OLOU winter chase.

Started last 40ish seconds behind Ian and Ryan. Started pretty good. Quickly learned there was a lot of detail on the map and had to figure out what I could ignore.

Was a little confused in the area of 4. They had mapped a flood zone around the main stream in the area after the heavy rains, but most of the water had receded by the race so there wasn't as much water as i was expecting.

Overshot 5 on the rootstock.

Map exchange at 6

Messed up 9. Got close and got mixed up in all the trails and bridges and crossed a stream I shouldn't have. Relocated quickly and recovered ok. Lost maybe a minute. This is where I caught Ryan and Ian. They also messed up 9.

10-15 was some hard running chasing them. I got ahead of Ian for a moment at the map exchange at 13. He passed me again rignt before 14.

Passed Ian again near 16. We were very close until 18. Finally caught Ryan about 30 meters from the finish. He chose to go around a reentrant while I went down and back up.

Bruce finished about 1 second before I did. The handicaps were pretty good, I finished among several runners.

Ryan did punch finish before I did. I assumed the finish control would be Air, as the rest of the controls were, but it was not. So he punched finish as I was coming back to punch it after I realized it was not in Air mode.

Fun map and fun event.

Chase on the beginner course. Ian and I had the exact same time, but I had to start 30ish second after him. Caught Ryan right at the end again.

My favorite OCIN map.

Picked the wrong route to 1. Staying on the trail around was faster by a good bit, i went more straight. Hesitated a little in the circle, realized I was too close to the trail.

4 was more difficult than I thought it would be. I was looking for the big reentrant behind the depression and thought I was going way too far. Bailed to the road and confirmed I was not far enough yet and finally got it.

1-7 were so fun. I learned this area is "The Badlands"

Thought I had a good route to 8. It was basically road/trail until the ponds where there were options. I stayed on the trail, but if you stayed right I think you saved climb and was faster.

9 was ok, but had to relocate at the top of the ditch. There were so many ditches to choose from going up the hill and I picked the ditch 1 too far to the left. Lost maybe 20 seconds in the circle.

10 was not good. Got to the top of the ridge and was very confident in where I attacked back down for 10. Took me way too long to realize I went too far on the ridge. Went back uphill to attack 10 again. There I saw 10 was visible from the ridge and all I had to do was look down hill and I would've saw the control.

11, also not good. I decided straight was a good option across all the little Knolls and reentrants. It was not. Bailed uphill again and re attacked. Going high was the right move here

The rest was fairly straightforward, but fun to run fast (although not as fast as I thought i was going). The long leg to 16, I missed the first trail and ran along the stream for a few hundred meters. The trail was there and much faster.

Decent race with a few obvious things I can work on.

Getting back into it. Thought I missed all the rain, but got 100% soaked about half way through
