orienteering race 1:30:15 [4] 6.9 km (13:05 / km)

Long distance race at Caw.
Started high and quite a few good route choice legs - probably went round the wrong side of Caw -was rocky but found control otherwise ok until towards end where I stuffed up several - including going away from one with the right code...…..Grrrr

Really enjoy this style of fell orienteering

Note

Walk with Pete, Jo and Sandy in Duddon Valley including wood at base of Harter Fell

orienteering race (Urban) 52:17 [5] 7.0 km (7:28 / km)

BOK , at South Trowbridge. I don't think I have ever been to Trowbridge before but actually the race was around a flat, pretty soulless estate that could have been anywhere. A really hot evening, which may have contributed to not a great running performance. Reasonably straightforward but did make a big Horlicks going to 17 where I decided that the correct through road was actually a cul-de-sac and turned off running the length of an actual blind cul-de-sac, probably 90 secs lost, which in the concept of few making mistakes was actually massive -just a result of getting weary and slowing down being passed by a stream of much faster UBOC guys (good to see this!)

off road 1:00:00 [3] 6.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

BOK run from North Nibley. Not run from here before, went through flat fields to edge of Wootton and back along CW on a bright sunny evening. 11 runners and quite a diverse group. Its great to see different faces and all credit to Ifor and Tommi for resurrecting the BOK run, it is a good format but with just the same old stagers every week became same old, same old. Lovely evening and quite a few stops but just great to be out in such splendid country and great views. Did not feel great ( a bit too much sun pm?) so bailed out of pub, straight home and bed

off road 1:49:00 [3] 8.5 mi (12:49 / mi)

Another lovely summers day so decided on some long slow distance and did run from Cold Ashton. Meadows now verdant, birdsong, lambs etc. Slightly disappointingly LHS ankle hurt (as before) crossing uneven ground in St Catherine's vale (camber?)

orienteering race 1:33:15 [5] 7.9 km (11:48 / km)

BOK galoppen at Crooks Peak and Wavering Down. A lovely venue with panoramic views and a bright sunny and warm day. The course as expected had no shortage of climb (both steep ups and downs) and plenty of route choices.
I started quite positively, trying hard and I thought quite fast, but I was in 29th position by no 2. then Winsplits thinks I made mistakes:
3 (2 mins) -actually did not go straight rather due S and then minor path and slow on steep down but spiked flag.
4 (90 secs) Went up and round the veg then down into the control which I did not see. (it was here that I realised you had to really look for the flags) so went and searched around the next set of bushes before returning.
5 (1 min) down hill and along path spiking control - but not going hard enough.
6 Chose to run up the hill and then along E-W path. I felt strong on the hill but looking ahead missed the turn and ran up the wrong path, realised what I had done and covered the extra distance quite well. Time loss restricted to 2 mins but rather than picking up places was now 31st.
I still felt I was going quite well, was enjoying the run, spiking the controls and there were younger faster guys to race.
I did lose 90 secs on a short downhill leg to 15 but otherwise ok (Winsplit mistake at 14 is just slow on downhill). I did the long leg to 16 around the top ......did not see middle route which may have been best. Quite a long way but not too much climb.
Split positions seemed to get better towards the end and finished 22nd -tired but not shattered
Enjoyed the challenge
