Saturday Mar 31, 2018 #

1 AM

off road 20:00 [2] 1.0 km (20:00 / km)

Sort of double warm up to accommodate Evie worked ok for all
2 AM

orienteering race 45:14 [5] 4.5 km (10:03 / km)

JK Middle race, confused start. Poor location, no where to run on crowded path to distant start kite. Tense and big hesitations on 1 and 2, but then ok to 011 (although poor route to 10 ) but lost 3 mins at 12, I just could not understand what was happening with map. After which rhythm was not so good lost another 2mins at 18 and 1 and 21. So fell from 15th to 31st - a bit disappointing

Friday Mar 30, 2018 #

1 AM

road run 25:00 [2] 1.5 km (16:40 / km)

Good warm up
2 AM

orienteering race (Urban) 15:02 [5] 2.7 km (5:34 / km)

JK sprint MOD Stafford. Not too difficult almost went to 4 in front of 3 lost a few seconds but overall pretty clean, faded a bit towards end but 12th which for me and sprint races is a good result

Wednesday Mar 28, 2018 #

flat efforts (Road) 30:00 [3] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Went to Little Stoke just turning legs over. Found running not great no idea why.

Tuesday Mar 27, 2018 #

Note

Pretty much done all the pre-jk training might turn the legs over and that's it.
Circumstances have conspired to mean that the races have come a bit earlier than I wanted but its probably always the way

Monday Mar 26, 2018 #

1 AM

flat efforts 54:00 [5] 4.0 mi (13:30 / mi)

Oldbury Court 13 x 2mins with 90 secs, trying hard today and getting a fair way as conditions good but quite a struggle
2 AM

Controlling 1:00:00 [2] 6.0 km (10:00 / km)

Another trip to New Beechenhurst

Sunday Mar 25, 2018 #

1 AM

road run 25:00 [2] 2.0 km (12:30 / km)

Various warm ups, run to and from Urban start etc
2 AM

orienteering race (Urban) 44:16 [5] 7.2 km (6:09 / km)

NWO event around part of the huge ex Hercules base at Lyneham, now MOD , vehicles and a solar farm. Basically dead flat on the runways, grass in between and around the hangers. At least three officials had warned me that the map was double-sided but I ploughed on with 1:10. 000 around the buildings, spurning the 1.5000 option. This had two effects (a) I was more hesitant, so a good opportunity for urban practice was lost and (b) at No 14 which was a sort of "H" shaped building went and looked for the flag but no flag and so went round to the other side again no flag......so I went back and the control was further in.......and yes I did check the description but made it fit (map wring way round) when it did not. Lost 2+mins which when the rest get it completely right is a lot.
Suprisingly tired at end after really quite a short run

I really enjoyed being out on such a nice sunny spring day. NWO seem to be making progress and this event made really good use of the area and would have encouraged beginners or experts

orienteering 18:42 [4] 3.1 km (6:02 / km)

They also had an Urban course around the hangers only. Had to do this immediately after finishing, so nothing in my legs but still really good practice. It was at the start of this race, where the official said its the same scale as the flip side that I realised how dumb I had been. We did have some of the same controls inc. No 14 which was as clear as a bell.................
An interesting and different experience, showed up speed/ endurance a weakness to work on.

Saturday Mar 24, 2018 #

1 AM

road run 8:00 [2] 0.7 km (11:26 / km)

Short warm up
2 AM

orienteering (Urban) 19:08 [5] 2.4 km (7:58 / km)

Re-run of course around estate - quite pleased with fluidity and time
3 AM

road run 10:00 [2] 0.7 km (14:17 / km)

Another short warm up
4 AM

orienteering race 29:56 [5] 4.5 km (6:39 / km)

Clive Hallett planned race at Bath Spa Uni - Newton Park. A Saturday local event that was not a complete waste of time and effort!, actually very good, mixture of campus, fields and a bit of wood. Went quite well to No 20 the got a bit hesitant in campus twice losing which control I was going to and ran past last control under bridge (20 secs?). Enjoyed this and good practice but did rather feel have now "done" Newton Park. Perhaps a little surprised quite how far behind other Vets

Friday Mar 23, 2018 #

1 AM

road run 15:00 [2] 0.5 km (30:00 / km)

Various warm ups
2 AM

orienteering (Urban) 39:51 [5] 6.0 km (6:39 / km)

Flat Urban, early on some stops and hesitation, following wrong red line etc. but much better flow later on. Quite pleased with the time
3 AM

orienteering (Urban) 29:51 [4] 4.0 km (7:28 / km)

Major portion of second course, again flat flow bwtter but felt I was slowing down.

Thursday Mar 22, 2018 #

Controlling 1:30:00 [2] 8.0 km (11:15 / km)

Control site taping at New Beechenhurst. Good progress but still loads to do.
Forest in fantastic condition

Wednesday Mar 21, 2018 #

1 AM

off road 22:00 [2] 1.5 km (14:40 / km)

A good warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 1:14:26 [5] 8.4 km (8:52 / km)

A really warm bright spring day for BAOC event and Longmoor. 32 controls so really a picking exercise - and that's exactly what I need. Very short first leg did not find start kite or very, very short no.1, abandoned went back found start kite and then 1, going to 4 thought I was far enough east, but not so, still went through very wet possibly uncrossable part of marsh and then far to far west on path. Going to 5 intended to take short route to path but direction all wrong spent ages in heather, and came out to different path. To 6 went straight when round would have been quicker. Already 5 mins behind Mark, but then .......got into the course and despite a 180 at 13 was ok and only lost another 5 mins Really nice day to be out in the wood and very much enjoyed it.

