Orienteering race 33:55 [4] 5.84 km (5:48 / km) +48m 5:35 / km

Tahoe Relay - GrizO's first-ever relay team. We ran Greg Friedman - myself - Greg Balter in the men's elite class.

(In case anyone is wondering, Greg B is a dues-paying GrizO member, has flown out to Missoula twice, attended our events, and made maps for us. So it's certainly legit.) Greg F. is an ultra-runner who came to our Lubrecht event in May and has attended every event since, as well as a few training sessions with me.

The relay was delayed for a while, and I announced the long awards while we waited. Inara was happily playing with Oriana, Caroline, and Siri, who were total rock stars with her. She then hung out with James and Emmett too, which was great to see.

Balter held several coaching sessions with Greg F ahead of time, teaching him the art of leading off a relay. Greg executed to virtual perfection. He went through the spectator control as the 4th Men's/Women's Elite (same courses) team, down just a minute on Joe B. He had a bit more trouble on the last loop and handed over to me in 7th, a few seconds behind QOC women and Truckee, and about a minute down on the main target - Cascade, with Tyra running second.

A surge of adrenaline (relays! wooo!) got me past QOC and Truckee on the way to the start triangle, and I had to calm myself going into 1. It looked tricky on the map, and I made sure to hit the rocks ahead of it and slow down. Hit 1 ok and caught sight of Tyra on a different forking. We had the same 2, and I passed her on the way to it, getting there just a few seconds ahead. Then the wheels came off - I went way off line to 3, lost a couple of minutes, and was caught by Tyra again.

At this point I was pretty beat, and it was somewhat of a slog the rest of the way, though I managed to stay fairly clean, except for a bobble on the way to 7. I ended up exchanging in third, behind the unassailable super team of Keegan-AJ-Greg A and also behind Michael L's team, and with Cascade and DVOA close behind.

This made for an exciting final leg, where Balter passed the arena two minutes ahead of a hunting Will, and another minute ahead of Sam running for DVOA. Will was too strong and determined in the end, but Greg held off DVOA for an excellent third place for GrizO's first-ever relay! What a blast!

US middle champs, after a 4.5 hour smoke-related delay.

I started very well, but couldn't hold it and came unglued on #9, losing about 4 minutes. Ok from there, but just very slow. Ended up 7th once again, 10 minutes behind Michael.
