Tiomila - Leg 3 for RR

Started off with Anni-Maija Fincke and a couple of other girls. Took the track routes for first 2 controls and was already struggling with the pace. Just felt completely flat even running out to the start triangle. We all messed up 3 (too far right) and I was very slow to react when everyone turned around to find the control. As a result I was playing catch up all the way along the long leg to 4. Managed to get onto the back of the group when they all slowed to a walk approaching the control. Probably about 15 girls together at this point, all strung out in a line about 30secs long, with me hanging on at the back. Stuck in for a few controls until the 9th when suddenly the chain was broken and I was left with only 2 other girls.

We very slowly made our way across to 10, getting a bit confused halfway along the leg. Then got caught by another pack on the way to 11. Really suffering by this point but was determined I was going to stay with this pack to the finish. Made a real effort not to be the last runner in the pack this time and was glad when the pace kept slowing to a walk approaching the controls.

Had one moment when I got flicked right in the eyeball with a branch and my eye went completely blurry for about a minute. Had to stop for a few seconds then just blindly try to make out the coloured shirts in front of me and follow them until I could see again.

Was very grateful for the fast running across the field and track to the last control so that I could push up into the middle of the pack and ensure our next runner went out with the group. Happy just to have survived my first long race in several years!

Suvi and Meg had great runs on the last 2 legs to pull us up to 38th, which is the best result the club has had for a few years so everyone was pretty happy :)

Jogging round some controls on a training map. Legs feeling quite tired after all the sitting in planes/cars.
Found the terrain pretty hard. Quite rocky underfoot and really hard to decipher what was going on in the flat parts on the tops of the hills.

Sprintelope - Edinburgh South

Couple of small mistakes at 7 when I overran the road junction and 18 when I changed my route to go right after running 10m to the left. Rest was all pretty straightforward and flowing nicely. With the novelty of running straight past my flat in the middle of the course.

5x sprintervals - Selby

Mass start ungaffled courses with lots of artificial barriers, probably too many in places as it was a bit of a labyrinth.
First 2 went well around the housing estate.
Leg 1 on the 3rd one was super long with loads of barriers. Thought I'd chosen a good route but had to modify it as I didn't notice several barriers on the map. Then my new route was blocked off by a giant wall so had to go way round and was a long way behind at this point so just jogged the rest.
Legs getting really tired by this point so took the 4th one pretty easy and gave up on the 5th when my route was blocked by another wall.

Map memory - Malton

Legs and brain absolutely dead by this point so decided to jog slowly round a few loops doing map memory with Jonny. But we made it into a competition to make it more fun.
I had 2 long, hard legs on the first two loops so had to look at the map twice and also ran through 2 barriers. Then made sure that Jonny had the hardest legs for the last loop and he managed to lose 5 points so I won overall :)

Pre-running the JWOC selection race at York Uni

Really cool area and tricky planning. A bit slow to get into it both physically and navigationally, but got going well towards the end. Running fast, but not all out.

Knockout Sprint QF - York Uni
Runner choice

I chose the best choice (along with Charlotte) but didn't execute it well as I stopped at 2 for a long time trying to work out if the control was on the stairs or open area. So ended up approaching 5 as Alice was leaving it. Pushed hard through the next controls chasing after Charlotte and thought we were approaching the finish only to realise there was another whole loop to do. Jogged it in from here knowing that I was safe in 3rd place.

Knockout Sprint SF - York City Centre (North)
Runners Choice

All 3 choices were very similar lengths this time, but I went for the easiest running one as I could memorise the routes before we even started. Kirstin also chose this one and we reached the common control at 4 in the lead. Unfortunately got caught out by a closed gate here, allowing Alice to get in front. Followed Alice through the next few controls whilst planning ahead for the long leg. Only one good option in the end so we all went the same way. Hit the busy alleyways a fair bit down on Alice and in front of Kirstin/Charlotte so just cruised it into the finish whilst trying to avoid all the people.

Knockout Sprint Final - York City Centre
No forking

York city centre on a very warm Saturday evening meant it was absolutely heaving with people, making the tight alleyways a mission to get down.
Leading on the way to 1 but over-ran the junction so was a long way down already. Really wasn't enjoying trying to navigate through all the people so just jogging along. Put in a bit of an effort for a few controls when I caught up to Kirstin, but managed to get away at 9 so jogged into the finish.
Would be a great area without any people!!

20x 30:30 with Kirstin.
Warm and windy this time. Was on the verge of getting a stitch for most of this so breathing was quite bad. Legs wouldn't move on the last reps so I was very glad when Kirstin said we only had 3 left, after I'd misheard her saying we were halfway through.

Running race 4:59 [5] 1.5 km (3:19 / km)
shoes: Asics Spikes Green

Ran a 1500m at a small open meet just for the fun of it. Was supposed to be in a heat with about 5 other girls and the u17/senior men, but ended up only being me and a vet lady. So once the boys sped off it was a very lonely race.
Actually felt surprisingly good throughout the race and paced it really well. Felt like I held my form the whole way and could even pick up the pace a bit in the last 100m. Goal was to try and get sub 5 and managed to do it, just. Also only 1sec slower than my pb!
Would've been interesting to see if I could go much faster with some competition. Although I think I run better alone sometimes as I get stressed out running at other people's paces.

Splits on finish line - 58, 2.17, 3.39, 4.59

Sprint training #1 - Livingston
Plan was to take the first 7 controls hard through the buildings, then jog the rest with some map memory.
Printing was terrible and could barely read anything in the housing estate as the gaps between buildings weren't visible. So lots of standing still and taking terrible routes. Had enough by this stage so jogged to 8 then gave up.

Orienteering 13:23 [3] 2.89 km (4:38 / km) +12m 4:32 / km
shoes: Mizuno Enigma 3

Sprint training #2 - Livingston
This one was slightly better as the housing estate was more open. Tried to do the building controls faster, easy in between. Still took some bad routes, not navigating very well at all. Feeling strong physically though, when I could open out and run fast.

JK Relay - Beaudesert
5th

Running 1st leg for ESOC team with Jo Stevenson and Rona.

Started out steadily as all the juniors sprinted off the start line, but hit my number 1 in the lead. Took a very wiggly route to 2 as I didn't want to leave the path as the forest looked gross so ended up behind everyone.

Then messed up 4 soo badly. Dropped too far right and ended up searching all the green blobs in the open area. Didn't even realise we were in the open as there were trees everywhere. Initially thought I might have stopped on the spur too early but finally figured out we were too low and trudged up the hill to find the control just behind Alice. Losing 3mins in the process... :(

Rest of the course went fine. Worked well with Alice and felt like we were making some progress, but every time we got close to the pack in front it seemed like they had a shorter split and got away again. Absolutely lost the will to continue trudging back up the hill to the final few controls. Breathing started to go and was completely struggling to get any oxygen whilst slipping backwards in all the mud. Found a slight second wind when we reached the runnable field at the top to make sure I outsprinted Alice and Kayla, handing over in 11th place (3:42mins behind, but only 1:26 behind 3rd).

Jo has an absolute flyer with the fastest 2nd leg time to send Rona out in 3rd place!!! But up against very tough opponents with Jess, Holly, Tessa and Meg! Rona had a great run to finish in 5th place, only 40secs off 3rd place!!
