Bike-orienteering, used's tonight Stag map and cycled to all the controls in my own order. Good fun, apart from lugging the bike up the steps to Park Circus!

Cumbernauld Urban MV course. Missed best route to the bridge for long leg 2 but safe enough (30s maybe). Hesitant 4 to 5 - best route was off the map so assumed I had to go through shopping centre instead. Steady through to 16, lost concentration and a few seconds overshooting there but helped me see route to 17, and ok to finish. 5th MV, just behind Walter but ahead of Dr John. 1201 BOF points and currently 3rd in urban league.

Pollok parkrun. Steady run, best time round Pollok for 2 years. PBs for Mary and her brother.

Orienteering race 54:25 [3] 7.88 km (6:54 / km)

Stag evening event at a damp Pollok Park. Solid run with only a few minor faffs around 'luxuriant foliage'. Strange download fail despite having cleared beforehand.

Hill Running 46:37 [3] 7.22 km (6:27 / km) +200m 5:40 / km

Ben Kenneth hill race, South Uist. 7th place (out of about 25 I think). Terrible conditions; driving rain, high tide, and mist at the top, so the organisers changed the route for safety. Swim across the estuary replaced by a longer run out to the bridge, and turning at a lower ridge below the summit. First k to the bridge was a fast 4.18 (in 10th place here) then the uphill was a battle through wet bog, with promising sheep tracks turning into rivers. Overtook a few on the uphill with good route choice, and held my position on the downhill despite getting slightly lost on the return to the bridge! Happy with that and now for a rest.

To and from the white/green start which I was organising (7am start) and to my own start.

Orienteering race 51:50 [3] 6.0 km (8:38 / km)

Day 6 Glen Feardar West. Did most of it well with only a few small misses, but mucked up one 'round a hill and traverse' control which cost me 4th place. 8th/24 on the day. Overall 9th place, a few places down on where I feel I should be. Too many mistakes this week.

Friday Aug 4, 2017 #

Orienteering race 55:07 [3] 5.9 km (9:21 / km)

Day 5 Glen Feardar East. Did alright round most of it, although feeling pretty tired. Lost 2 mins on a really short leg to a miniscule knoll, which was costly, with 3 people within 16 seconds ahead of me. 9th/26.

Up to the start, great views.

Orienteering race 49:41 [3] 5.9 km (8:25 / km)

Day 4 Braemar. More like it, steady pace and only one mistake (3mins) drifting slightly left at #7. But did a lot of legs well, spiked 3 perfectly on a traverse through deep heather, and safe routes on long legs to 4 and 6. 5th/25 today.

Slow walk to the start.

Orienteering race 1:08:00 [3] 6.3 km (10:48 / km)

Day 3 Birsemore. Had a few nightmares here before but taped up the blister and was running well, feeling good about myself spiking controls all the way through to #11 of 16 in 36mins and 7th place (only a bit of hesitation in getting south of a ravine before #2). Then disaster at #12, dragged too far wide left and low rounding a hill, tangled up in crags I shouldn't have been near, and suddenly in a rather quiet part of rocky forest. Found an elite control on a boulder but the whole area was boulders, and slow to relocate. Blew 10 minutes and had a climb to the control once I found it. Furious. Should have gone round the hill the other way. Plodded into the finish cursing a good run thrown away. For the final straw, caught my compass on a tree at the 2nd last and lost it in a pile of nettles. 12th/23.
