off road 1:34:00 [3] 8.0 mi (11:45 / mi)

Run from Mark and Alice's house with surprise, surprise Mark and Alice. Twmbalan via solar farm along the ridge down to a cycle track in Cym Carn and back via Twmbalan and lane. Splendid run both in variety and views. No shortage of climb, and complete lack of real or naturalised Welsh genes so a bit fatigued and could feel a hamstring by the end. Good run.

off road 1:28:42 [3] 8.0 mi (11:05 / mi)

AC and Abbots Pool loop in the sunshine, great. Ball of foot a bit sore may need to think about this tomorrow

orienteering 2:15:00 [2] 10.0 km (13:30 / km)

Went to Llanwynider with Pete for technical training. Started in mist and drizzle which made it technically and physically difficult. soon it was absolutely throwing it down, which significantly compromised the learning opportunity. Some bits good others needed improvement.
Possible second session on Merthyr Common rain stopped play.

flat efforts 47:36 [5] 3.5 mi (13:36 / mi)

Downs Pyramid session from 30 secs up to 3min x 2 and back, max rest 2mins. The extra 3 mins again made it tough. Good running conditions but as always which ever sense you run around the Downs its always into the wind.

off road 1:22:52 [3] 8.0 mi (10:21 / mi)

From Swineford , figure of eight run, North Stoke, Racecourse, Round Hill, North Stoke, golf course & Upton Cheyney. A bit cloudy to start with but sunny towards end. Quite quick as dry underfoot to Round Hill but struggling a bit in the second half

orienteering race 1:07:55 [5] 8.3 km (8:11 / km)

Bentley Wood, Midland Champs, OD put on a very good race, good occasion and nice warm Spring day. Tried hard and good in parts but really a bit disappointed and annoyed with myself -definitely an opportunity lost.
OK to 7 which I overshot a bit and so approached in an odd way probably losing less than a minute, left heading towards 9 but corrected quite quickly and then could not find the flag despite being on a bank so a bit sneaky 1.5 mins, missed 11 wrong ditch in the green but realised and recovered so another 1-1.5 minutes gone.
I then confused my plan for 12 and 13 and deliberately ran south from the control, reaching the track and again realised quickly but had an extra 2 mins to do on the tracks. Ran this leg fast as with the rest of course but damage done.
63 mins was within my grasp today, a time which although well of the leaders would have been delightful. Possibly doing the easier Army races has diminished my respect for the sport. A bit better planning and hey presto?

flat efforts 53:51 [5] 4.0 mi (13:28 / mi)

Oldbury Court 11 x 2 mins with 90 secs. Quite sharp pain round back of knee about 10 yards from front door. Perhaps a good job I had decided not to race today (I am a bit fed up with driving) -cast a shadow on session - mostly ran it off but something not quite right. Sunny day but with a nip in the wind

Note

Walk around Purdown with Charlie

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 1:12:09 [3] 9.3 km (7:45 / km)

BAOC Event at Frith Hill, truly lovely wood to run in and had been looking forward to this for a while. Only used small area but not too repetitious. Not perfect but ok to 9, a bit eaten up thinking I had not taken best route (but actually ok) cut in from reasonable attackpoint (on track just past 13) but poor compass came out unexpectedly on track (actually ride) and struggled to relocate, needed to go to junction -lost 3 maybe 4 mins. Picked up ok afterwards and probably ran smother than earlier.

Tuesday Mar 21, 2017 #

off road 55:00 [2] 4.5 mi (12:13 / mi)

AC with AC -started quite quickly but slowed in second part. (Ash feeling after effects of big bile ride on Sunday) Park looking fantastic with onset of Spring

Monday Mar 20, 2017 #

off road 1:10:32 [3] 7.0 mi (10:05 / mi)

Leigh woods loop- muddy in parts, struggling a bit on early hills but big effort up Nightingale Valley

off road 1:05:00 [3] 5.0 mi (13:00 / mi)

Ran from Cold Ashton intending to do long run but again same soreness at the start. Decided to curtail run rather than commit so went no further than Beeks Farm. After decision loosened up and fine coming back up the hill. I like the country side near Bath and will do long run later in year

Thursday Mar 16, 2017 #

off road 1:04:30 [3] 5.0 mi (12:54 / mi)

AC with AC and also out passed Abbots Pool. An odd niggle around the bottom of hamstring/ back of knee. Quite sore to start with, so happy to start slowly but eased of during run

off road 15:00 [2] 0.8 mi (18:45 / mi)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 1:10:15 [5] 8.4 km (8:22 / km)