Tuesday Mar 20, 2018 #

orienteering 1:50:00 [3] 10.0 km (11:00 / km)

Technical Training at Merthyr Mawr - better late than never........plenty still to do!

Monday Mar 19, 2018 #

off road 1:09:22 [3] 6.0 mi (11:34 / mi)

Standard run on Purdown in snow but thought I was going ok so a little disappointed by the time I guess I have been out of my training routine for a while

Sunday Mar 18, 2018 #

Note

So planning done, controls out and checking, signs, marquee and tapes up, maps and control descriptions checked and printed., organisational plans made it all just needed to happen

Saturday and probably Monday would have been ok...........

Really tough on LEIOC who had put lots into this race

Saturday Mar 17, 2018 #

Controlling 2:00:00 [2] 13.0 km (9:14 / km)

Bitterly cold day but very well rapped up, varied between driving snow, and quite nice sunshine, Steve measured the distance around the controls, so have used this. Overall probably out for 7+ hours so not surprisingly tired at the end

Friday Mar 16, 2018 #

Controlling 45:00 [2] 3.0 km (15:00 / km)

Spent some hours during the afternoon, checking ways through green and doing some 'gardening'

Thursday Mar 15, 2018 #

off road 49:03 [3] 4.5 mi (10:54 / mi)

The cold has not yet completely disappeared so went out onto Purdown to enjoy being outdoors but kept it easy in particular only one hill and pace at best 'steady'

Wednesday Mar 14, 2018 #

1 AM

off road 18:00 [2] 1.2 km (15:00 / km)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 47:24 [4] 6.5 km (7:18 / km)

Still feeling chesty whilst running and nowhere near 100% so careful not to push it.
Blackwood Harris race. Very flat beech wood, which had a certain majesty at this time of year, whilst areas of bramble rest was fast,
Seems like I missed a control (no 2 on spine) so ran within 5/10m and somehow or other failed to get a legitimate punch -oh well sorry team mates
Still a good run-about and interesting to do occasional other format

Tuesday Mar 13, 2018 #

Controlling 20:00 [2] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Cold still going strong, so out in the woods checking sites etc, for some hours but almost entirely walking. Time and distance representative of running content

Monday Mar 12, 2018 #

Note

Pretty bad on Sat and Sun and full blown cold today so no running

Saturday Mar 10, 2018 #

Note

Went to Sheffield to see Laura which was great but now have a sore throat and feel fluey. Good job Compassport cup cancelled as I don't think I could have run

Thursday Mar 8, 2018 #

off road 1:53:00 [3] 10.5 mi (10:46 / mi)

Ran with Pete from Portishead Lido up and down ridge to Clevedon and back along the coast path. Quite cold but a nice day to run and kept up quite a solid pace

Wednesday Mar 7, 2018 #

12 AM

road run 17:00 [2] 1.0 km (17:00 / km)

Enjoyed the warm up!
2 AM

orienteering race 1:20:23 [5] 7.3 km (11:01 / km)

Bulford Ridge, the other half which had the spiky bushes but not the interesting twiddles. The vegetation on the map if it had ever been correct was in need of a refresh it must have been a nightmare for the planner. There were six or seven times that I got stuck in horrid thorns at least three times I had to crawl, two controls where I chose what should have been viable routes and from the splits must have spent 4- 5 mins in the thorns. That said I did not help my cause made a couple of really bad mistakes and was slow to learn. Others had the same challenges but addressed them. When I finished I was dead last (and it has to be said in a bit of a grump). It was however a really nice sunny day and frustratingly I was quite quick over some of the legs and was enjoying it when I was not getting scratched.
Would I go back certainly, if I go to one army race next season it will be here I can do much better - I owe the area one

Tuesday Mar 6, 2018 #

flat efforts 50:31 [4] 4.0 mi (12:38 / mi)

Oldbury Court this was meant to be an old fashioned 4x 1 mile session except that it was not 1 mile, I know this because the efforts were between 6 -8.5 mins and I cannot run fast enough to run a mile in that time to save my life. It may also have been more than 4 as I chased a runner (unsuccessfully)up the hill on the way back. Basically the same route as doing the 2 mins but 3 at a time (inc. extra section) and 2.5- 3 mins gap. All a bit haphazard but this is a definite area of weakness and although not very quick with that in mind it was definitely ok

Monday Mar 5, 2018 #

off road 1:07:54 [3] 7.0 mi (9:42 / mi)

Leigh Woods run, a balmy 9 degrees. Surprisingly dry underfoot but the river was very full. Ran in a T shirt and should have worn shorts but did not, Quite pleased with the time seemed to be fluent today

Sunday Mar 4, 2018 #

off road 1:05:17 [3] 6.0 mi (10:53 / mi)

Ran on Purdown, standard loop, started in sunshine and some remnant snow but after 10 mins a heavy and persistent rain shower. Much warmer today. Our climate really is quite odd. Ran quite well today I guess it seems easier without snow.
Note
The North Somerset team went for a run on the Mendips but I did not see e-mail till too late which is a shame. I did however go out for a walk

Saturday Mar 3, 2018 #

off road 1:09:10 [3] 6.0 mi (11:32 / mi)

Ran on Purdown in the snow -much warmer and although still covered in most places some with deep snow some areas clear. Had to deviate for standard route to avoid the majority of local folk who were out sledging on every snow covered slope. Great to see so many kids out being active and having great fun, its a shame it does not happen more often!
Running quite hard work today but great to have opportunities to be out in the snow

Friday Mar 2, 2018 #

Note

No running today heavy snow but did go for a walk

Thursday Mar 1, 2018 #
