US Sprint Champs

I flew to New York on Thursday, had a nice dinner with my friend Tim who picked me up at JFK, and then spent the night at Balter's, managing to get a few hours of restless sleep. After some adventures, we drove up to Lake George in the morning with Greg and Sergei, in time for the start.

My legs felt heavy during the warm-up, and that did not change during the race. I felt like I was running in a fog and just going through the motions in my orienteering. I did not feel like I had any real problems, but I did lose a lot of time zig-zagging and being uncertain on the way to 14. Even if I knew I was not feeling strong, I was still surprised by how far behind I ended up, over a minute behind Ross, and 6th American (including Ross). Ulrik Nielsen's time was particularly impressive: http://www.usof-rankings.org/ev_show.php?show=cls&...

Running 33:15 [2] 5.62 km (5:55 / km) +83m 5:31 / km
shoes: 2013 Asics White+Blue

Got home from Stockholm and went out for a run to meet Alli, who was finishing up her monster 15km effort through NĂ¥sten. I missed her the first time, but met up with her on the way back out and ran back home with her after a stop at KG.

Thierry put up this training on the training bank, and there is no way I could stay away: http://goo.gl/ZjIx5

There was a contours-only version too, but I was too weak for that. The first orienteering part went well: good focus, nice even tempo. Then the corridor started really well, but I made a parallel error about halfway through and got totally confused. Apparently everyone else did too, as we (me, Albin, Liutas, two Spanish national team guys) were spread out, each standing on his own hilltop trying to figure out where we are). Eventually relocated and continued.

The next part with controls was fine too - really fun orienteering, just running and enjoying myself and loving Lunsen, breathing in the familiar summer smell of Swedish swamps. I decided to skip the last corridor and find the last three controls. Found 23 and 24, and then my brain just stopped working. Trying to get from 25 to finish, I somehow got completely turned around and ended up meandering through the woods until hitting the road to the southwest (!!) of the parking area. Oops.

Still a gorgeous day on one of the best maps in the world with some fine company.
6 PM

Running 15:47 [2] 2.83 km (5:34 / km) +33m 5:16 / km
shoes: 2013 Asics White+Blue

Jogging to the start, chatting with Thierry and the Spanish guys Antonio and Andreu.

Orienteering 6:00 [5] 1.47 km (4:06 / km) +21m 3:49 / km
shoes: 2013 Asics White+Blue

The first sprint, a forked mass start course. A big pack of people, so not too much orienteering, but lots of guts-out running. Good training.

Orienteering 16:36 [4] 3.97 km (4:11 / km) +8m 4:08 / km
shoes: 2013 Asics White+Blue

The second sprint. This was a reverse chase start, which meant I got to watch Thierry go by and got to see him orienteer for a couple of controls. Very impressive to see him pick his routes and get lots of information from very quick glances at the map at full speed.

Running 13:33 [2] 2.3 km (5:53 / km) +23m 5:37 / km
shoes: 2013 Asics White+Blue

Jogging back to KG with Annika.
