SoSOL 2 - John Muir Country Park
Ran the green so that it wasn't too long and I could try to push the pace a bit. Really enjoyed running somewhere new. Didn't do very well in the dunes, struggling to make sense of the vague contours. Then raced Jonny for a couple of controls before returning to the forest.

3 days in a row would definitely have been pushing it. And considering an Urban was what broke me in the first place...I sat this one out :)

shoes: Mizuno Enigma

Orienteering race 22:12 [4] 4.5 km (4:56 / km) +50m 4:40 / km
shoes: Mizuno Enigma

Armagh Sprint Qual
Didn't really feel like I got into this race at all. Legs felt cold through the first controls and was struggling to run on the slippery moss. 10secs lost to 1 running along the wrong wall. Then lost 1min to 10 which was super annoying as I had actually read the description for this one and still got it wrong! (I blame my inner compass being off due to being in NZ...kept thinking north was south the entire time :P ) Absolute slog up the hill and to the finish. Ended up winning the heat, as Fanni messed up 10 as well.

Running (Warm Down) 9:00 [2] 1.5 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Enigma

3 PM

Running (Warm Up) 10:00 [2] 2.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Enigma

Orienteering race 17:40 [4] 3.8 km (4:39 / km) +70m 4:15 / km
shoes: Mizuno Enigma

Armagh Sprint Final
Really enjoyed this. Nothing really too tricky except for number 2 which I nailed, and lost 15sec on 11 where I was too busy chasing and not reading enough detail in the circle.
Caught up to Fanni at number 2, then it was just a case of trying to hang on for as long as I could. Which was until about control 8. Ended up in 2nd, 1.10mins down on Alice who absolutely beasted it.

Running (Warm Down) 7:00 [2] 1.2 km (5:50 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Enigma

shoes: Mizuno Enigma

Armagh Night Mass Start sprint - Planetarium
Started in 4 waves with both men and women beginning with a score course (5/7 controls), then one of the running loops, some butterfly loops in the Planetarium, back to the other running loop and a few normal controls to finish.
I started with Alice, Niamh and Emma but after the score controls I didn't see them at all. Just trying to chase after some of the men. Caught sight of Alice in the last couple of controls so pushed fairly hard to stay in front.
Super fun! Nice mix of school, park and forest terrain. Did rather well considering I'd only arrived from NZ 24 hours beforehand.

Running (Warm Down) 5:48 [2] 0.98 km (5:56 / km) +24m 5:17 / km

Orienteering (Warm Up) 8:30 [2] 1.62 km (5:15 / km) +16m 5:00 / km
shoes: Mizuno Enigma

Massey Uni (Palmy) - Map memory controls for a short warm up.

Orienteering 7:44 [4] 1.91 km (4:03 / km) +21m 3:50 / km
shoes: Mizuno Enigma

First control practice. 9 sections of map that had been orientated to different angles with 1 control on each snippet. Stopped for ~30sec between each.

Orienteering 23:03 [3] 4.44 km (5:11 / km) +44m 4:57 / km
shoes: Mizuno Enigma

Ran the Wellington Champs sprint from 2014.
Split it into 3 intervals of 6 controls each, with a 90sec rest in between.
Took a couple of different route choices from last time just to make it more interesting. Running super slowly and finding it hard to maintain the pace for a decent length of time. Think I was 40seconds slower than last time, even with the breaks in the middle. But I was super fit back then so it is to be expected.
(On closer look I was 27sec slower in 1st rep, 10sec in 2nd rep, 3sec in 3rd rep....which is odd as I definitely felt like I got a lot slower with each rep).

Running (Warm Down) 6:04 [2] 1.08 km (5:38 / km) +9m 5:24 / km

Much more confident on the downhill this time and was a fair bit faster.

SOW Middle - Waikaia
Absolutely loved this area! The rocks in the beginning were a bit like in Czech, then a more detailed green valley and some mining at the end.
Started much too fast and nailed the first 7 controls, catching up to Greta and Lara. Then my brain went into oxygen debt and took a very wide route to 8, as well as not being able to find the right knoll in the control circle so lost about 2mins to Lizzie (although she was the only one that actually managed to find this control straight away...)
Ended up climbing the wrong hill to 9 but don't think it lost me too much time (30sec). Managed to catch back up to Greta at 14, then just struggling to keep up with her/push on to the finish.

Orienteering 32:23 [4] 2.65 km (12:13 / km) +117m 10:01 / km
shoes: VJ Bolds - Yellow

SOW Long - Waikaia
Ran the first 4 controls, then walked back through 15-19. Struggled to get in the right mindspace as I knew I wasn't going to do the whole course so got lazy with the navigation and made 2 big mistakes...1 while running (#4), 1 walking (#16). Haven't run on 1:15000 very much at all in the last year so that was a bit of a challenge, kept stopping far too early. Absolutely loved the area though! Had 2 robins hop up right next to my feet whilst I was stopped at one point, with not another person in sight.

Running (Warm Up) 13:22 [2] 2.59 km (5:10 / km) +40m 4:48 / km

Orienteering race 36:22 [4] 3.63 km (10:02 / km) +32m 9:36 / km
shoes: VJ Bolds - Yellow

SOW Short - Twelve Mile Delta
A Chris Forne course so it was tough, but lots of fun! Going well at the beginning apart from running to a control in the clearing next to mine at 6. Then caught up to Greta, Lara and Jula on the flat and got a bit distracted by them at times so was a bit wobbly through the controls. Fitness definitely lacking as they would run away from me on any fast open bits, but I could usually catch up again once it got more technical and by taking better lines.

Friday Feb 3, 2017 #

Note

Tunnel bridge and fossil lookout before picking up Dad at the airport. Then drove out to Brighton beach where we had lots of fun climbing in the rocks between each little section of beach. Then steep walk down to Tunnel Beach and exploring the Otago Museum.

Thursday Feb 2, 2017 #

Note

Walked to Jack's blowhole, Catlins river run then went to the Lost Gypsy Gallery which had all these cool gadgets that you wound the handle and different things would happen. Had a late lunch then drove up to Nugget Point where we saw baby seals playing about in the rock pools. Then waited for 2.5 hours for a Yellow Eyed Penguin to turn up!!
11 AM

Running 39:30 [3] 5.16 km (7:39 / km) +70m 7:10 / km
shoes: Mizuno Enigma

Ran part of the Catlins River-Wisp track. Got dropped at Frank's Creek then ran back down to Tawanui. Amazing native bush, uneven single track and not a person in sight.

Wednesday Feb 1, 2017 #

Note

Saw the fossilised forest at Curio Bay, then went across to Porpoise Bay and managed to luck out and see 5 dolphins playing about in the waves :) Then lots of small walks to Slope Point, Cathedral Cave, Macleans Falls and Purakaunui Falls, and finally an estuary walk from our campground in Pounawea.
