"Fassifern Ridge", Fennell Bay. Hard Medium: 4.9km, +200m, 16c. 16th/22 (46:31 behind Oskar Mella). 13°C. TE 4.8.
Not a runner's course. Lots of slow legs up, down and along contours. Areas mapped as runnable (white) weren't. Knee started out OK but got really sore on the slow traverse to #12. Painful driving home and on steps again. I thought it would be much better this week after my break. Very unfit and slow (felt old!).
#1 - Follow tape to Δ, then straight up. #2 - Tracks then compass down from junction. #3 - Down to track, cross and run to top of WCs. #4 - Follow the WC to track, then tracks to AP. #5 - Track to WC. #6 - Track to main road, then compass from telegraph pole. #7 - Tracks to bend, through green, across track to WC. #8 - Drifted 25m left on compass. Got sucked into to going more left (lost 4'). #9 - Circular route on tracks. #10 - Descended too much and missed AP (lost 4'). #11 - Compass. #12 - Contour from main track. Very slow, slipped a few times. Drifted a bit high (lost 1:30). #13 - Straight. #14 - More angular route to top of ridge than ideal, but OK. #15 - Track down, up at WC. #16 - Straight over ridge (walking down). #F - Bush too thick to run. Best legs: 5 (7th/22). Best pos: 8th (#2).
