off road 56:20 [4] 6.0 mi (9:23 / mi)

Blaise Castle from car park, knee hurt especially on downhills, quite tired on up hills and towards end. Quite hot and muggy. Transpires that I must have been working quite hard as quite good time.

Wednesday May 30, 2018 #

1 AM

flat efforts 42:00 [4] 3.5 mi (12:00 / mi)

Purdown 10 x 2mins with 90 secs. Raining, ran a bit better than expected
2 AM

Controlling 1:00:00 [2] 5.0 km (12:00 / km)

Hanging and collecting controls for Emersons Green Urban. Representative time and distance. Knee again not reacting well to being on my feet for prolonged period. Most seemed reasonably happy. Numbers a bit down, a consequence of half term? and possibly surfeit of recent events e.g. Tamar Triple etc.

Tuesday May 29, 2018 #

orienteering race 1:41:50 [4] 8.8 km (11:34 / km)

Braunton Burrows -got stuck on M5 by accident, had to rush, got changed, had to rush.....did not drink enough. Never really got into race, just overheated and spent ages searching around because of lack of care with navigation. All in all a bit of a disappointing trip and knee again not great

Friday May 25, 2018 #

flat efforts 50:00 [5] 3.5 mi (14:17 / mi)

Leigh woods 12 x 2mins with 90 secs. I found this challenging and knee quite sore afterwards. On paths and warm but raining

Thursday May 24, 2018 #

off road 1:07:00 [3] 6.0 mi (11:10 / mi)

Purdown, standard route, a few deviations, dogs etc. made it a bit longer but still bone dry so longer time really due to being a bit tired this morning.

Wednesday May 23, 2018 #

flat efforts 32:00 [5] 3.0 mi (10:40 / mi)

Pomphrey Fields 7x 2mins with 90 secs. First intervals for a while

Warm up
3 AM

orienteering (Urban) 1:08:00 [5] 6.8 km (10:00 / km)

Urban in Frome Valley from Oldbury Court -another rubbish result. Seem to be going ok for all the Urban bits in contrast went wrong at all the many controls in the woods, loosing loads of time, 5,6,9,19,20 22. probably nearly 10mins in total, lack of learning disappointing. Heart not really into the run -had gone to pick up controls

Tuesday May 22, 2018 #

off road 1:04:57 [3] 6.0 mi (10:50 / mi)

BOC Relays - very nice moraine forest, good planning and good team mates John and David and a pretty solid performance by all but some distance off the pace

Saturday May 19, 2018 #

1 AM

off road 12:00 [2] 0.5 km (24:00 / km)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 1:28:25 [5] 7.0 km (12:38 / km)

Balmoral British Long at Balmoral, great technical typical Deeside forest, good course, fantastic scenery that raised the spirits, gorgeous sunny day and good course.
Desperate result, very disappointing, my worst British ever. A couple of big mistakes but did not feel that bad when I finished. Desperately disappointing and quite hard to see why so bad.

Thursday May 17, 2018 #

orienteering 35:36 [3] 3.0 mi (11:52 / mi)

Purdown, just to keep legs loose without loading knee

Wednesday May 16, 2018 #

orienteering race 1:24:23 [4] 9.8 km (8:37 / km)

BAOC at Bramscott, needed to return EMIT kit so needed to go, so might as well run. Knee could have been worse, but its very easy physical terrain. It could also have been better, in particular towards the end and drive back when it hurt quite a lot. A few days off running and my fitness seems to have evaporated. Did quite enjoy the orienteering here......and have no kit in the garage

Friday May 11, 2018 #

Note

Disappointing knee not better when walking around Emersons Green

Wednesday May 9, 2018 #

Controlling 1:00:00 [2] 5.0 km (12:00 / km)

Checking controls, bringing in etc. The knee did now not allow much running at all. Must have a few days off.
Very relaxed day and general sense of well being from all, really enjoyed day.
What a contrast to the BOK Trot

BOK adopt a military style inflexible approach to events. The military a laid back one, it is an odd world in which we live.

