off road 2:29:00 [2] 9.5 mi (15:41 / mi)

Run from Lansdown Park and Ride with Pete, Jo, Sandy and John. P&R, Solesbury Hill, Charmy Down, and back up the reverse of the Tuesday BOK run. Plenty of mud and hills, new terrain for me so good fun to explore. Very wet to start with but soon improved. Visited the grave of Admiral Puget, of Sound fame.

Tuesday Jan 30, 2018 #

off road 50:00 [2] 4.0 mi (12:30 / mi)

Easy run and catch up with Ashley in Leigh Woods. Nice day outside, but then busy -too much to do

Monday Jan 29, 2018 #

off road 1:06:21 [3] 6.0 mi (11:04 / mi)

Mild and dry afternoon with occasional sunshine. Standard Purdown run with 2x wood and 3 hills

Sunday Jan 28, 2018 #

1 AM

off road 40:00 [2] 4.0 km (10:00 / km)

Running to and from car park to assy and assy to start/ finish and warm up
2 AM

orienteering 1:06:59 [5] 7.6 km (8:49 / km)

Concorde Chase at Star posts. Some of the compass work was not accurate enough - lost some time at early controls. Particularly 4 where I ignored large re-entrant with control in it to hunt in bracken for non- existent small one- I wonder why? -probably -2mins. But worst to come at 5 - abandoned my chosen route on the long leg to cut through green, banana, took wrong forest road and soon running almost 180 degrees wrong took ages to sort out probably getting on for -5mins. All a shame as rest of course better and running a bit quicker.
Do need to focus on concentration,
Forest in good condition and enjoyed run

Friday Jan 26, 2018 #

off road 1:05:59 [4] 7.0 mi (9:26 / mi)

Blaise run from Churchill Rd- had been very wet so used tarmac track up the valley rather than mud. Had not really intended to but push on from the start really all the way round

Thursday Jan 25, 2018 #

off road 1:08:11 [4] 7.0 mi (9:44 / mi)

Nice sunny day did the run from the Priory at Portbury. After a couple of days where just keeping running has seemed quite difficult went back to dosing on Ibuprofen and concentrated on pushing on rather than pottering on. The big gates were all open so time is flattering if they had been shut and I had to stop and climb over I guess I would have been 2-3 mins slower maybe more. Still time and performance whilst not exceptional was certainly ok

Wednesday Jan 24, 2018 #

1 AM

road run 10:00 [2] 0.5 mi (20:00 / mi)

Only a short warm up -driving rain
2 AM

orienteering race 1:12:22 [4] 8.0 km (9:03 / km)

Longmoor, very, very wet and raining. Ran in a cagoule. Only made one mistake, no 11, losing over two mins having to come back out and relocate in a very complex set of paths, most of legs just straight, good opportunity to terrain run. Probably a good thing that the navigation was not too tricky. Actually going much slower than Mark on all legs, perhaps he is getting fitter....but also I was plodding. Thoroughly enjoyed the run although I was quite keen to get back into the car and switch the heater on.

Tuesday Jan 23, 2018 #

road run 55:00 [3] 5.0 mi (11:00 / mi)

BOK run Bradley Stoke, don't know what happened or why but dreadful could not get legs to work at all, so cut it short.......I wonder why? perhaps not used to running in the evening. Anyway very disappointing ....but tomorrow is a new day...bring it on!

Monday Jan 22, 2018 #

off road 1:31:12 [3] 8.0 mi (11:24 / mi)

Run around Ashton Court and out the back. Still a bit weary from the weekend so a bit slow

Sunday Jan 21, 2018 #

Note

Rest day as exhausted.
Pete and Jo went to collect the night controls in what must have been a monsoon.......will be picking up beer bills for rest of the year?

