've lost 1 or 2 seconds from hesitating and not knowing exactly where the control was on the wall and running at a curve rather than a straight line.

2) I ran to the north of the fenced off areas becasue I didn't want to cut through the woods. I honestly thought that the control was on the other side of the corner, which was still an inside corner but on the other side of the north-south hedge, so I ran a little loop, but not bad. Probably lost 1 or 2 seconds again, but maybe not, because if I went the other way I could've lost those seconds in the woods- depends what the woods were like in that spot.

3) I just curved around the building, completely ignoring the trails- it would've taken me longer to try and figure out which path I was on than the time I might have lost by running on the grass rather than on the path.

4) I just gunned it to the north tip of the field and pushed through the woods, came out a little too much to the right but it was easy to correct. Apparently it was very worth it, I won the split- I still think I lost maybe 2 or 3 seconds from getting out of the green too much to the right.

5) There was a guy from West Point exiting the control at the same time as me, and he headed norh to the field, and I kind of subconsciously followed him at first, since I originally wanted to follow the river but when I realized i was going to the field, I figured that I'd just follow the edge of the field to the path, and then from the intersection I took an estimation (not really a bearing, just kinda guessed) to 5. I just ran between the trails and knew I'd see the control since the woods were relatively open and at this scale, i couldn't miss it in that small area. I probably lost up to 5 seconds from going so around.

6) Messed this one up a little bit, probably costing me 3-5 seconds. I originally checked if there was a gao between the buildings where the control was, but I forgot to check if there was a gap in the building in front of the control too, so I didn't notice that the buildings were connected. Wasn't too bad of a mistake, I just probably stared into the map longer than necessary but not long enough to notice I was wrong.

7) Ran north of the fenced off area and then just ran to 7 which was easily visible at the tree.

8) There was a trail of people running to the same control (at least one other person in the trail was on red, too), so we all just booked it to the building.

9) Ran around the west side of the building since there was a strip of field, and I figured it was going to be shorter.

10) Just booked it to be honest. Noth much thought going on.

11) Returned to the path, ran up it to get out of the wooded area, and than spotted the tent the control was behind and ran. I thankfully checked my map and saw the control was behind the green spot just across the path from the tent.

12) Saw the shed thing on the field, so I ran towards that and then ran straight to the edge of the wall since I checked the description and saw the control was inside the corner.

13) Ran on the road SW and then turned NW after the end of the wall, and then I could see the area of white woods and the control in it, which was 13.

14) Ran towards the picnic pavilion to the west, then ran on the trail (not on the map) through the yellow, crossed the green on the trail on the map, ran around the top of the green on the yellow field and straight to the control. I don't think I really lost any time, except for on route choice probably.

15) yeeeeah whoops, didn't check my compass and ran to the green spot south of the distinct tree 15 was on. I thought that tree was suspicious- the control was really well hidden behind it. I also slowed down at this point because I was getting really tired and the rough open was not going well- I kept getting caught in the grass and in thorns.

16) Booked it to the path asap. The rough open sucked and I couldn't properly run through it, I knew I'd save time by going on the path. I saw the control while I was coming up to the trail, but I was still looking at each of the exercise machines to just check that I don't miss the control.

17) Ran on the path, and as soon as the field to the left ended, I was looking into the woods and was prepared to run in. I saw the control from the path so I ran in and got it.

18) Ran on the path to the north of the control and ran over to the boulders 18 was on. I saw it very quickly.

19) Ran down to the path to the intersection where the control was on.

20) Ran to the control as straight as I could, ignoring the path but keeping off of the rough open.

Finish) booked it

I really liked this course, it was fun, and the woods were fun too- Diana beat me by 3 minutes which is more than I hoped, but oh well (not that I'm surprised)

http://www.dvoa.org/gadget/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi?act=...

1) I messed up right out the gate. Well, not really. I started on the vehicle track and crossed over to the trail and ran until I got to the disc golf basket, from which I took a bearing to the control to make sure I hit it. I don't how it went so wrong (probably vegetation) but I ended up at the line of rootstocks to the west, and I was thinking, like, how are only two of these mapped? there's like 4 or 5 big ones here- and yeah they were mapped, I just wasn't in the right spot. After running around the rootstocks and seeing the control isn't on any of them, I returned to the paved platform to the west of the basket I originally attacked off of and took another bearing to the control, now seeing that I was in the wrong spot and the people who started a minute after me had caught up and we attacked the control together. I lost about 1:30-2 mins on this control.

