1 AM

Controlling 1:30:00 [2] 7.0 mi (12:51 / mi)

Moseley Green, hanging controls in southern area (unused by my course)
Representative time
2 AM

off road 10:00 [2] 0.5 km (20:00 / km)

Warm up -always more difficult to do well in the dark but ok
3 AM

orienteering race (Night) 43:39 [4] 4.7 km (9:17 / km)

Southern Night Champs at Carwent, a bit stop and go and a couple of odd events like starting to go towards 10 on way to 9 and having to correct but no major mistakes so pleased with that -the preparatory sessions were of considerable benefit. Only disappointment was just getting into race to find I had finished - no doubt planned to guidelines but personally would have preferred an hour.
The area may not please the technical purists but did me!
Pleased with performance but quite along way down on the proper night orienteers

Note

Rest day today

Thursday Nov 28, 2019 #

off road 36:45 [3] 3.0 mi (12:15 / mi)

Quite a lot on today and running a bit late so just a short run, but with plenty of hills in Blaise

Wednesday Nov 27, 2019 #

orienteering race 1:46:40 [5] 8.5 km (12:33 / km)

MLS Long valley - not a good run, one big mistake but time losses on probably half the controls -really don't know what was the issue today - a bad day at the office
1 AM

off road 12:00 [3] 0.8 km (15:00 / km)

Tuesday Nov 26, 2019 #

orienteering 1:00:00 [3] 7.0 km (8:34 / km)

Night orienteering training in Leigh Woods surprisingly difficult

Monday Nov 25, 2019 #

off road 1:08:47 [3] 6.0 mi (11:28 / mi)

Was set to be a very wet day so I went to Leigh Woods, actually quite mild and I ran in a dry window. It was however muddy underfoot.

Sunday Nov 24, 2019 #

Note

Quite tired this week so did not run today, but did go round the Orange at Blaise with Huw, Charlie and Daniel. Fun day

Saturday Nov 23, 2019 #

Controlling 1:30:00 [2] 6.0 km (15:00 / km)

Putting controls out and checking at Blaise.
Quite tricky, which was nor what I was expecting. I did not really get on very well with this version of map for some reason

Friday Nov 22, 2019 #

off road 1:42:00 [3] 9.0 mi (11:20 / mi)

Wet day, ground was sodden and flooded. Trailed after Chris around the Mendips. Day started badly as I had made a mistake in the directions so Jackie must have gone to a different place , what a mess up really sorry. We waited for a while so the rain could change to heavy. The theory that Chris would be broken after the OMM lasted till the first hill......went passed the church and sloshed around the west end and then over Dolebury Warren before climbing up the moor to the end of the Tynings fram lane and then swam across the Somme to Beacon Batch, down the hill and sloshed across the bottom and then back on to Dolebury Warren. mostly retracing steps but took the wet path back to the Sawn. No sign of rust on the iron man. A rather longer but enjoyable and worthwhile true training run. Would have been impossible without Mudclaws (which really are on last legs)
Did I mention that it was wet today

Thursday Nov 21, 2019 #

off road 1:17:55 [3] 7.0 mi (11:08 / mi)

CW north from the Dog -a cold grey winters day with a temperature of 4, so ran in many layers and not terribly fast

Wednesday Nov 20, 2019 #

1 AM

off road 15:00 [2] 0.8 km (18:45 / km)

2 AM

orienteering 1:12:43 [3] 7.9 km (9:12 / km)

MLS at Sildbury hill again. A bit hesitant at a couple and snagged in some bramble. Lots of controls so quite pleased to avoid any major Horlicks. Also ok that race was a bit shorter as it is becoming a bit familiar

Tuesday Nov 19, 2019 #

off road 56:18 [3] 5.0 mi (11:16 / mi)

Potter around Purdown , very wet and greasy and no mudclaws so very slow in places. Stopped twice once to talk to Phil who is recovering and later to watch a badger also 'pottering around ' in the gloom. So as he disappeared into his set I mused that are homes are about 500m apart

Monday Nov 18, 2019 #

off road 1:05:30 [3] 6.5 mi (10:05 / mi)

Ran along the coast path from the Portishead Lido. sunny and not that cold, interesting and threatening churn in the channel (its always different) I guess caused by very high Volume Severn battling the incoming tide. Anyway cocked up the turn round point a bit so shorter than usual but not necessarily a bad thing as quite heavy legged today

Sunday Nov 17, 2019 #

1 AM

off road 12:00 [2] 0.8 km (15:00 / km)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 1:38:28 [5] 8.9 km (11:04 / km)

NGOC Regional Event at Parkend. Really nice to be back in the Forest of Dean. A couple of small errors including the penultimate control and a bad route choice on long leg going too straight in brambly forest. But it was wet, muddy and more vegetation than in the Spring so excuses for slow pace! and yo ho ho when I finished I was not dead last like last week …..some one was slower Hurrah!

Saturday Nov 16, 2019 #

1 AM

off road 54:00 [3] 5.0 mi (10:48 / mi)

Run on Purdown just to log some miles as bright sunny morning. Did not standard route with just one hill
2 AM

off road 10:00 [2] 0.5 km (20:00 / km)

Warm up
3 AM

orienteering race (Night) 1:02:00 [4] 4.5 km (13:47 / km)

Nice night and good venue (Minchinhampton) for Night 'O' , alas performed as though I had never been out at night before. Found a few and then got stuck in a spikey bush at the boggy bog, could not find the next one, the pesky pit by the big hill, nor the next as the control was actually inside the thicket....oh well 30 mns got. Picked up a couple more and then had to charge back so some running training. Despite all it was fun and enjoyed the evening run

Friday Nov 15, 2019 #

off road 1:20:00 [3] 7.0 mi (11:26 / mi)

Run with Mark and Alice up to Twmbalwm but not to top rather to forest road and then along to end of ridge and back over the top. Really enjoyed route and delighted to see Alice back in action, seemingly with no after effects -Hurray!