BAOC Silbury Hill , nice sunny Spring day -two mistakes stupid & very stupid, on easy course -disappointing. Missed control 7 perhaps the hedge was wider and went in too far east, found unmarked depression and when I did find the flag still could not understand the map. In actually fact the Apache hovering literally 50m above my head was very distracting - I am sure the guys found by efforts very amusing. Awesome machine but probably a good thing my hearing is already rubbish
Also missed 14 on the fort, actually did the leg quite well just a little too far east and going too quickly. If I had stopped would have fallen over flag and not had to relocate and come back in.

orienteering 47:09 [5] 4.2 km (11:14 / km)

CompasSport cup. A bit of a hump because I have to be a Green Man where I would really prefer to do the Brown here and enjoy the full area. I really was quite messy no major mistakes but not clean through the controls. For example on route to 8 I decided successfully to go to 9 instead. I do need to learn not to over rush in middle races.

off road 1:18:58 [3] 8.0 mi (9:52 / mi)

North along CW from Old Sodbury, surprisingly warm yet cloudy day. Running seemed quite hard work 4115 to the turn. Working quite hard on the way back

Friday Mar 10, 2017 #

off road 1:08:10 [3] 6.0 mi (11:22 / mi)

Compton Dando, run around Jackie's route with Pete and Jo. Surprisingly muddy. Nice to run with my team mates

Thursday Mar 9, 2017 #

flat efforts 48:19 [5] 3.5 mi (13:48 / mi)

Final got to the dentist and then did the first effort session for ages on the Downs. Pyramid 30 secs to 3 mins x 2 and back down with 2mins max recovery. Seemed ok on the way up but had to work hard onm the way down the extra 3 mins seemed testing. Tired afterwards

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 1:17:27 [5] 10.3 km (7:31 / km)

BAOC event at Hollands Wood (was Denny Lodge). Dead flat completely white if very wet forest. Unusiual event with only 10 controls none of which was hidden. Unfortunetly going to 2 a long leg with a section of forest road running, I decided irrationally that I had gone too far and went to look for a pit. Had to return to track and complete leg -will have lost 3 mins. Don't supposed anyone else made an errors it was that sort of a day. Don't think I would want to do this every week but very good training

Tuesday Mar 7, 2017 #

off road 1:08:57 [4] 7.0 mi (9:51 / mi)

Blaise Castle. Had intended to do intervals after dentist but appointment is actually Thursday. So went to Blaise and did full run. Nice sunny day not too muddy, so positive and started quickly chasing another runner, kept up pace in middle section and knew I was surprisingly quick at start of end section so pushed on.Don't think I have run sub 70 for a very long time. I would have been happy with 75mins today

off road 15:00 [2] 0.8 mi (18:45 / mi)

Decent warm up
2 AM

orienteering 1:19:54 [4] 7.9 km (10:07 / km)

Sarum Saunter at Fonthill - felt first time in ages that I was running normally.
Early course (Short Brown) could be considered easy and so could start quite aggressively. Went fine to control 10, route started along edge of forest where I was met with driving, horizontal hail. Almost reduced to a stand still, reverted to forest. Approaching control ran through obvious flag into open forest as attackpoint but no compass . Forest open but enough rubbish on floor to hide a pesky pit and lose ages. (Also fell - I now do this regularly but quite rare to land on head!), a bit stroppy and lost some momentum in particular at 13 ran through a tower (attackpoint) but ignored compass to search amongst bushes. Again spent a while sorting out. Perhaps a lessons on using compass to support even on 'easy' areas. Also lost time on last leg due to poor (i,e. no) route choice .
Chris Kelsey lost loads of time coming back across the road (7 mins) - its a big advantage that whenever organisers say never / not used for 20 years I have run there before so knew it was a cutting/ tunnel. He is clearly going quicker but I was more competitive than of late on some legs

Saturday Mar 4, 2017 #

Controlling 2:00:00 [2] 8.0 km (15:00 / km)

Controlling Merthyr Mawr race day.
Quite pleased with how day went, no baying about controls in wrong place or as although improving some areas are actually quite grotty.
Wood added variety but novelty factor only once. Several runners were troubled with first leg. Start kite was ok but scale was alien, many older competitors probably liked big scale but it does take acclimatisation

Friday Mar 3, 2017 #

Controlling 2:00:00 [2] 6.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Big day at Merthyr Mawr , weather better than it could have been, very fatigued at the end -possibly by need to keep concentration in technical , went home to bed/ sleep for early start

Thursday Mar 2, 2017 #

off road 1:29:50 [3] 6.0 mi (14:58 / mi)

Ran from Burrington Combe, started ok, but quite quickly felt weak and slowed badly, came straight back from top of Tynings Farm lane. Pleased to be back ! Quite tired hope this won't have any afters!

Wednesday Mar 1, 2017 #

off road 55:40 [3] 5.0 mi (11:08 / mi)

Purdown shorter and also took options to avoid worst of mud (and dogs) but still wood and 3 hills. Time better than expected
