Sunday Jun 30, 2019 #

off road 57:54 [3] 5.0 mi (11:35 / mi)

A bit cooler, just went out to get legs moving late in the day. Short Purdown variant, very slow to start with but running better by end

Thursday Jun 27, 2019 #

Note

Goys are down for a few days so planning to enjoy being with the family rather than struggle to run in heat

Wednesday Jun 26, 2019 #

1 AM

off road 13:00 [3] 0.8 km (16:15 / km)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race (Urban) 48:14 [5] 6.5 km (7:25 / km)

BOK Urban race at Stockwood from Old Reds Rugby ground. Ran quite hard with only a couple of minor errors but still a long way down the list. The weather is quite hot/ humid and although not much some running through long grass eyes badly affected afterwards - chances of running in the countryside during the impending 'heat wave' low

Tuesday Jun 25, 2019 #

off road 1:07:12 [3] 6.0 mi (11:12 / mi)

Leigh Woods -short route (new norm?) as wet day, trying quite hard time not too bad?

Monday Jun 24, 2019 #

off road 58:00 [3] 5.0 mi (11:36 / mi)

Run with Mark and Alice up Twmbarlwm, very hot and humid, struggling badly. I had not slept well and felt a bit rough this am or perhaps just not able to run as strongly as I could in earlier times......

Sunday Jun 23, 2019 #

off road 1:12:03 [3] 6.5 mi (11:05 / mi)

Purdown, Frome Valley and then straight back. Running better today

Saturday Jun 22, 2019 #

Note

Pre- op walk with Ash on Purdown. Nice day, a shame Pete and Jo were unable to join

Friday Jun 21, 2019 #

off road 1:37:00 [3] 7.5 mi (12:56 / mi)

Ran from Burrington intending to do Tinsel Trot but knees not good and slow
across top in as wet so took disappointing 80 mins to Trig point, so decided on short option back rather than make it an epic. Nice sunny warm day though

Thursday Jun 20, 2019 #

orienteering 1:50:00 [3] 8.0 km (13:45 / km)

Training at Merhyr Mawr - lots of undergrowth as it now has its summer vegetation and slow. Navigation a bit better than of late so quite enjoyed it - still cocked up in the wood though!

Tuesday Jun 18, 2019 #

Controlling 1:00:00 [2] 5.0 km (12:00 / km)

Planning at Whiteford -out much of the day so time and distance indicative only

Monday Jun 17, 2019 #

off road 58:26 [3] 5.0 mi (11:41 / mi)

Standard route from Swineford, up to Race Course and back via the Round Hill. Pushed on the up but a bit lack luster on the down

Sunday Jun 16, 2019 #

1 AM

road run 15:00 [2] 1.0 km (15:00 / km)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 46:00 [5] 5.4 km (8:31 / km)

BOK Blast at Thornbury. Completely messed up no 1 -going in through wrong entrance and then could not make map fit. So 25th with atime loss of perhaps 70 secs. OK then uo to 16 got back to 9th in 36.17, then I lost location made a parallel (ish) error and had to relocate from finish losing about 2.5 mins, so fell to 14th by finish. Quite enjoyed this weekend but my urban orienteering is really not very good!

Saturday Jun 15, 2019 #

1 AM

road run 15:00 [2] 1.0 km (15:00 / km)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race (Urban) 20:14 [5] 3.1 km (6:32 / km)

BOK Blast Prologue at UWE. Basically around my estate and then a few short legs to get into new part of UWE ran OK till penultimate control 14 in 7th with 17.23 so did not have pave with leaders then I was suddenly lost and then failed to see flag although I was there -lost 80 secs which is a disaster in a Sprint, so ended 11th a lot down. Ah well!
3 AM

road run 18:00 [4] 3.0 km (6:00 / km)

Just ready to go to the start, when I discovered that SI card, compass etc were at home not assembly...…..and I thought I had made all possible mistakes! I hHad to run quite hard to and from and only just made the start
4 AM

orienteering race (Urban) 18:31 [5] 3.0 km (6:10 / km)

BOK Blast at UWE part 2 - ended up 11th as am but no major mistakes. Just not quick enough

Thursday Jun 13, 2019 #

off road 1:12:00 [3] 6.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

Blaise castle -another wet day. Could not park in the usual place at combe Dingle so ended up not doing a route rather a combination of loops. Legs not in good shape today, (road running does not suit) so in truth a bit of a plod but Blaise always good training.

Wednesday Jun 12, 2019 #

1 AM

road run 12:00 [2] 0.8 km (15:00 / km)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race (Urban) 51:04 [5] 6.4 km (7:59 / km)

NGOC at Dursley - not quite as complex as I had anticipated - kept it pretty simple and steady. Did not see an alley on route to 3 but took alternative quite quickly so not really a time loss. Some hesitation going to 14 coming back into the school - it would have helped to have had some pre- knowledge here and eliminated potential shorter options quicker, so instead of fussing about missing a short way to have done the long route quicker.

Still a much straighter Splitbrowser than norm -so pretty happy with that

Tuesday Jun 11, 2019 #

off road 1:15:00 [3] 7.0 mi (10:43 / mi)

BOK run from Wotton in the wet - CW out of town, so some old ground and some new. Will do this one again in the sun shine!

