Orienteering race (SL4 MD) 51:18 intensity: (32 @1) + (5:53 @2) + (28:42 @3) + (16:04 @4) + (7 @5) **** 4.6 km (11:09 / km) +20m 10:55 / km

"Broulee Dunes". M60A / Course 4: 3.0km, +90m, 23c. 11th/21 (16:44 behind Roger Bourne). 18°C. TE 2.8.
Same map as yesterday but the course didn't go past the creek. Seemed a bit easier than yesterday. Possibly because I was better prepared, but more likely because the controls were closer together and I had less opportunity to go wrong.
#1 - Slow run from S through 200m of low vegetation before emerging on the main track. Confused by where exactly I was. Lost at least 2:45 on the track trying to find an AP then took a less optimum route along the ridge. #2-10 - Felt like I fluked the next few. #11 - Found 12 first (-1:30). #16 - Found 17 first (-2'). #22 - Overran rusted 44-gallon drum (-1:15). Total est time lost: 8:45.
Best leg: #17 (4th/21). Best pos: 8th/21 (#12-15).
After looking at the splits from both days, I was surprised how high I had moved up the placings (12th/8th), until a really bad leg forced me to tumble down again. Still think I should have gone to the Victorian MTBO weekend.

Orienteering race (SL3 MD) 1:10:06 intensity: (11 @1) + (6:34 @2) + (37:05 @3) + (17:59 @4) + (8:17 @5) ***** 5.89 km (11:54 / km) +14m 11:46 / km

"Broulee Dunes". M60A / Course 4: 3.1km, 16c. 20th/21 (39:00 behind Bjorn Mella). 17°C. TE 2.9.
Entire course set in a narrow belt of scrub between a long beach and an access track with a small ridge in between. Distinction between white & green areas was difficult to discern. 2.5m contours also a bit difficult to work out. Controls set on small knolls, shallow gullies or pits. Visibility not great until you actually were above a control. My main problem was not running far enough before looking for the AP. Did not enjoy this. Should have done the MTBO in Victoria instead.
#1 - Short of CP (lost 3:30). #7 - Short of CP (-6'). #8 - Too far left (-30"). #9 - Couldn't avoid getting my feet/shoes wet where the creek cuts the beach. OK. #11 - No idea where I was (-6'). #14 - This was a shocker - just as I thought I had got back on track. After leaving the track to look for 14 I thought I was still looking for 13. Obviously nothing matched up until I ran back towards 13. I was actually very close the second time (7' ago) but just missed it. Eventually relocated from a trampoline which I assumed was one of the black crosses (-13:30). Total est time lost: 29:30.
Best legs: #4, 16 (1st/21). Best pos: 12th/21 (#6).

Parramatta-Meadowbank Bridge loop (ACW). Collected the hybrid bike from the shop after a new cassette ($70 - Shimano HG50 10sp 11-36), chain ($40) and service ($95). Still need to get the L pedal repaired. Used flat pedals today which weren't much fun. Returned by the new bike path extension under the Macarthur Street bridge. It was probably finished months ago but I don't get down here much anymore. 23°C. TE 2.7

Wanted to up the distance slightly to 5km so planned to go just a little past Sams Creek track (2km). Decided to see where the upward track marked with a small cairn went. I emerged at the W end of Yallambee (0.2km, +42m) and followed the suburban roads back home, avoiding hard surfaces as much as possible. 22°C. TE 2.5.
