Control hanging and collecting at Achnasoul. Some of the forest had lots of fallen trees in (but still ok), but one really nice mature beech woodland part.

This was a relay simulation, mass start, some gaffling, men had some extra controls to keep people together. I ran with a GoPro to get some footage maybe for WOC promotion. It was all a bit of an effort for me "BGR shuffle" pace, but fortunately some controls were down in depressions, and I could just skirt round the sides (to get the best video shots obviously). All good fun.

Control hanging on Creag Leach for the Hungarian's middle distance WOC test race, which we were also running for some race practice. Beautiful forest.

Orienteering 1:01:15 [3] 5.93 km (10:20 / km) +230m 8:39 / km

Control hanging in Achtemarack. Slopping orienteering from me, not helped by the new extraction lanes (but that is just an excuse).

Spending the week in Inverness area helping control hanging etc. with the SEDS / GBR team on a training camp. Today was at Achilty, one of the WOC model areas. I hung half the loop and continued round the rest. Once you got up the hill it felt like a beautifully remote wilderness area, semi-open, fairly heavy going in the heather. The fastest bits were what were mapped with green undergrowth screen but were actually dead bracken.

Run in the Lakes with Gwynn. Parked at Honister pass, ran over to Wasdale via Moses Trod, then round BGR leg 4. Thought if I'm going to do this thing then maybe I ought to recce some of it. And some of these hills I don't think I'd ever been up before. Glorious weather, lovely day out. Nice steady pace, although Gwynn was grumbling a bit, think his calf was hurting. Almost felt like I could have done another 5 hours. Came across a few other BGR teams, usually conspicuous as a group of four, three of them with sacs, and the one without looking the most knackered. But they all seemed on course for their targets so everyone was happy. Saw Steve Birkinshaw too, he was running round in circles blowing a hunting horn every now and then, most odd.

Running 47:41 [3] 9.54 km (5:00 / km) +187m 4:33 / km

Easy run in Houghall. Calves a bit tight, and right Achilles aching (probably as a result) but it loosened off during the run.

Running race 7:32:00 [3] 59.2 km (7:38 / km) +3000m 6:05 / km
shoes: Inov-8 MudClaw 265 blue

Old County Tops - Langdale, Hellvelyn, Scafell Pike, Coniston Old Man, Langdale. Pairs race, running with Jim. An epic day out. GPS doesn't tell full story as it ran out of juice round about Coniston, a bit like me. Jim was running well and I was hanging on till Cockley Beck, but then faded up the hill from there. We had been with another team in 3rd/4th place, but they got away, then another two teams came past. But I managed to carry on steadily to the finish. Fairly pleased with 6th anyway. It is after all probably the longest run I have ever done.

Running 5:19:09 [3] 34.66 km (9:12 / km) +2096m 7:04 / km
shoes: Inov-8 MudClaw 265 blue

Running first leg of Paddy Buckley Round in Snowdonia. Starting at Capel Curig, Moel Siabod, Moelwyns, Cnicht and finishing at Nantmor car park. Jim was going for the whole thing, I was just helping out on first leg. Fairly miserable weather, a bit windy and wet, although the worst was maybe the rain over the previous days meaning the bogs were very wet. I felt tired, having been ill with cold for a week and a half, and Jim was leading the way most of the time (but then he knew were all the trods were having recced it). He eventually pulled away up Cnicht, and disappeared into the mist, and finished 10 mins before me.

DFR - warm up

Running race 40:00 [4] 8.01 km (5:00 / km) +150m 4:34 / km
shoes: Inov-8 MudClaw 265 blue

DFR Andy'cap plus warm-down. Feeling a bit rough as first run out after being ill. But only 10s slower than last time I did this a year ago, and I think I was pushing quite hard then, so I'm fairly happy.
