Note

Travel to Ireland -ferry arrived (actually disembarked) 6 hours late! Roslare at midnight. Still lovely day and good company.

Thursday May 30, 2013 #

flat efforts 45:00 [5] 4.0 mi (11:15 / mi)

Downs -Pyramid 30 secs to 3 mins with 2 mins max gap.
Found it very tough -don't know why - perhaps the gap in running?

Wednesday May 29, 2013 #

orienteering race (Urban) 50:53 [5] 6.4 km (7:57 / km)

Sidcot School and Winscombe. If Keith had planned or Dudley made the map I might have through could do better, but they did not -Graham Hartley did. (I don't know Graham at all) and full marks. Novelty - not throw a six but I have a complex but small school and a village . So two maps and scales - roads footpaths, old railway and fields and then sprint round buildings. Great
The map deteriorated quite badly in the wet - that's not great.
As for the race I got confused crossing the road bridge both ways, went to wrong garden in sprint (-1min?) and another error (0.5 mins). Sundry hesitations etc,

Note

The 'O' season is over so I am going to give my increasingly painful knees a week off. This will help me catch up on some family things, domestic chores and kick start my course work over the long weekend

Wednesday May 22, 2013 #

orienteering race 35:11 [5] 5.4 km (6:31 / km)

Walmley & Syston.
Dudley's course had fewer controls and more route choice than expected. A few more wobbles and hesitations than I would have liked but not too bad,
I wonder if it was !:7500 you could get Rodway Common on as well?
1 AM

off road 21:00 [3] 2.0 mi (10:30 / mi)

extended warm up

Tuesday May 21, 2013 #

flat efforts 35:00 [4] 3.0 mi (11:40 / mi)

Downs -late in evening as needed to return from Derby. Long warm up then intervals with Ash. 6*1.5 mins. Ash made sure that they were good quality. 6 was right for him I could/ should have done a few more

Monday May 20, 2013 #

Note

Needed to take a rest day and then an easy week. Coincides with a busy week at work. Monday and Tuesday in Derby

Sunday May 19, 2013 #

orienteering race 1:15:34 [5] 7.5 km (10:05 / km)

Wessex galloppen at Shillingstone Hill - I really did not enjoy this and I dont think I will be rushing back. I missed control 17 started to read route to 18. ended up attacking 3 times and binning 5.5 mins. Really pretty inexcusable. 1-4 ok really struggled with the steep slope to 5 but persisted in my predetermined route to contour and approach 6 from below. This could be desribed as thinking out of the box eventually bailed out and ran up and along the forest road like everone else. Lost small amounts of time in the nettles surrounding many of the nest controls. More trouble with contouring going to 15. Post 17 returned to normality.
In orienteering you have to find the controls....

Vegetation is now really up -don't see doing much more forest orienteering in the SW till the autumn.
Seasons really over (probably give SINS a miss) - I am in Derby for a couple of days will probably take a few days off and plan what to do next

Saturday May 18, 2013 #

flat efforts 45:00 [5] 4.0 mi (11:15 / mi)

BAWA field 9*2mins with 90 secs gap. Nice warm morning quite pleased with distances achieved. Perhaps best interval session this season. No issue with knees could just feel one of my hamstrings towards end

Friday May 17, 2013 #

off road 1:03:25 [3] 6.0 mi (10:34 / mi)

Blaise castle from the car park standard + twice over the castle. Lots of climb. Old shoes and bad knees quite tired

Thursday May 16, 2013 #

off road 1:24:45 [3] 8.0 mi (10:36 / mi)

LSD- Ashton Court loop, Abbots Pond, Back passed Redwood Lodge. Really mixed speed rather than LSD. Rain driving there but running in a nice evening. New shoes again but a bit soon both soles of feet and knees s bit sore at the end

Wednesday May 15, 2013 #

1 AM

off road 15:00 [3] 1.2 mi (12:30 / mi)

warm up around Bath University
2 AM

orienteering race (Urban) 24:48 [5] 3.3 km (7:31 / km)

Bok Urban event at Bath University. Really very good - crossed the big block twice with multi- level challenges. Found it the most difficult sprint of the year. Several times stopped or hesitant as to what to do next. Possibly would have benefitted from 1:4000. Kept thinking for most of the race -even got confused with the last control.

Tuesday May 14, 2013 #

1 AM

flat efforts 45:00 [5] 3.5 mi (12:51 / mi)

Stoke Lodge Field. Ashleys session 6*1.5 mins with 1 mi n gap & 6*1min with 45 secs gap. Seem to be trying to run fast all the time - not easy
2 AM

off road 55:00 [3] 5.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

BOK run at Iron Acton along the Frome. Michael running well at the front,
A bit on the short side really needed another 10 mins but wet and a bit miserable. Christened a new pair of shoes - knees were fine

Monday May 13, 2013 #

Note

Eye very sore and associated head ache did not really sleep on sun night and had to leave work early - but then just slumped on the sofa

Sunday May 12, 2013 #

orienteering race 1:12:33 [5] 8.8 km (8:15 / km)

Sarum gallopen at Hamptworth. Pretty well planned mostly short legs with runs in between. Nice deciduous wood last. Unfortunately threw 2 mins away on last control no. 28. too far down the hill and snagged in very heavy brashings. Possibly a bit tired at the end so blundered rather than read the map. A couple of other small misses 5 & 7
A bit slower than I would have liked - mostly lack of speed running through the wood
Poked my eye on a branch - very sore and headache now but could see to drive. Why doesent this happen all the time?

