COC Ultimate Orienteer #1 - Bishop's Land, Central WA
RG:
http://rg.cascadeoc.org/rg2/#288&course=13&...Inara and I drove five hours to Quincy, WA for a weekend of races and hanging out. It was great. It was so fun to orienteer again at an event organized by someone else. It was easy to remember why I love this sport, and also easy to focus on my weaknesses in it.
But first, the positives:
1) It was fun, and I really enjoyed the terrain!
2) I managed to get into the map and terrain pretty well right from the beginning.
3) There were a number of legs that I executed well, especially in the middle, technical section.
Now, the negatives:
1) I lost focus on two of the longer legs (14, 15) and lost a bunch of time.
2) I made a number of bad decisions about what could and could not be climbed up or down, losing a bunch of time, especially on 4 and 15.
3) I had no extra gear - I felt like I was in zone 3 the entire time and couldn't increase my speed at all.
Will destroyed me by 15 minutes. A clean race would have had me about 7-8 minutes behind him, which is still a lot, but there is no good reason I should be any closer right now.
It was so much fun to race again - first races of any kind in nearly a year, and first ones with serious competition since the Georgia Navigator Cup in January 2020 - seemingly a lifetime ago.
Afterwards Sarah and I took Inara around the Beginner course and on an (unsuccessful) cactus search, and Inara got to drive Will's Tesla back to the event center. A good day!