Thursday Nov 14, 2019 #

Note

In need of a rest day and particularly as it started with alight dusting of snow rained all day no temptation to do anything else

Wednesday Nov 13, 2019 #

1 AM

off road 15:00 [2] 1.0 km (15:00 / km)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 1:33:49 [4] 8.9 km (10:32 / km)

MLS Event at Bordon Heath.
I did lose time at no 10 where I made a stupid error by using the wrong path junction has the AP and then thrashing around with the other two runners who had done the same rather than re-locating. There were several other controls where I lost some time including the hill with the water tower that I never figure out but no disasters. That said disappointed with the time which was largely due to an absence of good splits. I seemed sluggish going to early controls although the terrain is easy and, although trying, was slow and weary towards end.

Really good event in a very varied and interesting area

Tuesday Nov 12, 2019 #

off road 1:12:00 [3] 6.5 mi (11:05 / mi)

BOK run from Wick - new route over to and round Overscourt wood -very soft and muddy but had not taken Mudclaws - silly Ups! Found it quire weraysome although pace was more moderate than sometimes.

Monday Nov 11, 2019 #

off road 1:16:26 [3] 7.0 mi (10:55 / mi)

Run from Portbury, sunny but a bit of nip in the wind. Summer veg not now an issue but many fields quite wet. Kept an honest pace all the way but tiring towards end and found gate climbing a challenge

Sunday Nov 10, 2019 #

off road 1:16:20 [3] 6.5 mi (11:45 / mi)

A bit broken mostly knees / not feeling on top form so just went for an easy potter around Purdown and Frome Valley

Saturday Nov 9, 2019 #

orienteering race 1:54:21 [4] 7.6 km (15:03 / km)

NGOC Event at Headless Hill. Wet and cold day but ok once in the forest.
Very disappointing day. W as very carefully going to 2 a platform on an essentially bland hillside except for occasional vegetation features which I have had difficulty picking up before. Found track junction, veg corner, end of pencil shaped veg as AP but no control, looked around, down to lower vb found other platform, still no flag, went higher - this is silly much to high but flag now visible from 100m -oh....continued course but at glacial pace and two more costly errors including finding 11 from 2. I did not enjoy the day and no redeeming features in performance. Dead last in the results
1 AM

road run 10:00 [3] 0.5 km (20:00 / km)

Warm up

Thursday Nov 7, 2019 #

off road 1:00:56 [3] 5.0 mi (12:11 / mi)

Nice sunny day but although quite a high temperature a bit of 'nip' in the wind.
Ran from Swineford intending to do an extended run but very heavy legged so reverted to standard. Particularly good viewing from the Round Hill. 38.01 to here and ran quite hard back

Wednesday Nov 6, 2019 #

1 AM

off road 15:00 [2] 1.0 km (15:00 / km)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 1:33:04 [5] 9.6 km (9:42 / km)

MLS Event at Perham Down. Not too shabby a start, not quite seeing the controls and a big hesitation at No 5 (1 min). Went into 19 a piece of forest that had been a disaster last time and despite care got onto wrong track and it was again a bit of a disaster. Probably lost 3 mins but also quite a lot of momentum. A bit of a disappointment with the time I thought I was going steady

Tuesday Nov 5, 2019 #

off road 1:18:50 [3] 7.0 mi (11:16 / mi)

A bit broken so decided that an interval session on the Downs was a 'bridge too far' but maybe next time. Ran from the Dog north on the CW and did struggle to get going took basically 41.00 to the turn but pushed on the return and felt much better afterwards

Monday Nov 4, 2019 #

Note
(rest day)

Quite achy and sore -does my calf hurt or just cramp? does my foot hurt or just normal? does my shoulder...
So decided on a day off from basically everything...

Sunday Nov 3, 2019 #

orienteering race 3:02:39 [4] 25.6 km (7:08 / km)

Ran Peak Raid from Alstonefield on the Staffs/ Derbys border. In the White Peak, not an area I have been to before -limestone, deep cut river valleys. limestone walls and lovely colour in the trees. Race used the OS 1;25000 and you had to use the footpaths which was ok as controls were on wall/ path junctions etc. I ran with Laura till near the end where she ran away to be back on time, which was delightful and sociable.
It turns out that 3 hours is a good time for a Score Event, its worth some time at the start sorting out route and even though eventually visiting 13 of 15 controls, changed the control missed on east side, switched from one to two on the west and risked the extra one at the finish so interest preserved.
First hour 9.8 km (included some well made paths), second hour 6.8km (much wetter/ boggy and more styles/ gates, Third hour 9.0 km (extraordinary)
Lengths actual route taken.
Really enjoyed the concept, the comradery of the competitors and officials (not to mention the coffee and flapjack in the village hall) and the sun shone.

Note

Travel to Sheffield to play with grandkids

Friday Nov 1, 2019 #

off road 52:45 [3] 6.5 km (8:07 / km)

Ran the Bradley Stoke NE Urban, pretty clean and on a surprisingly warm day. Had not really intended to but pushed quite hard and knackered at the end
