Orienteering 1:00:00 [3] 5.0 km (12:00 / km)

Dumyat FVO night-o. Another spectacular fail. Delayed by M74 blaze-related traffic and rushed out of car to start line, forgetting to change into o-shoes for mass start. No grip so couldn't compete and gave up half way round, jogged back for a bit of practice. Then couldn't find the pub FVO went to either.

Running 45:00 [3] 6.0 km (7:30 / km)

Mosshead intervals - 5 x 725m each - 3.36, 3.38, 3.42, 3.37, 3.12, plus warm up/down.

Orienteering race 1:07:50 [3] 5.6 km (12:07 / km) +90m 11:13 / km

Tinto Twin part 2 at Happendon Wood. Spiked 1 and 2, ok for 3 although higher than I was expecting, but then bombed on 4, drifting too far right round a lot of windblow then wasting 5 mins going round in circles. Lost impetus after this although mostly fairly steady, but not enjoying the wind and rain. Overcautious route to the last control. Well beaten by Patrick regardless of mistakes. 8th/23 on blue course.

Orienteering 15:00 [3] 1.5 km (10:00 / km)

Control collecting in miserable conditions. Struggled to find number 6 second time round!

Orienteering race 46:40 [3] 4.94 km (9:27 / km) +105m 8:32 / km

Tinto Twin night event at Carmichael Hill. Quite a battle in the wind and littered with small errors although no disasters. Low on 1, missed 2, low on 3 despite contouring round from crag, too low on 4, went to 6 en route to 5, puzzled by contours at 7 and cut up too early. But had a good clean second half. 4th on course/11. Curiously 1210 BOF ranking points, 2nd best in the last year!

Orienteering race 1:21:17 [3] 7.8 km (10:25 / km) +180m 9:21 / km

Race the Sandcastles Forvie Brown course. Woke up with sore throat and sair heid which may explain yesterday. Plodded round trying to be steady and did ok for most of it apart from a stupid 4 min error on the shortest leg no 9, where Patrick overtook me from way back (and Jet). Steady to the finish, happy to get round again as not well enough to really compete. 7th M40 overall for Race the Castles, beating 2 mispunchers.

Orienteering race 2:13:39 [3] 9.7 km (13:47 / km) +450m 11:11 / km

Race the Castles Balmoral Brown course. The big one, in more ways than one. Out so long my watch stopped, so 9.7k is straight line distance. Tough, steep, rocky, scenic terrain and everything seemed to stretch out on 1:15 map. Over-cautious left path route to 1, and to 2 via 5, but frustratingly then stopped short of 5 when looking for it down from 4 (3.5 mins lost). Safe slow route to 7 and so on although Alex in sight at 8 (from 8 mins down) and reached the spectator control in 91 mins which was about enough. Final loop was a bit of a slog with much walking up hills. Overtook Alex at 15 although messed up (4 mins) at 16 and was overtaken by a Clyde train including Patrick and Thomas. Happy to get round. Almost an hour behind Ida Bobach - under 2 hrs might have been respectable. Not feeling strong enough, maybe not enough rest earlier in the week.

Orienteering warm up/down 40:00 [1] 4.0 km (10:00 / km) +150m 8:25 / km

JOK chasing sprint to/from assembly

Orienteering race 35:43 [3] 4.0 km (8:56 / km) +80m 8:07 / km

JOK sprint prologue. Birsemore (have had nightmares here before). Very poor performance. Wandered about in circles looking for #2 for about 5 mins, missed 3 as well, went backwards out of 4, cut in too early for 5 (twice), got a tow to 6 from Graeme, ok on the last two. Way off the pace although three people within 2 mins. Very nice scenery though.

Orienteering race 48:05 [3] 4.4 km (10:56 / km) +150m 9:20 / km

JOK sprint chase. Surely couldn't be that bad again? No, abysmally, even worse. Leaving #2, thought I could see a rival ahead, failed to take a bearing and drifted way right (to the wrong side of the hill) and got very muddled. Various attempts to relocate later I completed that leg in 16 mins (is that a sprint record?) found 6 before 5, trudged up the hill to 7 struggling to make sense of anything on the ground and had pretty much given up as I jogged down to 8. To my surprise met Max Carcas here, who had messed it up big style too, and had a comical furious race with him to 9 and the finish control 10, where we dived together at the SI unit, he missed dibbing it first time, and I sneaked ahead of him. Lol. 9th overall MV out of 14 including a few mp.

Orienteering race 37:32 [3] 6.64 km (5:39 / km)

Stag night-o at Hogganfield, with a 3-control map memory twist at the end. Only one mistake on the main course, 3 seconds behind Alex. Fine on first two map memory controls, but had a poor plan for the last, and ran a long way round the perimeter.

Orienteering 31:24 [3] 4.03 km (7:47 / km)

Morskie Oko park in Warsaw, running an old sprint map from world-of-o with Scott. Some great dry Autumn leaves and only one map correction required.

Walking 5:00:00 [1] 30.0 km (10:00 / km)

Various walking around Warsaw

Orienteering race 1:04:52 [3] 10.6 km (6:07 / km) +240m 5:30 / km

Race the Castles Stirling. Quite an epic course. Tricky first section inside the castle, pleased to get the first 7 cleanly then made a hash of 8 (as did half the field), which was on an upper level. Two mins lost and another 2 min error on 12 where I lost concentration, took a narrow path too far left, couldn't see the recovery path and thrashed through deep brambles to get to the open area. Fool. I can see two better routes now and have done that control ok at night before. But executed the rest of the course pretty perfectly and avoided being distracted by Patrick on my tail for the last loop. 44th/70 MV. Mistakes cost about 10 places.

Orienteering race 43:24 [3] 7.0 km (6:12 / km) +155m 5:35 / km

Race the Castles Edinburgh. Pretty clean run. Hesitant at 1, took main roads to avoid faffing, got delayed about 30s waiting for cars to 3. Took straight route to 12 with lots of steps, maybe east over viaduct would have been easier? Fine round the rest. 41st/77 MV.

Orienteering race 1:00:27 [3] 6.0 km (10:05 / km)

Drumpellier night race. Bit of a mess from start to finish. Bogged down in nettles en route to 1 and caught by Alex from 2 mins behind. Convinced the pack were all too far left so drifted right, away from 3 and found myself on my own round the next loop. Annoyed, and lost composure to 8 hitting the wrong path, ploughing through more nettles and grot, then doing a 180 error next to the railway as Trevor ran past. Lost focus completely and was utterly lost at the second last then found the control while taking a safety bearing. Jogged to the finish and narrowly beaten by Dr John due to the run-in split too! Happy to avoid injury and the 'dangerous OOB marsh'.

Orienteering 20:00 [3] 1.0 km (20:00 / km)

Collecting 3 controls, took 10 mins trying to find #34 on a boulder in woodland, despite having taken 2 mins to find it 30 minutes previously. Home at 10.30pm for a glass of wine.

Orienteering race 1:19:15 [3] 10.9 km (7:16 / km) +165m 6:46 / km

Tentsmiur SoSOL Brown course. Pleased with a pretty solid run and getting to a decent fitness level again. A few minor misses, maybe 20s at 1, 20s at 6, 40s at 7, a minute at 9 not seeing a contour for the circle, but a strong finish - 16th/24 and a close 35s ahead of Steve.

Orienteering race 35:05 [3] 6.3 km (5:34 / km)

Stag night-o at Victoria Park. Pretty clean run and decent pace, just behind Alex but saw off Dr John.
