Mallards Pike

Pretty fun area with some lovely patches of forest and many, many tiny ditches. Was mostly running okay except for some bigger time losses at 9 and 10. Caught up to John Embrey at 4 and managed to sneak away from him going to 6. But then he caught me again at 10 after my mistakes which was annoying. Burnt him off on the track to 11 though as I was finally out of the slippery mud and could run fast again!
Just seemed to be leaking time from not being aggressive enough through the terrain and a bit hesitant picking out the ditches. About 45secs down on Sarah Rollins.

Southern Night Champs - Caerwent

This was an awesome area for night orienteering! An old army ammunition storage facility with loads of bunkers, earth banks and roads with grazed grass in between meaning it was super fast. First 5 controls were like a sprint course then we headed up into the very brambly horrible forest for 4 controls. Had to cross a ruined fence on the way to 6 which was very high and un-ruined at the place I tried to cross it, so ended up ripping my new tights :( Took it cautiously through here as I knew lots of time could be lost on the forest controls.
Back in the fun stuff for the rest of the course. Starting to tire quite a lot at this point and made a few silly decisions. Mainly on 15 where I lost count of how many buildings I'd been past so tried to cut into the green forest instead of the white.

Quick blast around the village.

Was planning on cycling but discovered a 1cm long spike in my tyre which took quite a while to change. So went bouldering and running instead.

Pairs relay with Jonny at The Hawth.

Had to place a flag at A then pick up Jonny's flag at B and carry on to the next A control (×12). Fun for the first 7 controls then went into the really green and brambly part and couldn't tell which depressions were mapped, couldnt find the tiny tracks and got in a grump!

SE Long Champs - Hankley Common

This was fun. Nice patches of forest that reminded me of Australian spur/gully as well as some sandy pine forest like NZ. Then some utter grot which put me right back in England again!
Course was pretty easy with lots of running on paths and ducking in to get controls. Still the odd pit/erosion gully that required a bit of meerkating for though.

Big adventure in the misty rain. Along the Downs to Lewes, down to the coast, along the Undercliff Walkway then back up and over through Stanmer and Ditchling Beacon. A nice mix of road, tracks, hills, fun grassy descents and coastal cliffs.

Kent Night Cup - Scotney Castle

One of my rare ventures into night orienteering for the year. Can't say it was a pleasant experience. Got really car sick and ended up throwing up on the way there and back so was feeling pretty grim running. Then was struggling with the headlamp as it couldn't be adjusted towards my feet, so ended up running with it halfway down my nose in order to tilt it. Chose a poor route and ended up spending far too long bashing through green forest trying to find tiny pits. Had to abandon one control as I just could not find it, and the earthbanks alongside the track weren't there so wasn't even sure if I was looking in the right place.

South Downs Way east from Ditchling. First 10mins with Jonny. Was going to go up to the trig at Blackcap but got scared of all the cows. Put in a bit of effort on the way back and was feeling pretty good. Then a detour at the end up to Ditchling Beacon just to link up the sections of South Downs Way that I've done (which is very little but seemed silly to have a 200m gap!).

PWT Race - Stavsjö Resort
3rd

First 8 controls were any order in the chalets. Think I chose a pretty good route (although should've done 31 first). Saw Charlotte as I was approaching 10 so knew I had a 20sec lead on her but lots of easy running in the second half which I knew I would lose lots of time on. Finished 3sec ahead of Caroline and Charlotte and managed to sneak onto the podium as Natalia missed a control in the first part. Nice!

PWT Race - Beijing Rose Gardens
7th

Was expecting it to be more like the warm up map with lots of intricate flower beds so was a bit flustered going to 2 through all the forest. Didn't really make any navigation errors apart from 12 and 13 but was running like a pansy through the terrain so Cecilie caught me going to 17. Then just tried to hang on to the finish but was really struggling with breathing by then. Finished feeling frustrated...just want to be back running normally again!

PWT Race - Beijing Expo Forest Park
9th

Quite a cool hilly park with some nice patches of forest. Really struggled with my breathing throughout, already feeling like it was out of control on the way to the 1st control. Had to stop a couple of times towards the end as I just wasn't getting enough oxygen in and wheezing quite a lot. Definitely could have saved some time if I'd known to cross some of the green/small cliffs as well.

Note
(rest day)

Spent 4 hours walking round Chongqing with 4 Chinese girls, Oskar and Caroline for the City Race. Quite entertaining with limited communication and controls not being where they were marked on the maps...we found out about halfway through that there was extra clues written in Chinese for where the controls were (eg. A specific cafe in a shopping mall) or what activity we had to do at the control in order to punch it.
Stopped for food and sent 3 Chinese girls to get a close control while we ate. But they got carried away and got 3 more controls so at 1pm with 1 hour to go and about as long on the train to get to the finish, we had no idea where half our team was! Eventually got to them at 1.55pm and got a taxi back to the finish 50mins late! I don't think they minded too much and they seemed to enjoy it.

This was great fun! At an indoor/outdoor museum with a scale of 1:2000 for outdoors and 1:1000 for indoors. Made a couple of mistakes with the levels at 3 and 10 but besides that I adapted pretty quickly to the map. Qualified for the final (top 6) so was pretty stoked with that!

PWT Race Big Final (Chasing Start) - Chongqing Industrial Museum
5th

Chasing start so I went off in 5th place, a massive 90sec down on Tereza but only about 15sec down on Lone and Sara so had a chance to move up a couple of places. Course was 3 loops so on my own the whole way. Although did briefly see Tereza ahead of me on one of the loops which was very useful as she ran up a passageway which I hadn't even seen on the first race and was a much faster route back to the pivot control! Came into the pivot for the final time as Lone was sprinting in from the other side, but couldn't quite close the gap and pass before the finish.