Tuesday May 8, 2018 #

Controlling 1:00:00 [2] 6.0 km (10:00 / km)

Shared putting controls out with Pete, knee really not good.
The now green Yoxter looked splendid

Monday May 7, 2018 #

Note

Rest day as knee 'not good'

Note
(injured)

Controlling 2:00:00 [3] 10.0 km (12:00 / km)

OK so time to repeat, I knew controller who has been excellent throughout but out of contact has not checked southernmost controls because they were not there, so re-visited these first, its when you are very tired mistakes happen......So 7.30 by the time I started to wake up the northern loop. Not fast but keeping running, the knee although overdosed on Ibuprofen is now complaining like mad.

A real, real joy to run through the forest this morning.

When I arrive at the far start.....in the wrong place (not by the flag and taped and forest cleared as agreed), they are stressed as no clock or start list......so no time to move, the near start are happier.......get back to Finish.....controller is there has checked and woken up southern controls, he has put out the omitted tapes from the white/ yellow last control.......the organiser is bellowing at competitors for not following his tapes to the start .......anyone know cpr?

Its soon nearly 13.00 and time to walk the two miles across the forest to retrieve car and have breakfast..............not having a drinks control(s) clearly a big mistake.

A great weekend, and top support from many, many club members. Courses too long and challenging for many.....

Just need to let knee recover and not repeat experience too soon

Saturday May 5, 2018 #

Controlling 2:00:00 [2] 15.0 km (8:00 / km)

New Beechenhurst, glorious warm spring day, the forest was fantastic, another chance to disturb the families of pigs who seem to be becoming old friends.
As a result of the boar the forest is much more runnable but paradoxically slower and more tiring.........when I set foot into the forest with the first of my 85 controls 10.00 at I was full of optimism .....and I was certainly overoptimistic about my capabilities. Quite early on it was clear that I was much slower than anticipated, so kept well fed and watered and kept going.............and going the last control went out at 21.15.........and I was knackered. Drove home, cooked, bathed, ate, checked e-mail .........yes we can have a drinks control but only if I do it, no criticism of the overstretched and overstressed organiser but the club has lost the 'Mike Nelson' can do culture...........and set alarm for 5.30

Overall a great day but not one to repeat in a hurry

Friday May 4, 2018 #

orienteering 1:10:00 [3] 6.0 mi (11:40 / mi)

A nice social run with Pete and Jo from the visitor centre at Ashton Court, not run from this end for ages. Pete had come off his bike - dangerous things these bikes - did not firm up time or distance it was not one of those days.

Thursday May 3, 2018 #

orienteering 1:40:00 [3] 10.0 km (10:00 / km)

Ran Pete Foster's Brown course on Blackdown, as expected physically challenging but quite technical as well to find small holes. Also ran to and from area and did control 12 for example twice as cocked up first attempt.
I found it very difficult to get into the map, perhaps its old and much has changed. Why is it 1:7500? not !;10,000 when actually 1:15,000 would work?
I am a bit worried about how I will react when get to competitions with correct scale.

Wednesday May 2, 2018 #

off road 1:15:43 [3] 7.6 km (9:58 / km)

BAOC Event at Bagshot, really quite quirky but overall a cracking little area
The course had 30 controls so concentration was important. Ten minutes behind Mark - did make mistakes, went to 7 instead of 6, mistook paths going to 9 and came out of Green in completely the wrong place going to 23. I also did not have a definite enough strategy to cross the vehicle wallows, I would no to do this if I visited the area again. Did enjoy the challenge despite the rain.
1 AM

off road 15:00 [2] 0.8 km (18:45 / km)

Warm up

Tuesday May 1, 2018 #

off road 1:08:08 [3] 7.0 mi (9:44 / mi)

Did the run from Portbury, grass is growing up a bit so not quite at its fastest but is going to be much slower in the summer. Really enjoyed this spring morning