2) Dropped down to the large trail to the north of the line and ran on it until I got to the bend SE of 5, and then I contoured over to the control. I'm very happy with this route choice. I wanted to avoid as much climb as possible, and I think I managed that pretty well.

3) I didn't take a bearing and I don't know why- that was pretty dumb of me, but I got lucky thankfully. I ran in the correct direction, and just around 3 I stopped to try to figure out which stream I just crossed when I crossed the stream just west of 3. When I went to look around to find something to locate myself on, I saw the control. Really damn lucky, but distance estimation is on point. I probably lost 30 sec because of the hesitation on the end.

4) I think I did take a bearing and that I found it no problem. I don't remember much of this leg so it probably went well.

5) Took a bearing and hit it right on.

6) Rip- I ran on the same significant trail I used for 2, and made sure to turn left right before the complicated hill area. But, the trail I planned to run on seemed to have branched off of the trail at the bottom way earlier than I expected, so I ended up following that trail until I hit the other larger trail on the other side of the hills, which is where I knew where I was and I just did a bit of a loop around the hilltop where 6 was. Probably lost under a minute.

7) Ran down to the big trail. Don't question how I got down there, I don't know either. I did a weird squiggle costing me maybe up to 10 secs. Ran north on the trail, kept to the right where it split, and ran until the iintersection of the smaller trail. I ran up on that trail to the first bend, where there were some big fallen trees blocking the way to the rest of the trail anyways. I split off from the trail at that first bend and followed a rough bearing I had set up.

8) Took a bearing and only after did I notice that the trail leads exactly on the line, so that was helpful. I slowed down a little bit when I was leaving the trail because I wasn't 100% sure and I wanted to check my compass a few times. Cost me less than 5 seconds.

9) Hit the trail and ran north on it and around, dropping down into the pit and going around the hill and seeing the boulder iwtht he control. I might've lost some time since I ran a pretty large loop around, but I think it was faster to run around than try to deciper the contours.

10) Ran west to the big trail, I technically took a bearing at first but then I just followed where the vegetation would let me. I hit it a bit north of the intersection, so I ran south to it and took a right. At the next intersection I took a left and ran straight until I got into the disc golf area again where i ran on the strip of white woods. Entering the strip, I saw a paved platform but I thought it was too soon for it to be the first one in the strip (it wasn't), so I counted the second platform as the first and only when I saw the third platform a bit off to the side in the woods I realized I miscounted and I ran into the woods and found 10. Maybe lost less than 3 seconds.

11) Took the trails over to the white strip NW of 11 and started running down that strip. It had really rocky ground, so I was focusing more on not dying and running than on navigating. Thankfully, again getting lucky, I realized that when I was just below the control and I could see it as soon as I turned my head. Probably lost up to 10 sec.

12) Crossed over and took the trail above 12. Ran on it until I luckily looked around at the perfect time and saw the control to my right.

13) Crossed over using the bends in the trails as guides for where approximately I was.

14) Followed the strip of rough open with occasional trees NW until there was a trail to the right which I took that led to a disc golf basket which I used as an attackpoint to leave the trail and continue straight over to the control.

15) My original plan was to run over and go on the trail coming from the first paved platform and run on it until the NW corner where I'd cut over to the field with trees and run down to 15, but I failed to notice that the trail was coming off a paced platform so soon and missed it, so I ended up using the trail just after the stream to go NW to the field and get 15.

Overall I think I got lucky too many times. I should learn to navigate a little more carefully and to get faster at using my compass so I don't feel like I have to sacrifice using my compass for speed.

Climbed outdoors with Lucka before it got too cold- it was really really nice out there, we had a blast. Everything was on top rope (i mean, it's carderock). We started in a spot where we climbed a 5.6, another 5.6, and a 5.7-8; we tried to start on the 5.8 on the arrete, but that wasn't working at all, so we ended up starting at the beginning of the 5.7 that was to the right of it and sort of climbed where the rope led, so we were ending on the 5.8. I was thinking too much on that climb so my calves and all the little muscles around my ankles were dead.
Then we moved to a spot where there were a few climbs around 5.7 and 5.8, and I don't remember the exact grades of the two climbs we climbed there, but they were around a 5.7 or 5.8. I could feel the pain in my right calf from fatigue, but I did it.