Monday Jun 10, 2019 #

off road 1:02:05 [3] 6.0 mi (10:21 / mi)

Ashton Court, ran early to avoid rain. Knees poor to start but running improved towards the end.

Sunday Jun 9, 2019 #

Note

Went to Cardiff which was dry from Bristol which was dry, to assist Charlie with some chores. When approaching Newport it appeared that the God of the Old Testament had ripped up his covenant in Trumpesque style and was intent on destroying that place by flood, and the car had to start swimming on the M4 - I wonder what the citizens had done to merit such wrath.

Quite stiff afterwards

Saturday Jun 8, 2019 #

orienteering race 1:08:10 [4] 6.5 km (10:29 / km)

Storey Arms local race - really like the excuse to do some fell navigation. Completely 'cocked up' the long leg to 4 including going too far down the hill in the wrong place - I did not need extra climb as I was destined to be about last anyway. However there was a near duplicate long leg to 10, which I ran completely in control and spiked so morale was restored.
Good day out

Friday Jun 7, 2019 #

off road 53:27 [3] 5.0 mi (10:41 / mi)

Shorter variant of Purdown, no quite so good today and did struggle with breathing, particularly at the start and after the monument. In part it may have been because its a funny old day - it rained steadily and then there was a break so I went out - it seemed to be very hot and humid …….but this was not supported by the temperature measurement......odd

Thursday Jun 6, 2019 #

off road 1:02:13 [3] 6.0 mi (10:22 / mi)

Ran from Blaise Castle car park in the late afternoon -shorter loop. Although this time was not 60 mins it was better than recent - a consequence of running not being quite such a struggle as most runs seem to be? Enjoyed running more than in recent months

Wednesday Jun 5, 2019 #

1 AM

road run 15:00 [2] 1.0 km (15:00 / km)

Good warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 1:07:34 [4] 6.8 km (9:56 / km)

Mike had pointed out that although not an MLS there was a BAOC event at Hawley - he did not come but it was a sunny day and went anyway to do a Blue course - ran well to 5 but missed attackpoint and could not see control - went right out and returned -there was the flag although the re-entrant was near invisible as the vegetation is now high. As I meant to be in training rather than racing mode after 7 decided to run straight rather than use the more major paths which would tend to be quicker routes at this time of year. This proved to be quite difficult and further mistakes leading to relocation occurred. Relocation is taking me too long!
3 AM

road run 8:00 [2] 0.5 km (16:00 / km)

Jogging as warm up
4 AM

orienteering race (Urban) 53:20 [5] 6.8 km (7:51 / km)

I went over to Bradley Stoke as I had understood that there might be a shortage of helpers. The original intent of the Urbans was that the courses would give 'proper'/ 'quality' competition but the volunteer commitment would be minimalist. (Registration/ SI is busy early on and you really need more than 1 as you do at peak start times - but 3/4 (inc organiser) is adequate??? In actual fact there were more than ample volunteers and nothing for me to do, So I ran the course, its great to have different planners otherwise it would be dull fare. The brest attribute is that it had plenty of route choices. Very straight Splitbrowser which is pleasing but I suspect pre-knowledge of area helpful

I met Steve Hayter - an ex colleague and a really nice bloke - a sometime cyclist, swimmer, runner, tri-athlete and now from his 48 mins Brown orienteer. His lads are now old enough to participate and he has also taken on a couple of our Urban's after work. Every time a meet a colleague It really highlights how much I miss working - I wonder if this will change?

Tuesday Jun 4, 2019 #

Note

I had intended to go the BOK run but felt quite rubbish and short of energy late in the day, so ended up giving it a miss

Monday Jun 3, 2019 #

Note

Rest day

Sunday Jun 2, 2019 #

1 AM

road run 20:00 [2] 1.5 km (13:20 / km)

Warm up and jog back
2 AM

orienteering race 1:51:02 [5] 9.5 km (11:41 / km)

Welsh League at Kenfig.
Part of the dunes suffer from quite heavy undergrowth. I survived this to get to and from the nice dunes to run the long legs. These dunes are splendid to run on and the long legs were a joy. Ran quite well to the attackpoint for 12, a square ended dune. Here I somehow managed to turn by 90 degrees going west rather than north and going too far desperately looking around knolls, before eventually re-locating. Saw Keith approaching and ran the next (short leg hard) but as a headless chicken and inaccurate - ended up taking 12 mins rather than 3mins. Very disappointed at the time and still not just at these unnecessary mistakes but at the amount of time loss -nearly 20 mins over two legs Grrr..

Saturday Jun 1, 2019 #

Note

Went to Whiteford to look at changeover for September race
1 AM

off road 15:00 [2] 1.0 km (15:00 / km)

Warm up including beach
2 AM

orienteering race 49:06 [5] 5.0 km (9:49 / km)

SBOC at Oxwich- nice sunny day and a really cleverly planned course on a postage stamp area (pi loop) which made you feel you were not covering the same ground. I will definitely try this at some occasion.
Ran quite well - just catching Alice (2 mins?) at one point but she recovered the time to be 2 secs in front at the Finish. It was interesting comparing the splits that I took a straight line to 13, (with green and fence crossing) where as she took a round path route and was 1 min quicker. Later I went to the wrong tree and had to divert also losing time but in general our pace was similar, which is encouraging