Saturday May 11, 2013 #

off road 1:15:12 [3] 8.5 mi (8:51 / mi)

CW from Dog. Fast 38.30 to turn. Wind against on way back . Did not race this as sometimes Ran in old pair of swoops and the knees did seem easier

Friday May 10, 2013 #

off road 1:04:14 [4] 7.0 mi (9:11 / mi)

Of great interest and excitement to me but no interest at all to anyone else was that the Old Girl went through 222,222 on the way to Blaise
Felt slightly sick before I started - beware canteen lunch so resolved to go steadily actually ran quite hard took the off track route through the valley.
Underfoot hard despite recent rains so good time.
Knees sore (again) at end perhaps need more shoes to rotate

Thursday May 9, 2013 #

flat efforts 34:00 [4] 2.5 mi (13:36 / mi)

Delighted to report first session with Ash for probably 18 months -he is back running just a bit rusty.
Sensible session 10*1min with 60 secs rest. Horrible evening on the Downs -blowing a gale and the proverbial cats and dogs

Wednesday May 8, 2013 #

orienteering race 38:00 [5] 5.3 km (7:10 / km)

BOK park event at Oldbury Court. Tried to run along slope between 3and 4 moral don't. Could not find 13,14 and 15 Knowing where you are on the slope is not easy So not great time. 13 misread clearing and at 14 started to read to control on crag no 4. Shows what happens when you tire from trying to run fast.
Not sure how much I enjoyed it. Found slopes covered in bushes frustrating. Probably good training for a middle race. Need to traffic light
1 AM

off road 18:50 [3] 1.5 mi (12:33 / mi)

Run down to Oldbury Court
3 AM

off road 17:19 [3] 1.2 mi (14:26 / mi)

Run back from Oldbury

Tuesday May 7, 2013 #

1 AM

off road 21:00 [2] 1.5 mi (14:00 / mi)

Dundry pre- Bok run warm up - will I ever be able to run again
2 AM

off road 1:10:00 [3] 7.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

BOK run off edge of Dundry Hill and back. Nice evening good views and company - hard to believe its only a mile and a half from some of the rougher areas of the city - only spoiled by the amount of rubbish and fly tipping on the lanes.
Part of the "hill fort" is actually Wansdyke. Thanks Pete for organising not run here for some while

Monday May 6, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

Really knackered after weekend -enforced day off

Sunday May 5, 2013 #

orienteering race 37:28 [5] 5.0 km (7:30 / km)

BOC Relay-M50-Holmbery Hill
Clive came back in the lead (32mins) -some guy sprinted him in. Relay running is about carrying the baton round. Its good I did that but really should have run 2 mins quicker. A couple of minor not finding the controls correctly but just not fast enough. James Crawford running 32 ran straight through me but I was struggling to run at all never mind keep up. Alan ran the same time but was run down by acouple of faster teams. We were 5th he needed the couple of mins from me to have much of a chance for 3rd
Knees now terrible.

Saturday May 4, 2013 #

orienteering race 1:13:26 [5] 9.2 km (7:59 / km)

BOC Winterfold & Pitch Hill
Well acheived my aim 10th but no breakthrough. Pretty pleased with the season 9th JK day 1 (if the organiser had let me have my time) 20+ JKday 2, 9th Sprint and 7th middle. Best run was JK but matched the physical endevour today. Really all the guys who beat me are just better.
The wood was slower with more bilbery and brashing that I expected. I had two quite heavy falls, could/ should have used the paths a bit more.
Time losses at 2, 9 & 10 (how stupid was that) 14 & annoyingly 16 (which cost a place) All really in the circle and fractions of a minuite. Really a few too many but did not put me off. Almost did the long leg right but chose an unpoular southern approach which from the splits was perhaps 90 secs slower . Please with overall no big mistake and kept racing for full length. Could perhaps have done 70 with faultess run but 64 would mean a step change in speed both on the tracks and the wood.
Congratulations to Donald Petrie avery worthy winner and to the English guys who were not far behined.
A genuine championship race worthy of the British
I had pretty much run to exhaustion and post race my knees were very sore

Friday May 3, 2013 #

Note

Rest day - quite nervous about this weekend -thats rare these days

Note

After sprints and middle target is top 10. Area should suit not desparately difficult and plenty of tracks. For M55 its a genuine classic race and a good field. Things will have to go well with few mistakes

Thursday May 2, 2013 #

Note

Rest day -short walk - but want to be fresh for weekend

Wednesday May 1, 2013 #

orienteering race (Urban) 39:48 [5] 5.8 km (6:52 / km)

BOK urban from Coombe Dingle. Good place for Urban - lots of fields, and go along the Trym. Spotted important cut through. Good variety probably ran 8km. Did not waste much time. Enjoyed course quite different to previous race. This map does give you choices and yes I went round both the football and the cricket. Knowing area does help. Lovely warm evening
1 AM

off road 20:00 [3] 1.5 mi (13:20 / mi)

Ran on Downs to warm up