Saturday Jan 20, 2018 #

Controlling 58:00 [3] 5.0 km (11:36 / km)

Waking up day controls and checking none sat on by cows.....unlike the yellow pegs which were all flattened and/ or chews.
There are now a lot of cows (and sheep, and horses on Yoxter)
2 AM

Controlling 2:00:00 [2] 10.0 km (12:00 / km)

Put out night controls and collected in the day ones. Saw a hare but it would have had no chance against Adam Potter. Times and distance just a guess. On my feet for 12 hours and I no longer have the stamina so exhausted towards the end.
Tremendous support from all in the club
The day event seemed to go well and the courses were well received, its the first proper event I have planned since the Harvester in 2010 but back in time I had planned quite a few big races. I enjoy planning but end up continually being asked to control which is much less creative and enjoyable.
Clare's organisation was top draw.
The night 'o' turned out to be an epic as the fog got so dense you could scarcely see the next set of cows eyes.....and is now in the hall of WNL infamy.
I was really however quite surprised and gutted by the turnout, I have let off steam by e-mailing the committee......but when the treasurer sees the map printing bill .......

Controlling 2:00:00 [2] 8.0 km (15:00 / km)

Out at Yoxter and with Pete Foster's help hanging the day controls, deja vu from planning JK2001/2 and BOK Trot 199x . Much appreciated help. Its really nice being out in these areas where you would never normally venture, As area frozen and very fast, we delighted in watching a deer bound across......would have given Ben Mitchell a race (but probably lost), were intrigued by an inquisitive herd of cows closing in to a control flag to give it a closer inspection. Fierce hail stones at one point left the area and roads white with icy ball bearings..... turn right into the lane said Pete .....the wall looked awfully close as the car went sideways......turn right into the lane said Pete as we went down the steep hill to the crossroads....for some reason straight across and hope nothing is coming seemed a better plan

Note

It was 2013 when we realised that Laura's,.indeed all our, friend had been cruelly taken from us by an avalanche in Glen Coe and it still makes us sad......how difficult for her parents and sisters.

"Black, black day. The glimmer of hope that just somehow, somehow it might not be Rachel has been extinguished.
No heart for running or really anything else
Someday we may reconcile that she did more in a third of a life that most in a full and that our whole family delighted in her joy but not this day. Today we will cry because we will miss the sparkling eyes and huge grin and be angry that life is so unfair and cruel. Today we will think of her family in the hope that it will somehow ease their pain.
A lot of fun has left the world........"

Thursday Jan 18, 2018 #

off road 1:40:35 [3] 8.5 mi (11:50 / mi)

After the disappointment of yesterday I decided to do a more challenging session so did the long run from Swineford with two big hills.Car park, up to golf course, passed pub, down hill, up steep lane & then foot path to rejoin CW, round the battlefield and down lane to Upton Cheyney. Really felt I had worked hard by the end

Wednesday Jan 17, 2018 #

flat efforts 53:27 [5] 4.0 mi (13:22 / mi)

The maps had not arrived so I needed to stay in and check all was well, which of course it was......the trouble with these late deadlines is little or no contingency. So no Army orienteering which was pretty disappointing.
Did the 11 x 2mins with 90 secs in Oldbury Court

Tuesday Jan 16, 2018 #

off road 1:07:25 [3] 6.0 mi (11:14 / mi)

Quite a sunny morning so went out. Standard Purdown loop with 3 hills and twice around the wood. Not too bad at start but still feeling Sunday later

Monday Jan 15, 2018 #

off road 1:01:00 [3] 5.5 mi (11:05 / mi)

A run and catch up with retired Pete, who is getting very fit and strong by exercising everyday. From his front door onto the slopes of Dundry. Some very nice and typically English countryside. Thoroughly enjoyed the outing and must do it again. Legs seemed very heavy after yesterday

Sunday Jan 14, 2018 #

road run 35:00 [2] 2.5 km (14:00 / km)

Warm up, collecting controls etc
2 AM

orienteering race 1:26:56 [5] 7.3 km (11:55 / km) +400m 9:21 / km

BOK Galloppen at Headless Hill, quite slow particularly on steep slopes, some quite slippy, inc results of wild boar activity, also remarkable amount of of timber I guess as a result of recent gales, probably quite disappointing for planner (Chris). Missed a couple of path options so pretty much all in the wood. Overall a challenging run and quite knackered afterwards

