10x 400m (80sec)

Lovely weather to begin with, then poured down from reps 5-9 making the inside lane into a massive puddle. Alternated the lead with Kirstin which worked really well.

Local event in Dunbar
Bit scrappy on the first 3 controls in the caravan park. I thought at the time it was just badly mapped sprint area on a forest map but probably didn't help that the paths had been taken off the map. I thought they'd just done this on the Spike Island section!
Once on the dunes I was going well, pretty easy course. But nice to run fast.

Hills with Tess - 6mins, 5mins, 4mins, 3mins
Started halfway up Castro, up to the saddle then up the tourist track steps. Pretty brutal considering I don't think I've ever done hill ints longer than 90sec or many hilly runs over the past year.

Lovely very early morning run along Derwent Edge (had already been up for 2.5 hours by this point!). Ran to the trig point at Back Tor, then it started raining quite heavily so hid in a cave before running back to Wheel Stones in time to watch Jonny zooming past :)

Spent the rest of the day driving to various locations to support Jonny (the excitement to see a mandarin was hilarious!) and go for small walks while we waited. He did extremely well :)

Travelling down to Sheffield to support Jonny in the ultra tomorrow.

shoes: Mizuno Enigma 2

Sprint qual simulation in Bo'ness with Kirstin, Tess and Jenny. Very very rusty and lungs hurt trying to run fast after doing very little running in the last few weeks. Good fun though.

Running 15:03 [2] 2.54 km (5:56 / km) +75m 5:10 / km
shoes: Mizuno Enigma 2

Getting lost trying to get back to the car.

Orienteering 7:14 [3] 1.16 km (6:13 / km) +26m 5:36 / km
shoes: Mizuno Enigma 2

3x first leg practice in a tricky housing estate where the houses were all at diagonals instead of the standard grid. Wasn't very focused and faffed about a lot, not doing very good orienteering. But it was fun anyway.

Walking 3:41:21 [0] 14.87 km (14:53 / km) +171m 14:05 / km

Original plan had been to climb Ben Nevis via the CMD arete route from the south. But we'd decided halway through yesterday that we were too exhausted for that so opted for the easy stroll down Glen Nevis valley forestry tracks to Fort William.

Got to Fort William at lunch time and spent the next 2 hours in Wetherspoons eating a huge amount of food.

Walking 8:36:51 [0] 28.9 km (17:53 / km) +1673m 13:52 / km

Woke up early again and after the second attempt at porridge (Jonny spilt the first one!) we had packed up and headed off at 7.40am again. Easy stroll down through the Lost Valley to begin with, exploring amongst all the massive boulders. Then a long slog along marshy tracks up to the West Highland Way and Devils Staircase. Super fast track through to Kinlochleven so we were making quick progress, helped by the temptation of a nice warm lunch.

Lunch ended up being fairly average but it was warm and nice to sit down for a while. Stocked up on supplies at the shop before slowly making our way up the valley towards the next munros. Halfway up the valley the back of my foot started hurting a lot from the shoe pressing on it and I was struggling to walk properly. This combined with the fact we still had 10km and 1000m climb to do with the rain getting heavier meant I was not in a good mood at all and just wanted to go back to the warmth of Kinlochleven. But we decided to keep going and Jonny kindly took my bag and coaxed me up the hill with a supply of sugar. The panadol kicked in and by the time we reached the saddle I was feeling a lot happier so we powered up the final climb to Stob Coire a Chairn (Munro #5). Steep drop and rocky climb up to An Gearanach (Munro #6) and we were finally on the final descent into Glen Nevis valley.

This was an incredibly steep descent with many zigzags and again my knees seized up, so was very relieved to finally make it to the bottom. Set up camp on the dry riverbed in front of Steall Waterfall. Then after some dinner we settled in to the tent as it was constant drizzle all evening.

Walking 8:04:22 [0] 17.02 km (28:27 / km) +1747m 18:48 / km

Woke up really early (6am) and both of us were quite restless so we ended up packing up and beginning our hike at about 7.40am. Fairly gentle climb to begin with to reach the top of Sgorr Nam Fiannaidh (Munro #1).

Cloud kept blowing in/out to reveal awesome rocky ridges and valleys on either side of us. We were a bit worried about doing the Aonach Eagach ridge as neither of us like heights or have much climbing experience. But it was actually fine (not sure if that was just cos we couldn't see the steep drops through the cloud!). Mostly just a hassle trying to climb up/down rocks with our heavy packs. Finally reached Meall Dearg (Munro #2) for a quick photo and some muesli bar. Then across to Am Bodach and the long descent down into Glencoe Valley. My knees really didn't like the steepness of this descent so it was long and painful.

Stopped for lunch in the valley under a bridge as it was raining before beginning the second half to our walk. It was a long climb up to Bidean nam Bian (Munro #3) but luckily the sun was out and actually got quite warm. Then across to Stob Coire Sgreamhach (Munro #4) for my first cloud-free munro!! :)

Finally we dropped down into the Lost Valley to set up camp. My knees were hurting again so Jonny took my bag so we could move faster as the rain had begun to set in. Both of us were very tired, cold and hungry so we quickly changed into warm clothes and ate dinner under a rocky overhang before settling into the tent.

Walking 1:22:39 [0] 3.78 km (21:52 / km) +689m 11:26 / km

Evening hike from Glencoe up to our campsite on the saddle between Pap of Glencoe and Sgorr Nam Fiannaidh (about 700m high). Rain slowly cleared as we got higher and ended up being a lovely still evening overlooking Glencoe and Loch Leven.

Straight up Arthurs Seat with Jonny, practicing some scrambling/rock climbing in my new shoes before the weekend. Then down to Duddingston and across to Cameron Toll. My leg got quite sore just after Duddingston so had to stop and walk a bit :(
