Hanging flags at Soft Rock. Was out for 2 hours. I love this place. It is always stunningly beautiful here, and I get it to myself nearly every time. We just need more of it.

MYOP / Ursa Minors Day 1 (Blue Mountain)

This was awesome! All the kids and parents and coaches were on time, and the weather was great. We had 13 kids and five coaches.

We hiked up the hill to the start/finish and started with some fun name games and icebreakers. (20 minutes)

I then introduced orienteering as a an activity and a sport and talked about the goals for our six-week program. (5 minutes)

We then talked about maps and map symbols and figuring out how to orient the map based on the terrain features around you. (15 minutes)

We then broke up into group, and each group walked/jogged/ran a mini-course, going through the basics of what you do at each control, including e-punching, checking codes, turning your map, and making a basic plan for the next control. (15 minutes)

Then all the kids got to run other mini-courses (we had five in total), running as many as they could. They really got into it! The courses were about 500-600m with 4-5 controls each. Some kids liked re-running a course, but most wanted to do as many as they could. Most managed three courses, a few did four. It was really fun to watch! (25 minutes)

Then - snacks and walking back to the cars. (10 minutes)

Really good first session. I am psyched about the group of kids we have, and about our coaching team. Thanks everyone for your advice and ideas!

We are starting GrizO's youth program (kids aged 11-15) this Thursday (unofficial working title Ursa Minors). I have some thoughts on how to run this first session, but I am curious: what would YOU do on the first day of a six-week orienteering after-school program? We have 14 kids signed up.

Intervals with Run Wild Missoula. There was a group of about 40 runners at the U of M track. We were coached by Courtney Babcock, former Canadian Olympian. The workout was 6x600 + 4x200. We did a good session of drills and strides beforehand.
I ended up being towards the second half of the faster group and stayed there for the whole workout. It was really great to run with people!

Looking at OUSA's club charter numbers for 2021, and feeling pretty proud of what GrizO has been able to accomplish in a very short time period: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TmBV9yX_Ym...