Saturday Jan 13, 2018 #

off road 1:05:00 [3] 6.0 mi (10:50 / mi)

A bit pre-occupied so ran around Leigh Woods not usual route in particular no Nightingale Valley

Friday Jan 12, 2018 #

flat efforts 54:00 [5] 4.0 mi (13:30 / mi)

Oldbury Court 11 x 2mins with 90 secs. Quite wet underfoot so not too fast and quite hard work

Thursday Jan 11, 2018 #

off road 1:29:14 [3] 8.0 mi (11:09 / mi)

Lovely mid-day run in sunshine and warmer than of late. Loop around Ashton Court and then out of the back. Quite weary towards the end and knees were not great so had to concentrate quite hard. Very enjoyable run, despite being close to the city some lovely countryside. Completely knackered afterwards- need some more stamina from somewhere

Wednesday Jan 10, 2018 #

1 AM

off road 18:00 [2] 0.6 mi (29:59 / mi)

Good warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 1:09:09 [5] 5.8 km (11:55 / km) +300m 9:28 / km

Slightly against my better judgement I was persuaded to go to the Military league central event at British Camp (Malverns) rather than South at Hankley -its only half the travel time. The Malverns provide a majestic setting on a bright winters day with splendid views in both directions enhanced by areas of localised fog around the Severn etc. I did have difficulty finding small control sites on the steep slopes and the twelve year old map a bit passed its sell by date. Pretty much everyone was much faster, found it easy and very enjoyable. My knees hurt and I did not.

Tuesday Jan 9, 2018 #

flat efforts 45:00 [4] 3.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Flat efforts on Purdown 8 x 2 mins with 90 secs - quite short of time. Good news is the first interval section has now been done.

Note

Went to Naomi who does my feet. They have been much sorer of late and she had more trouble than usual. She has warned that there may be more issues and I may need to go back. Perhaps an additional pair of shoes needs to be introduced

Monday Jan 8, 2018 #

off road 57:58 [3] 6.0 mi (9:40 / mi)

Blaise from the car park, a cold, drizzly day. Hard to work quite hard to get up hills and to get back sub 60.

Sunday Jan 7, 2018 #

1 AM

off road 2:12:00 [2] 11.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

CW from Cleeve Hill to Seven springs with Dave and Celia. I had never run this section before and a delight on a hard, frosty, bright sunshine day with excellent views -ran the route (13.6 km) in about 1.44 and then continued on as an out and back

Saturday Jan 6, 2018 #

off road 58:24 [3] 5.0 mi (11:41 / mi)

Standard route from Swineford to CW and then Kelston Round Hill, had intended to do more but not feeling great so reverted to shorter option. Quite muddy

Friday Jan 5, 2018 #

1 AM

off road 1:12:00 [3] 7.0 mi (10:17 / mi)

Run with Mark and Alice from Portbury, keeping up a good pace despite being quite muddy
2 AM

Controlling 1:00:00 [2] 3.0 km (20:00 / km)

Yoxter, representative time and distance

Thursday Jan 4, 2018 #

off road 59:00 [3] 5.0 mi (11:48 / mi)

Another busy day so run was a bit of a token gesture. Purdown short loop (3 hills) started in gloom and finished in pitch, some very slow walking on steep muddy slopes and had to disentangle myself from a thorn bush I had run into, but other bits pace not too bad- glad I made the effort

Wednesday Jan 3, 2018 #

off road 1:08:40 [3] 6.0 mi (11:27 / mi)

BAOC event cancelled because of Storm Eleanor. Very windy over night but pleasant to run in sunshine and winds had died down.Traditional run around Purdown (inc 3 hills and twice through wood) -first time for a while

Tuesday Jan 2, 2018 #

Note

Busy during day and was thinking of joining BOK run but knee not great and weather forecast poor so took a day off.

Monday Jan 1, 2018 #

orienteering (Urban) 52:40 [4] 6.1 km (8:38 / km)

Ran late in day, not at all sure about knees so decided to re-run one of the Urban races at Keynsham. Not much warming up so ignored
