Today I ran the green course at Turkey Run Ridge. I did pretty well, except I made two big mistakes, mostly because I got tired in the middle. On my 3-4 leg, I tried to stay up high and contour on a ridge system instead of going down to walk along the flat riverbank, because I was afraid of losing altitude. This was was my worst mistake, because I ended up wandering on the ridges for probably 5-7 minutes, and then actually headed down to the riverbank anyway. After that, I found the control easily, and I was annoyed with myself for not going down to the river in the first place.
The second mistake was on the 4-5 leg, and it was less of an issue. I headed too far down a hillside and got into some green, and then spent some time trying to extricate myself. I should have noticed that I was going too far down and corrected right away.
For every control, I focused on two things: knowing the control code and the direction before entering the control circle (and so entering and exiting efficiently), and always having an attackpoint. I liked having specific goals to focus on, and I think those two goals in particular helped me to organize my thoughts before every leg, which was really helpful. It was like having a fresh start each time I finished a control.

I ran a yellow, pretty fast, after my main green course. I was pretty tired by then, so I skipped the last three controls, but it still felt good to go through everything quickly and not really have to think very hard. I felt super fast, too, because the map was on a 1:5000 scale, so all the distances were shorter!
